It’s time for the crackhead to let loose

Sam Ch.

I feel that the reason the WG wasnt doing much to retrieve the fruist is the same as why dragon isnt making much right now They're playing chess with the world, its a patience game and they know that fruit is elusive "has a soul of its own" as they said so they probably just settled with making sure it doesnt awaken instead of making weird move that'll make the general pop wonder wtf is going on

1 more episode for one of the greatest action sequences in op to date

Gear 5 is the most Luffy that Luffy has ever Luffied. That's like Luffiest we've ever seen Luffy in an entire show.

Honestly, the reason the World Government didn’t kill Luffy earlier likely comes down to a mix of ignorance, underestimation, and just bad luck on their part. The timeline hasn’t been fully revealed yet, but here’s how I see it: Back when they first heard of him, around Alabasta, Luffy was just a rookie with a supposedly “Paramecia” rubber fruit, so he didn’t seem like a real threat. The elders probably thought the Marines would handle him if needed. Plus, if they couldn’t find the fruit for 800 years, they may have assumed Joy Boy would never return, or that the fruit had disappeared forever. Maybe it was even hidden at Raftel and only respawned in Luffy’s time due to some unknown reason or Joy Boy’s foresight. As for Luffy himself, he stayed off their radar for a long time. After Alabasta, he went to Skypiea, an unregistered sky island nobody knew about. Then Water 7 and Enies Lobby happened, but CP9’s main focus was Robin, not Luffy. After that came Thriller Bark and then Sabaody, where Kuma let the crew escape, likely on Dragon’s orders. Then Luffy got caught up in Impel Down and Marineford, chaotic situations where no one could have predicted his actions. Post-time skip, he popped back up at Sabaody, then Fishman Island, where G5 waited, but a whirlpool diverted him. That’s what they mean when they say the fruit keeps evading them. He shows up on Punk Hazard, which was unknown territory, then Dressrosa, which CP0 didn’t even realize he was in until after he left. Then Zou, and then Whole Cake Island. No one expected him to walk into Big Mom’s territory and come out alive. The World Government wouldn’t dare risk invading her island. Finally, in Wano, CP0 had agents, but they only confirmed the Straw Hats were on Onigashima once the raid started. Even then, after Luffy’s first loss to Kaido, they thought it was over. Only when he returned and awakened his fruit did the World Government actually panic and try to eliminate him.

So the short version? The World Government never saw Luffy as a true threat until it was too late. He kept slipping through the cracks, showing up in unexpected places, and they constantly relied on others like the Marines, Yonko, and CP0 to deal with him. They underestimated him, didn’t track him well, and by the time they realized what he really was, he was already too far along in his journey.

Also, I’m not even sure if the World Government or Navy keeps a detailed record of every pirate’s Devil Fruit powers in some kind of official book. But either way, with all the chaos over the years, the Five Elders wouldn’t have had a solid way of tracking the Nika Fruit after it was eaten, especially since no one in the government even knew the fruit had changed hands. Luffy was only known publicly as the rubber kid with a basic Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. That was the information being shared among the Marines, the Navy, and the general world. Nobody, not even the admirals, knew that the Gomu Gomu no Mi was actually a Mythical Zoan. The Elders themselves hid that truth, so no one was even searching for it under its real identity. On top of that, rubber-like powers aren’t unique in the One Piece world, so there was no clear reason to suspect anything unusual. Luffy was also always moving from island to island, making it difficult for the government to monitor him. Ever since Alabasta, they tried to catch him, but never managed to. In a way, it feels like the fruit’s will, along with Luffy’s own will, was always avoiding capture, almost as if it was meant to stay hidden until the time for its awakening finally arrived.

Speaking off Zou, Franky's shirt in Zou teased gear 5 because the shirt spelled hito (human which is the name of the fruit) with the "o" being a sun which implies sun god nika

Takeo Ryuu

Yeah, a lot of people other than Jack were also confused about this plot point and some even called it a plot hole, but I do think (partially due to the sheer length of the series and Oda's insistence on detail, which is a great thing but has some negative effects) that people tend to forget just how FAST the entire story of One Piece has taken place. Like, though we aren't given a specific time frame for most of the journey, it is heavily implied and in some cases stated that nearly all of pre-timeskip happened in the course of a few weeks or few months. Regardless, no matter how powerful of an organization you are, trying to locate one specific pirate ship on an entire sea with very little navigation data outside of poses while also dealing with much more present and huge threats like Whitebeard, Dragon and the revolutionaries, and Blackbeard, is a much harder task than people seem to believe it should be. The Straw Hats don't linger on islands, it's what makes the story interesting and also explains why they aren't ever really caught up to by the navy. Same with post-timeskip, the Straw Hats move from island to island at breakneck speeds, much faster than the time it would take for an entire military force to arrive to stop them. Keep in mind, at the level of post-timeskip strength, the World Government would have to send no less than two admirals and a fleet of vice-admirals to actually GUARANTEE that the Straw Hats would be annihilated. At that point it was quite clear that one admiral could be escaped from at the very least, if not fought off directly. Mobilizing that much power on the off-chance that they catch a band of pirates before they leave is an INSANELY stupid move for the World Government given that the threat of the Revolutionary Army hovers over them constantly. Just look at how stressed out and kind of useless Akainu has been on the hot seat post-timeskip. He's finally understanding just how stretched thin the forces of the World Government are (given that the God's Knights pretty clearly stay in home turf 99% of the time to protect the Celestial Dragons and can't be considered an offensive/mobile force) when it comes to the upper-tier strength. Given that Akainu himself cannot act anymore since he has to control the entire force, his only top-tier strength characters are Fujitora (who clearly acts on his own morals and barely listens to Akainu), Kizaru, and Ryokugyu. Of course, recently the Seraphims have been added to that force, but that's a new development that wasn't fully complete and ready to be shown to the world until the Warlord system was disbanded. So, how could the Elders have effectively caught Luffy at any point? The Straw Hats move insanely fast, are often thrown off trail by natural weather and just being sidetracked through side quests, and tend to harbor on islands that the World Government either has no power on, or only has enough presence to get the news out of Luffy's arrival by the time they are already preparing to leave. Add to that fact that Luffy by that point is insanely strong and would take ALL the remaining power that the Government has left to defeat and prevent escaping, and it's easy to see why they didn't even try. Send Fujitora and Ryokugyu off to find Luffy, and what is to stop Dragon and Sabo, Blackbeard and Weevil, Kaido and Big Mom from just straight up destroying any Navy base, headquarters, Impel Down, or even attack the Celestial Dragons on Mariejois? So pretty much the only real argument to be had about the Elders not moving on Luffy is pre-timeskip, and again, if you actually track the Straw Hat's journey through pre-timeskip and the Government's knowledge, it's pretty easy to explain away. The Government didn't even know for sure that Luffy had the Gomu-Gomu fruit until Enies Lobby, where he fought many high-up government operatives directly and really made it obvious what his devil fruit was. Before this point they would at most have had suspicions from reports from Smoker and a few other low-level marines, but you have to imagine they receive false reports about the Gum-Gum fruit all the time, AND again if they wanted to GUARANTEE a capture they would have to at least send an Admiral even at that point, which would have basically sent a message to the entire world that there was something special about the Gum-Gum fruit. In addition, it's hard to believe that the Elders at this point were ignorant of Garp and Dragon's relationship with Luffy, and both of the two are informed and high-up enough to hear if Luffy was being hunted down by the Elders, and would obviously interfere. Hell, Dragon interfered when just Smoker fought Luffy. The Elders wouldn't want to ruin their relationship with Garp (supposedly one of the strongest men in the world) and possibly risk Dragon's all-out wrath just over some suspicion. And so their only real time to capture Luffy was between the end of Enies Lobby and time-skip. Directly following Enies Lobby, Garp was quite literally ON Water 7 with Luffy and the Elders would have known this. There's zero chance they could have done anything to Luffy at that point. Following that, Luffy disappeared in the Florian Triangle for Thriller Bark and was only found by chance by Kuma, who at that point obviously didn't make any report to the Government about Luffy until he was already gone. Then at Sabaody, the government only learned about Luffy's presence at the same time as learning about him punching a celestial dragon, and they basically did send their entire full force at him. Akainu stayed back to protect home base like he always does, Kuzan was likely too far away to respond immediately, and Kizaru was sent along with several Pacifista, basically all the strength the Government could spare given that a war with Whitebeard could have broken out at any point, and MORE than enough strength to capture Luffy. Yet as we know, before this could happen, Rayleigh protected the Straw Hats, and then Kuma rescued them. Following this the government didn't know about any of the Straw Hat's whereabouts until Post-Timeskip, save for Luffy. They only learn about Luffy's whereabouts during Impel Down, where they obviously try their best to stop him but all their troops are focused on the REAL threat, the war against Whitebeard. Luffy shows up at Marineford and again, given all the attention focused on Whitebeard and crew, they still manage to throw as much as they can at Luffy, but Whitebeard even seems to catch on to this and orders his crew to protect Luffy. After Ace and Whitebeard die, Luffy DOES become the focus of every admiral, and they do really try to kill him, but Whitebeard's crew, Crocodile, Buggy, Jimbei, and Law save him. Keep in mind that even after Shanks shows up, Kizaru AND Kuzan both try to stop Luffy from getting away. (This might just be in the anime, it felt kind of weird to me that after the scene where Ben Beckman threats Kizaru with a gun, Kizaru just shrugs and then tries to kill Luffy with a million rays anyway) So yeah, when you put the entire story and context and timeline into perspective, it was really impossible for the Elders to have ever caught or stopped Luffy. Like they mentioned, the Nika fruit has a will of its own and there was no real chance for them to have ever caught it. (MANGA SPOILERS, EVEN FOR PEOPLE CAUGHT UP TO THE ANIME) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Even in current story, we can see just how stretched thin the World Government really is. One of the best parts about Elbaf has been seeing how underhanded and careful the God's Knights on Elbaf have had to be because of the fact that they could only spare a few of them with the Revolutionary attack on Mariejois, and the fact that Luffy and crew are simply too powerful to be approached with just a few powerful people. Post-timeskip has been amazing for showing us more of the marine's upper brass struggles instead of shrouding them in shadow like a future threat. After marineford, the marines become less of a threat and instead Imu, the Elders, and the God's Knights become the hidden threat. The marines are instead shown being beat, battered, and threatened at every opening. Koby is captured, which leads to Garp's capture. The Warlords fight back against the Seraphim and for the most part appear to win. The Cross Guild forms as a new major threat and also begins a whole new problem of issuing bounties for marines, causing even the citizens of the world to turn against the marines. Doflamingo's defeat has caused an insane amount of chaos given that the balance created through his weapons manufacturing was shattered, and now wars are occurring everywhere. Aokiji freaking joined Blackbeard of all people, and in the space of another few weeks Luffy went from just another member of the Worst Generation to an Emperor of the sea. From the very beginning of the One Piece story, we've seen Oda lay out the pieces for what must be a massive world war at the end of the series. These pieces have begun to move faster and faster, and people expect the government and elders to throw all their forces at ONE amateur rookie pirate because of a fruit that hasn't been activated in 800 years and also hasn't been caught in 800 years? Every time we see the Elders there's some sort of problem, some sort of headache. If they had the energy and time to hunt down Luffy, they'd be kicking it back and relaxing in their little tower up there. We don't even know just how much Imu and Imu squad is dealing with. We don't know enough about Dragon and how dangerous he is (besides the fact that he's called the most dangerous man in the world). We don't know how aggressive the Emperor's have been with the Government (besides the fact that they had to form the 7 warlords in response to them). We don't know how much work goes behind hiding 800 years of history from the entire world, suppressing an entire era of pirating, and keeping the Celestial Dragons happy. It's safe to say, IF the Elders could have spared the resources to hunt down Luffy, they WOULD have.

Takeo Ryuu

Oh yeah, Jack, the reason for the whole "Who are you?" and Zunesha clarification that Luffy is LIKE Joyboy, not Joyboy himself (at least not the one that obviously had a relationship with Zunesha) is that Oda correctly foresaw that people would be confused as to whether Gear 5 was a actual possession or not. Given the unusual nature of Gear 5, the insane uncontrollable laughter, and the reveal that it is in fact the Nika fruit, many people immediately thought that Gear 5 was Luffy getting possessed by an ancient god, or at least influenced by its personality. Given that Oda released the chapter with Luffy reaffirming that it's just Luffy being Luffy directly after Gear 5 was first revealed, it's safe to assume that Oda knew that people would debate about this and settled it immediately. Gear 5 probably has some minor effect of filling its user with joy given that Luffy himself seems confused about why he feels so free and happy, but it's definitely still Luffy in control and he isn't controlled by those emotions, just influenced by them. Since you're caught up to current episode by now, you will have already seen many instances of Luffy being more serious in Gear 5, so it's also safe to assume that Luffy gains more control of his Nika form the more he practices with it and the emotions that come with it are not too difficult to control after a while.

Can't wait to see the bounty changes after these fights.

Artemis

This might be my own head canon, someone can clarify this for me if im wrong, but I do believe the last line "Who am I?" is a reference to Go nagai's Cutey Honey manga from the 1970's.

SimStu

I only realized recently that Shanks wanted to give the fruit to Ace, because he's Roger's son. Until he met Luffy. Partly because he ate the fruit without asking, but mostly because he saw Roger in him

Bryan Price

I love how in this fight Kaido is telling Luffy to take it seriously after he was fighting drunk and Luffy told him the same, also Luffy asking Kaido if he's having fun, he's completely reversed the roles in the fight.

Dark Kronis

luffy many many episodes ago; "take this seriously" kaido "lol no" kaido this episode "take this seriously " luffy: "lol no"

aGhost

So much happens at once, after 1072 I thought the reaction was over and almost closed out hahaha. Got a whole other episode to go!

Brendo 016

BEAT LOUDLY, HEARTBEAT! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

SimStu

5th Gear is so so good in the dub. After Luffy got blasted off of Onigashima in 1072, he said "Despicable!" like Daffy Duck

Tony

Nah Charlotte WinWin takes G5 Luffy high diff (Oda told me)(the BM agenda will never die)

Dasha

It was so funny cause it was written as "I ☀️ HT" and people created a ton of theories that were not even close to hito hito no mi or sun god. Someone thought it says "I love hentai" lmao

Dasha

I want 1100 so bad, that's my fav gear 5 fight so far

Banjo Silk

I'm sure you know by now but basically, whatever he imagines he can do

brolster

imagine Kaidos POV: he just got done fighting 18 dudes on his roof at 3 am and the strongest dude who he's knocked down 4 times gets back up and toys with him all while laughing his ass off... I wouldnt even know what to think if I was kaido

Zura Janai, Katsura Da

You should probably go back and watch Skypeia, especially the episodes where they talk about shandorian culture you’re gonna realize something was in your face this whole time

JStymie

I've been using Jack's watch through as an excuse to go back and rewatch One Piece via the dub, since the dub crew really started cranking out the episodes and the catch up rate during the covid years. It's become my preferred way to watch, honestly -- a lot of the little deliveries are great. I also liked a lot of Big Mom's line deliveries in the last 10-ish episodes lol -- "You gotta be shittin' me!"

SimStu

Probably my favorite Big Mom moment, after Ulti scratched Tama, she just said "Hey, bitch!"

Tony Lozada

Wait so I paid and you don’t even have the video? I’m just watching you with no reference? Want my $ back. That’s bull
