AUTO Recognition Target (Patreon)
Content
AUTO Recognition Target is an AI Subject Recognition option that first appeared on the A9 III and A1 II cameras. The feature has now also appeared on the A7CII and A7CR cameras after the Version 2.00 Firmware update.
I have adjusted my Memory Recall settings, that are part of my PAL workflow (outlined in the eBooks) and for the Camera Setup files (CAMSET files) that I provide for Premium and Premium Plus members. The Recognition Target now defaults to AUTO rather than Human.
In some instances it is important to switch from AUTO to a specific Recognition Target (e.g., Animal, Bird etc) or temporarily switch Subject Recognition to OFF.
In the examples above I show how the Focus Frame that is on the dog suddenly switches to the human when using Auto Subject Recognition, as humans take priority over animals in AUTO. In the second image I show how the camera thinks a crash helmet sitting on a motorcycle is a human head, so the focus switches from the center of the frame to the helmet at the top of the frame (not useful when using a wide F1.4 aperture).
When you notice the camera making focus acquisition errors (too sensitive to finding a target that is not your intended target) then you need to establish a workflow where you can quickly disable the Subject Recognition, either using the Fn menu or by assigning a Custom Key to toggle the Subject recognition OFF and ON again.
With Subject Recognition turned OFF, the camera will still be able to acquire focus and track the focus of a moving subject, but the camera will now only use contrast, tone, color, texture and distance as part of its focus algorithms.
It is possible that the A7RV and A6700 cameras may also acquire this AUTO focus feature with future firmware updates, so be on the lookout for these changes and be prepared to modify your shooting workflows when, and if, necessary.
I can provide more detailed support and guidance for fine-tuning your shooting workflows on my Q&A forum for Premium Plus members.
