The wait is finally over. The much anticipated A7SIII has finally been announced … and it’s feature list will impress most videographers who want the best quality 4K files from a full-frame camera.

Take a closer look at the feature list of this camera on my blog post: https://www.markgaler.com/sony-a7siii

...and Sony Australia's microsite: https://www.sony.com.au/alphavideo

Mark, Besides outstanding video what are your thoughts on it for astrophotography? With its low light ability I am curious. I know with the 12mp range it can still make an impressive print.

Aleksander Austad

Do you think this new menu will come to the a7R IV too?

Mark Galer

The original A7S was the best low light photography for stills when it was released but the arrival on the backlit sensor on the A7RII narrowed the gap significantly, so much so that it was not worth purchasing the A7S for stills because of the lack of Phase Detect Autofocus. The Noise reduction algorithms on video still made the A7S and A7SII the best low light cameras for video. I will have to reserve final judgement on the A7SIII low light performance until I have tested it. The 12 MP sensor is still good to make a 4K image for screen or reasonable sized print but doesn't give the photographer a lot of ability to crop aggressively in post. There was no A7SIII in Australia apart from the one being used to make the promo cinema reel in Victoria, so I have not had chance to test it and won't be able to review until I return to Australia in late September.

I won't be holding my breath ;-) The firmware engineers are a bit slow at rolling back changes on new cameras to older cameras and sometimes changes are never rolled back. 2019 saw some significant firmware upgrades to the A9, A7III and A7RIII but this was a first for Sony. I rarely use the menus these days once the camera is set up and would not use a touch screen for selecting menu items if you gave me one. It will be quicker for me to use the Finder, Multiselector and front and rear dials to access menu items. The new menus on the A7SIII may be optimised for a touch and swipe actions as all the menu items for a tab don't fit on the screen (unlike the current menu structure).

I don’t use the menu system very much, but nice to have anyway... 😊

Will you do a calmest for the siii? I'd like to have it the same as my iv.

Mark Galer

This is not high on my Priority list as the A7SIII is primarily a video camera and I shoot mostly stills. My video needs are met by the other Alpha camera and I don't need to low light video capability of an A7SIII. I can advise on settings as the most of the video options are also found on the A1.

Mark, I have the Sony a7Slll even though I generally shoot stills with the A1 I would love to see sometime in the future your settings and recommendation for the a7Slll. Thank you!

Mark Galer

They would be identical to the A1. If I captured movies in log (which I don't) I would probably follow the advice of Philip Bloom and Gerald Undone. When I review a camera and prepare an eBook and CAMSET I spend approximately 4 months shooting exclusively with the camera. Unfortunately the A7SIII doesn't have the megapixel count I need for shooting stills so this project will get put on the back-burner for some considerable time.
