What a great overview Mark! I echo Dan’s comment about the Sony System and Pricing. It’s very easy to get sticker shock when looking at the price but a little rational big picture thinking and some comparison with higher priced equipment eases that shock a bit. Does the A1 have the same IBIS version as the A9 series?

Sachin Shinde

Hi Mr. Mark, Now, no more questions about; which one to buy A7R4 or A9II..... . Now the boss is here, Sony A1. :-)

Flemming Morgan

Thanks for a great overview! Exciting times in the Sony world. I also endorse the comments on Sony system and pricing. You mentioned that the A7R4 didn’t work well with the 200-600 zoom lens. Do you think this will be solved with the A1?

Mark Galer

I will continue to dig deeper through the spec sheets but haven't heard anything about any changes to IBIS. I would imagine they lifted the modified/updated IBIS from the A7RIV.

Mark Galer

That's a relief :-) I daresay the questions will come, however, from those that can't afford the A1 and we see the A7RM4 and A9M2 discounted further in 2021. I suspect they will continue to be lowered in price until you could effectively purchase both the A9II and A7RIV for the price of an A1. The A1 will probably still offer the advantage of tracking at high ISO values with the option to crop aggressively later in post. My primary tests next week will be to test the promise of this performance.

The FE 200-600 G OSS works beautifully with the A9 and A9II cameras and my tests next week will use the 200-600 on the A1 - fingers crossed. Unfortunately Sony chose to showcase images captured with the FE 600mm F/4 GM and A1 combination instead of the FE 200-600 G ( I would love to have been able to speak to the guys in Sony marketing about this decision). The A7RIV performs well with these bright aperture primes. The 135 f/1.8 GM is a stellar performer on the A7RIV for shooting fast action - you just have to be able to get close enough.

Thanks for the video Mark, great stuff. I have the a9 and a7RIV. Wonder which & when we might see some of the software improvements flow dow to these series of cameras. Do you think it's possble eye AF for birds could move down without the a1 hardware?

Cheryl

I did it. The minute I heard you describe Sony a1 I was on the phone. I am praying I will be able to go back to Africa this year and I will be selling my a9, a9II and a7rIV for the putting that toward 7c and a1. I am close to 75 years old now and actually had the fear that I won’t be around for all the wonderful new tech that’s coming down the line. I have to keep doing my outside walks to keep in shape so that once we have Covid under control I can still go out for the birds and animals. Thank you for what you do.

Mark Galer

This is a difficult one to predict as Sony never release performance specs for their processors and whether certain features require these faster processors. AF Tracking got rolled back to the A9 but not the A7III or A7RIII cameras. Sony made no statement as to why this didn't happen so I can only presume the older BionzX processors were unable to handle the additional AF algorithms in 'real time'. The A9 cameras can currently combine Animal Eye AF with AF tracking, but not the A7RIV, so I would imagine it is unlikely we will ever see bird Eye AF appear on the A7RIV.

Mark Galer

Congratulations :-) If COVID hasn't cleared in Africa by the end of the year (because of slow rollout of the vaccine and ongoing border restrictions) you may want to consider Australia. We have zero community COVID transmission and we have some great wildlife. Only a very small percentage of it wants to kill you ;-) Keep Safe. M

OK, that's it!! I will begin playing the lottery immediately, if not sooner!!

Steve Long

Thanks so much for your input on this amazing new camera. I am seriously considering this camera but will await your hands-on review, hopefully in the near future. One of my main concerns, will it handle high ISO similar (or better) than the A9? I returned the A7RIV because of the poor high ISO performance. Don't want to do that again to B&H. I shoot more sports and wildlife than landscape. The A9 has spoiled me.

Mark Galer

You won't have long to wait as the camera arrives on Monday and the embargo to post images captured with the camera is lifted on Friday. The sample images of the bear and the eagle looked OK at high ISO, but using the FE 600 F/4 was not a fair assessment of the tracking performance for people who own 'regular' lenses.

Anne Marie Leone

Can’t wait for you to put it through its paces.... I took the plunge and pre ordered it. Now do I take my A7III and eventually have it modified for IR photography as I see the A1 being the one to rule my photography, lol!

Hello Mark -thanks for initial alpha ! insight and the shared images. My passion is capturing eagles in the wild. Have 9ii and a7IV,200-600G, 100-400G plus 1.4 and 2x extenders. Will the A one help me get better pictures of flying eagles? The bird eye focus sounds very interesting, but you said it did not function well with the 200-600G. Will Sony improve birds eye focus with firmware upgrades or is that feature equipment dependent and will only work as it does now- poorly. Also even if birds eye focus is marginal how does the overall flying bird phot compare in A1 vs a9ii? Thanks!

Mark Galer

https://www.flickr.com/gp/markgaler/49F399 These are from my only shoot with birds (I only had 60 hours with the camera in my initial review). My first impression in difficult (very high contrast) lighting by conditions was that tracking with the swooping eagles was good but it struggled with the smaller flapping birds when using the 200-600. Without further testing (which may not happen in this review period) it will be too difficult to determine if it is better or worse than the A9ll. My feelings so far is that it’s tracking and high ISO performance is better than an A7RlV. I will not sell my A9ll until I have had further opportunities to shoot birds over a greater period of time. If Sony was able to provide me with a camera before the announcement I would be in a stronger position to advise but US marketing is the priority and not there Ambassador from down under.

Richard Allen

Thank you for your honest and understandable response. Will hold off trading my a9ii for the a1 until I hear more from you on this performance question. Richard
