Mr Mark, thank you for reply, which video though?

Using only an iPad with Lightroom CC in the field. I would like your advice on using only LR on the iPad for mobile storage and editing in the field. 1. If I was to download a field day’s images to LR-iPad, not delete the images from the CD card and then use the same CD card to download the next day’s images – how do I avoid downloading duplicates (i.e. the previous days images; without de-clicking each image)? (LR-CC desktop version allows this, but apparently not the mobile version) 2. Is there a method to store a second copy of the CD card images to an SSD (again, only using LR-iPad)?

Hi Ramin, it could be the 2.0 TC causing the softness. I photograph the moon and have good success with this setup. Tripod, 100-400gm with 1.4TC, remote shutter release, Stabilization turned off, manual focus with focus peaking, f8-f11, 1/125th, iso 100. And if I want a closer shot I use APS-C mode. I always shoot uncompressed raw format.

Mark - On my A1 I changed the AF On button to Tracking On- AF On. To confirm, is this a press and hold or a toggle feature. I was trying it with Terns diving for fish but I think I need slower birds to practice on.

For a hobbyist: What is regarded as best practice to move photos and videos from the camera to the computer or external hard drive? I got my A7C 2 weeks ago. When I connect it to my computer via USB-C I see folders sorted by the date of the shoot, when I plug the memory card directly into my computer I just see a large list of files. Sony suggests the use of PlayMemories Home software, but I don't see a point in using this additional software. After copying the media to my hard drive I will start culling them with Adobe Bridge and only a selection will make it into my Lightroom catalog. Many professionals use Photo Mechanic for this task, which I cannot justify for my private use.

The later model cameras, such as the A7C, have a very fast USB-C port. Transfer of files to the camera is faster if the memory card is left in the camera and the files transferred directly (bypassing the need for a card reader). Alternatively Sony make an SDXC card reader that will ensure speed is not compromised when transferring files. Image files are typically stored in a single folder in the folder hierarchy on your memory card, but the Alpha cameras also allow you to create multiple folders so that you can organise where the image files are saved to. I do not use PlayMemories personally but some users may find it useful for organising their files instead of a program such as Lightroom or Bridge. The vast majority of of users will be using Lightroom instead of Bridge but users who are subscribers to the Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) can choose their preference. Raw shooters usually need to keep their software up to date or use Adobe’s Raw converter to render their files backwards compatible. Lightroom can manage files even when they are not online (on a drive not currently connected to the computer) while Bridge can only manage files if the drive is connected to the computer. If files are edited in Bridge the Adobe Camera Raw engine is employed, which is the same engine used in the Develop module of Lightroom. Photo mechanic is often popular with photographers who need to cull from tens of thousands of images but does not offer much of an advantage for photographers sorting through hundreds of photos.

Hi Mark, a very quick question, in my collection of Sony Alpha's I have an A9 (MK1) which has done me well, but I very rarely use the 20FPS I am was more interested in the autofocus capabilities when it was released. Now with the A7 IV Release, would you consider it a good option to trade the A9 I for the new A7 IV that has essentially the same focusing system as the A9II and an upgraded Sensor if I do not need the speed of the A9's? Thanks in advance, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks Martin

The A7IV has not yet been announced by Sony (although some April1st pranks may have suggested otherwise). The A7C uses the newer Real-Time AF Tracking that has appeared on all new Alpha cameras since 2019. The only camera that was older than 2019 to receive the newer tracking capabilities via a firmware upgrade was the A9 (probably due to the fact that it was the only older camera that had a processor capable of dealing with the newer tracking algorithms in real time). The A9 actually has better tracking capabilities compared to newer cameras such as the A7RIV and A7C because of its use of a stacked sensor. The lack of blackout when using an electronic shutter helps to maintain focus accuracy during bursts of images when tracking a rapidly moving subject. If you priorities focusing moving subjects using an A9, A9II or A1 is the only way to go.

Thanks Mark, looks like I fell for the April fools joke 🤦. But in any case great advice and clear explanation of the differences. I will hang on to the A9 for a bit longer and perhaps get an A1 when it is freely available, later in the year. I have a couple of friends in a queue to buy one currently. Thanks again for the very helpful info.

I am most interested in what Sony will offer with the A7IV when it is finally released. It will be interesting to see if they choose to offer a conservative amount of upgraded features or throw everything at this model and create a lower resolution but significantly cheaper version of the A1.

Hi Mark I hope you are keeping well. You will be aware that version 1.4 firmware has just been announced for the A1. I’m currently on version 1.2 and had not gotten around to upgrading to 1.3. Can I go straight from 1.2 to 1.4? Thanks ever so much. Best regards Paul

Hi Mark, I lost my settings (actually your settings A7RM4 'old' version) With my previous set up (I think) I was able to recall some settings like shooting with tripod in M1 and Street Photography Manual in M2 Video in M3 and Action to freeze in M4. While I was able to upload the setting 1 2 and 3. I am still struggling to find the video or the setting where I can set up M1 M2 M3 and M4. I hope that you can assist me somehow to understand what I am doing wrong and why I cannot have the settings I was looking for...maybe. Thank you in advance for your help. I am lost... Kindest regards. Massimo
