Hi Mark, I have been Nikon user for 15 years. Recently I bought an Alpha 1. I have set my A1 with your CAMSET, so If I am taking a portrait or a landscape, how can I measure the exposure in a gray stone (for example) that it is out of my picture and then recompose and take the picture? Thanks.

The AEL button in its default setting allows the photographer to lock the exposure and then recompose the shot. I do not find any value in this workflow as it is too slow for the work that I do. As a mirrorless user you are now previewing the actual exposure at all times so you can increase or decrease the exposure while framing the shot. You have several useful tools to assist you in this process such as the live histogram and the zebras feature. I use Zebras set to 109+ Lower limit. If highlights are too bright the zebras will appear. If I need detail in these highlights I just roll back the exposure compensation dial until the zebras disappear and then take the shot. This can become a very fast and fluid workflow that is better suited to events where you don't want to miss the moment by having to find an exposure, lock the exposure and then frame the shot. If you do want the option of AEL you will need to reassign the AEL button back to Auto Exposure Lock. I have this button assigned to Recall Custom Hold 2.

Mark: I'm stumped by a problem on my A7R 4. When I set subject detection to Animal the camera won't let me select any of the tracking focus areas. Any idea what my problem might be?

Mark Galer

On the A7RM4 you can select Animal Eye AF or AF Tracking but not both. On other cameras you can select both. These include the A7C, A9, A9II, A1 and the new A7IV. Select tracking for moving animals and Animal Eye AF when you are doing close-up portraits where the depth of field is shallow. For your next question can you please use the current November Q&A forum as I may miss questions asked in old forums. Thanks.
