Hi Mark, hope you are doing well. I have a question about Focus stacking on the A7RV after watching your review. I am off to Namibia in September where there will be great landscape opportunities as well as wildlife. I don’t have a lot of experience/expertise with landscape photography but want to learn. I have always been impressed by your landscape photos. Do you think the focus stacking on the A7RV would make a big difference with the landscape shots? Thanks

My second body has been a 24 megapixel A7C for more than a year now. I figure the camera with wide and standard focal lengths I don't do much cropping. The heavy cropping usually occurs on the body carrying the telephoto zoom. I would have no problem taking an A9II as a second body.

Hi Marc I have reviewed my media setting on the a7iv, read the book and viewed your video. My shooting >Media>Rec Media setting 1/1 are as follows: Camera image Recording media set to Sort Recording, Movie image Recording Media set to slot 2 and Auto switch media set to ON. Despite the settings shooting on Aperture priority or your latest Action=2 I am still obtaining identical images on both slot 1(RAW) and slot 2(jpeg). I have checked and have not selected simultaneous recording which the camera appears to be doing. I am unable to find the problem. Thanks Joel

Mark Galer

Sort Recording will record 2 files for each individual capture. The file formats are decided by what you have set the Image Quality settings to. You can click on Image Quality in the Rec. Media Settings to see what you have chosen to record to slot 1 and Slot 2

Thanks Marc, I still have a problem. in Shooting Media>Rec Media Setting > Image quality it takes me to Slot 1 which shows File format, Raw file type etc. How does one move from Slot 1 to see what Slot 2 is set to, and change it if needs be ? I appear to be going around in circles always back to Slot 1.

Mark Galer

If you have selected 'Sort Recording' in 'Rec. Media Settings' you have to be in 'Image Quality Settings' to see what is being recorded to Slot 2. SLOT 1 will appear in the left column and SLOT 2 will appear in the right column as per the illustration in the eBook. Highlighting the top line item in each column will allow you to choose the file format for each.

I have a a7 iv with 16-35 Sony G Master and an 85mm Sony E-Mount lens. Mostly going to be doing landscape work and I have an aluminum tripod. Do most people turn SteadyShot off in this arrangement? I may be in windier locations at times as well. I'd have the same question for shooting portraits on a tripod.

By default, the a7 iv camset Mark shared stores jpg on one memory card and raw on another. I changed this to be jpeg on slot 1 and set memory recall to slot 1. I only have one card at the moment. I still get a warning that there is no SD card in slot 2. How do I remove this warning?

I'm on page 50 of the a7iv e-book, so I haven't gotten to all the camera settings yet. I'm trying to address some immediate issues I have with the camset. When taking photos, if the button is pressed hard it takes a group shot of several photos. If you tap it extremely lightly it takes one. I'm historically used to tapping lightly to set focus and then capturing a single shot. My questions are why is the camset defaulted to this? Should I keep it for some reason? How do I change it to a single shot mode? I wanted to ask here before I did any changes. Enjoying the e-book. Plan to go through 50 pages every week to get up to speed.

It's good practice to turn SteadyShot to off when the camera is mounted to a tripod. On Sony lenses the stabilizing gyros in the lens (OSS or Optical SteadyShot) should be temporarily disabled, but it is still good practice to turn SteadyShot to off - just in case. When working with fast shutter speeds, hand-held, SteadyShot is not providing you with any advantage and if you are panning the camera it will actively fight the movement unless you have enabled SteadyShot Mode 2 on the lens (if available). If you turn SteadyShot off on the lens it will also turn off IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization).

I think you are always going to see the flashing orange card on slot 2 when the memory card slot is empty.

I have set Continuous Shooting Lo for Portraits (Memory 1) and Continuous Shoot Hi for Action (Memory 2) and Single Shooting for Landscapes (Memory 3). If you are in the P, A S or M modes and you want Single Shooting press the right side of the Control Wheel to access the Drive Mode settings and change the setting from Continuous to Single shooting. If you want to override the registered memory for Portraits you need to turn the dial to 1, change the drive mode setting and then re-register the Memory on page 4 of the red Shooting Menu. This video tutorial will assist you: https://youtu.be/G0uS9kBZNGY I shoot portraits at events and don't pose my subjects so I always take at least 2 shots of each person I photograph - just in case they blink during one of the exposures.

Hi Mark Thanks for the info. I now have both the driver and the system software updater and again have followed the instructions with appropriate rebooting. Once the camera is attached to the Mac with the Setting usb use connection mode (mass storage) and I cliclk next, nothing happens and I then get this message. System software updater- could not find the camera! Followed the remainder of the advice and no joy. Your advice is again needed. Thanks Joel/Users/joelbern/Desktop/IMG_9852.jpeg

Close every application on the computer and then try changing the USB-C cable just in case that is causing a connection issue.

Hi Mark Have been using Sony gear for many years and run a small studio. Currently we are using A7r2, A7r3. I recently acquired A7IV to the A99ii for personal use. Over the years we have observed a definite redish tint with Sony Raw and Jpg files when opened and edited in Lightroom Classic. In the studio we use Capture 1 Sony Edition to tether for head-shots and passport pics, and find C1 colour more true to form than Lightroom. We have attempted to made a Lightroom preset to try and match the C1 colors, but it is not that great. We have dropped red and orange saturation in the HSL panel. We have calibrated our cameras and lens with the Xrite Clour Checker. Monitors also calibrated. Recently we had a baby passport shot that I need to edit in PS with final edits in LR. When it was printed, it was far too pinky red. Edited the same raw RAW image in C1 and the print colour was perfect. This has been a bugging issue for many years and I have come to the conclusion Adobe are at fault here. One solution is to switch to C1, but that needs to be the last resort and I do not like their interface at all. Would you know of, or can suggest any other solution? Many thanks John

Hi Mark I have changed the original USB C cable and utilised another Multi/micro USB cable in the appropriate slot (number 7 on the Sony Help guide for the camera) and lo and behold have the message on the camera screen USB mode mass storage. Next proceeded as required but again the system software updater message now reads Could not update with 3 instructions. The first reads to remove the camera safely drag and drop the icon of the memory card or drive to the trash. Keep the USB cable connected when doing so. The problem is that there is no icon of the memory card or drive on the computer screen. There is a new icon labelled PMHOME which I removed as per the remainder of the instructions and made no difference. Hence problem exists and my USB C cable does not seem to function with regard to updates but does so if used for charging? Any more ideas/Users/joelbern/Desktop/IMG_9853.jpeg

I am running out of ideas here. Some camera stores have offered the service of updating firmware for their customers. You should not be removing the camera but you do need to use the correct sequence, e.g, open the update app first and then connect the camera. Do this in the wrong order and the updated will ask you to disconnect the camera. This is an old forum so I may not pick up questions in a 3-month old Q&A forum.
