FE 1.4x Teleconverter (DNG Raw file Download) (Patreon)
Content
Extending the effective focal length of select Sony E-mount telephoto lenses, the FE 1.4x Teleconverter increases the lens's magnification by 1.4x for a narrower field of view. The FE 1.4x Teleconverter can attach to the following lenses:
FE 70-200 F4 Macro G OSS II
FE 70-200 F2.8 GM
FE 70-200 F2.8 GM II
FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM
FE 200-600 F5.6-6.3 G
FE 400 F2.8 GM
FE 600 F4 GM
Magnification Factors
A 200mm Focal Length increases to 280mm with the 1.4x Teleconverter
A 400mm Focal Length increases to 540mm with the 1.4x Teleconverter
If you shoot with a Teleconverter in APS-C mode the focal length increase to 420mm and 810mm respectively.
My Personal Opinion - 1.4x or 2.0x Teleconverter?
I believe there is a marginal loss in sharpness and AF Speed when using the 1.4x Teleconverter. In my experience the 2x Teleconverter lead to a noticeable loss in sharpness when testing this teleconverter with the original FE 70-200 F2.8 GM and the 400 GM prime. This may have been due to the increased subject distance and less than ideal atmospheric conditions. I have ordered the 2.0x Teleconverter to retest this converter with the FE 70-200 F2.8 GM II.
Impact on Maximum Aperture and Phase Detect AF (PDAF)
There is one-stop drop in maximum aperture when using the 1.4x teleconverter and a two-stop drop in maximum aperture when using the 2.0x teleconverter.
When using the Mid, Hi and Hi+ Drive Mode settings PDAF locks on the first frame of the sequence if the minimum aperture is exceeded, e.g., on most Alpha cameras this is f/11 but on on the A7RIII this is f/8. This makes the 2x Teleconverter problematic when matched with either the 100-400 GM or 200-600 G and used to capture fast action with the A7RIII camera. The A7III will have PDAF issues with the 200-600 G and 2.0x teleconverter. The 2.0x Teleconverter is a better match for the A7IV, A9 and A1 cameras when using the 100-400 GM and 200-600 G lenses.

Note > You will notice when reviewing some of the Raw files that I have cropped aggressively in post production - sometimes editing down to a 4K resolution (3840 pixels wide or 2160 pixels high). Increasing the magnification of your subject is one of the primary reasons for using a teleconverter (another being to maintain a high resolution [avoiding cropping in post] if you are wanting to create extra large prints). The final reason to use a 1.4x teleconverter is to increase the magnification of your subject when you are engaged in close-up photography.
