This lens is a bit of a beast, weighing in at 6.4 lb (just under 3 KG) but it's often considered as a must-have lens for any aspiring sports photographer. It's primary advantage is that it has an aperture 2 stops wider than a 100-400 GM zoom. This wider aperture will serve to lower the ISO significantly while rendering the background further out of focus. This ability to create figure/ground separation is especially important in a stadium where the players or athletes may be lost in a busy crowd of spectators if captured at f/5.6 instead of f/2.8 (especially when when the action is at the other side of the field or track).
Because sports photographers are often using very fast shutter speeds, the wider aperture will keep noise to minimum when using a brighter aperture, e.g., an ISO of 3200 with the 100-400 GM will be just ISO 800 if captured with the FE 400 GM at maximum aperture.
As well as being popular amongst sports photographers it has also very popular with bird photographers who prefer the wider f/2.8 aperture over the longer reach of the FE 600 mm F4 GM. I have personally chosen to own the 400 instead of the 600 as I do have the option of adding the 1.4x Teleconverter to render this a 540mm F4 lens if required. It is also just light enough to use hand-held without a monopod for short periods of time, e.g., at a sports match or motor sports race where the action is intermittent.
