The Batis 2.8/18mm Wide-Angle prime is a premium quality lens that may offer an alternative to either a 16-35 zoom or Sony's 20mm F1.8 G prime. It's advantage over the FE 16-35 F2.8 GM is that it is lighter and you can stack more than one ND filter. It's disadvantage to a zoom is that it is a fixed focal length and does not have an aperture ring, AF/MF switch or Focus Hold button. What it does have, however, is an LED depth of field readout when using Manual Focus, which is super useful when dialling in the optimum Hyperfocal distance (it has a readout in feet or meters and this will progress in fractions rather than whole units, i.e. increments between 2 and 3 meters, e.g. 2.5).
Many will not be able to justify the cost if you were to compare it to Sony's excellent FE 20mm F1.8 G lens, which gives nothing away in terms of optical performance, but is $500 cheaper than the Batis. I only justified my own purchase because I picked up a mint-condition one for half the new price.

Note > This video review was created when there were very few wide angle primes available for the E-Mount system and the only Sony wide angle zoom was the FE 16-35 F4 ZA. The Batis now has much more competition and as such it's higher price tag is more noticeable when compared to other lenses.
