So my dad used to manage a bowling alley and I grew up bowling a ton including some competitions in high school. All this to say, I know a thing or two about oil patterns. There are machines that lay oil down on the lanes and you can change the pattern of the oil much like a dot matrix printer. There are patterns that are less forgiving (more oil) that are usually only used for leagues or professional tournaments. These require you to adjust your throw to find areas of the lane that are dryer (allowing your ball to grip better and create more rotation instead of sliding in the oil). I have no idea what they look like but I think most alleys use a stock oil pattern and they typically only oil the lanes before league play. Bryan is correct that the more a lane sees play, the more the oil pattern gets used up. I guess it does move the oil around a little but most of the oil just ends up on the bowling balls. This is why you see bowlers wiping their balls with micro fiber cloths. If you have any other bowling questions, feel free to call me and ask if I have 10 pound balls.

Oh fun fact: lefties have a sort of advantage because their side of the lane isn't seeing as much ball action. Their oil pattern stays longer and they won't have to adjust their throw as quickly.
