It was actually Josh Whedon himself that made this movie happen. He tried to sell the continuation of the series to other networks, but no-one was interested. He then went to Universal and asked them for a way to continue the series as a film, and was introduced to an executive who had seen Firefly and immediately signed on to the project, even though there was no story that had been created yet. Interestingly enough, he originally pitched it as a low-budget film, but the studio actually wanted to make a real movie out of it, which is why the budget ended up being decent.

On YouTube there are two little shorts called the river Tam sessions. About two minutes each not worth getting excited about but worth watching and I believe there are comics.

"I want more!" The lament of the Firefly fan. There is nothing else unless you want to read some graphic novels. Yes Mal was stabbed, however stab wounds take time to incapacitate. You will eventually bleed to death internally but in the meantime are mostly able to be active. This is why you are taught to slash instead of stab with bladed weapons in a fight. Two fighters stabbing each other will keep going until they both bleed to death.

While the movie answered a lot of questions, the Shepard's backstory is one it did not. I think intentionally so. Perhaps it could not be done justice in a 2 hour movie. My personal theory is that he was an Operative but eventually became disillusioned and quite.
