As some of you are likely aware, Patreon recently added a feature that allows patrons/subscribers to optionally make an annual(yearly) payment all in one go rather than monthly installments. These payments are tier-specific/I believe you can select which tier you're paying for.

This is entirely optional, so I see little harm in activating the feature for those who may be interested. That said, I am curious to know how many would in fact be interested in this feature, if any.

Would you like the option to make annual payments?

Your response helps me to understand patrons better, so thanks in advance.

Confused about the feature? Think of it like this: let's say you're a $10 per month patron. Each month, Patreon charges you $10. Rather than charging you $10 monthly, you'd be charged $120 up-front, which would keep your subscription active for 12-months, aka a year.

Personally I always prefer monthly payment since it makes it easier to budget but I don't see any problem with allowing it as an option for those who aren't like me, honestly.

The-Exotic-Titan

The maximum discount that creators can offer for the monthly subscription is 16% for whoever is wondering. I perfer monthly because then I can go into higher tiers when I want and then drop back down later

I am hesitant to pay for a year, because I have had to stop supporting devs who have not updated their game in 3 months, and have not communicated why. What stops the dev from getting the payment for a year, then stop developing? Will we get our money back? Sorry, I vote no, monthly is my preference.

SantaTheHutt

I think an annual option is a great option for creators that have a well-established track record of creating content. Unfortunately, the indie games market is littered with devs who bailed on their projects.

Both of the above comments are valid points. There's of course a small risk involved for the person pledging. That said, the benefit of annual pledging also lies with the pledge moreso than the creator, so best to just weigh risk v reward and use your personal judgment for it.

Blyss

so long as it doesn't inconvenience you, the content creator, i see no reason why the option would be bad

Vance Watson

Voted no as ive seen many devs just milk this for money with nothing being done to further the project. I like being able to cancel payments when that happens.

Honestly the best system for patrons is the pay by release I've seen one developer use. Once a vn/game is in full swing, keeps the developers honest and let's the patrons feel like they're getting something for every payment. Baring that, too many releases a month will wear out a developer, and too many months between releases disenfranchises the patrons. That said, the quality of Radiant is worth a little extra wait.

Tao Dude

I voted no: I get paid monthly and I support too many devs to make one-off yearly payments.

Personally I'm not crazy about the way the poll is written while I voted no(for many of the reasons listed above), I think it would be a nice feature for those that might want it. It has got me thinking though, I support another game(I'm not going to name and shame), anyway up until Christmas it was putting out nearly monthly updates, this year we have had one, now I have continued to support them, I like the work they are doing, but I'm not sure how I would feel if that hadn't been my choice to continue my support monthly and I had paid an annual fee for such a drop off in content delivery.

Jack R Voss

Yeah, I've had far too many where I supported a game and then the dev just disappeared. I would be much more angry and much less likely to support another if I had paid a yearly amount as opposed to a monthly amount.
