In 1968, renowned demonologists Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) investigate the Annabelle case, in which friends Debbie (Morganna May) and Camilla (Amy Tipton) have a possessed doll. A spirit, claiming to be a young girl named Annabelle Higgins, which caused disturbing hauntings. The Warrens explain the spirit was using the doll as a conduit to possess one of the girls. Three years later, in 1971, Roger (Ron Livingston) and Carolyn Perron (Lili Taylor) move into a farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, with their five daughters: Andrea (Shanley Caswell), Nancy (Hayley McFarland), Christine (Joey King), Cindy (Mackenzie Foy), and April (Kyla Deaver). Their dog, Sadie, refuses to enter the house. Paranormal events occur within the first few nights Carolyn contacts the Warrens, who conduct an initial investigation, during which Lorraine, a clairvoyant, sees that a dark entity has latched on to the family so that even leaving the house will not free them. Research reveals that the house once belonged to an accused witch and Satanist named Bathsheba Sherman. The Warrens conclude they have sufficient evidence to receive authorization from the Catholic Church to perform an exorcism, but Father Gordon (Steve Coulter) explains that approval would have to come directly from the Vatican. After some struggle, Ed is able to complete the exorcism and condemn Bathsheba back to Hell.
