"Break His Legs!" | Sopranos - 3x7 Second Opinion | Group Reaction

Suraj, Navi, Chris and Pat of The Normies present their reaction and review to The Sopranos Season 3 Episode 7 "Second Opinion." In Episode 7, Junior (Dominic Chianese) has complications with his surgery and cancer treatments so Tony (James Gandolfini) takes matters into his own hand. In the meantime, Carmela (Edie Falco) visits Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) alone and moves to donate a large sum of money to her daughters college to make up for the guilt of being an enabler to Tony. While adjusting to being a made-man Christopher (Michael Imperioli) has conflicts with Paulie (Tony Sirico) who continues to haze him. Tonally speaking, this episode was filled with dread and irony; everyone (Junior and Carmela in particular) seeks 'second opinions' and reassurance from authority figures, yet no one truly wants the truth. The episode title (Second Opinion) becomes a metaphor for the (human) desire to outsource responsibility; to hear what we want rather than confront what we know. The same way we, as the audience, continue to find ways to rationalize our love for Tony (by principally sympathising with a monster, lol) to feel morally safe while watching him (and others in the family) do horrendous stuff. God, I fucking love this show. (And btw, I'm with Pat about the school extorting them for more money. FOH!)

To explain the Childhood and Ethnic Pride parade comment by Carmela's therapist. He's basically saying that some people, instead of taking accountability for their bad behavior, use their bad childhood or background as an ethnic minority for justification of themselves behaving badly.

A core part of his character established since the pilot episode is his fondness for animals and throughout the series up till this point has him being much softer towards kids (the link of innocence between kids and animals is common one) . Pretty surprised you guys think he would ever hit the dog. If Tony is continuing to see Melfi (or any therapist but obviously the show wants to keep her, and Tony responds better to maternal figures) there's always a sliver of a chance for him to change for the better. Even if it's not a big drastic blockbuster change. It still may be a net positive. A more benign tumor instead of a cancerous one.

The guy who plays Juniors cancer surgeon also plays Walts cancer surgeon in Breaking Bad...... Lmao...had to be intentional

One of my favorite scenes from the show, Carmella with the Jewish therapist. What is very clear when you hear her talk about Tony's mob life is that she really doesn't care about any of the criminal things that Tony gets up to, it's that he's unfaithful. "Probably the least of his misdeeds", exactly. The first time where she's really confronted with what is also her role in that criminal enterprise.

Veya

Dont think it’s true to say that she doesn’t care. She confesses to the priest in season one about his crimes and her breakdown was at it’s strongest there when talking about that rather than the affairs. Same thing here, her emotional response was also at its strongest when the therapist brought up him being in the mob not about the affairs. It isn’t binary.

#SundayRundown To answer your question about Tony at the end...No, he wouldn't have hit the dog, and that's all I will say on the subject. Going into more detail about it would risk spoiling certain plot points.

Every major character in this episode acts like a hypocrite. Christopher often complains that the mafia has gone to hell because no one follows the rules anymore — yet at the same time, he tells Ade that he doesn’t pay Paulie everything he’s supposed to according to those very rules (10% of all earnings, with a $6,000-a-week minimum). Paulie told Christopher several episodes earlier that if he ever has a problem with anyone — family or outsiders — he should tell Tony. But when Christopher actually does that, Paulie threatens him and warns him never to do it again. Tony bullies Angie and tells her to blame Big Pussy for her money problems, even though Tony knows exactly why Pussy isn’t around to support his wife and dog anymore. Carmela knows Tony is a mobster. She knows where the money comes from — that it’s blood money. But hey, it’s all fine as long as she gets her cut.

Hank Scorpio

Tbf "come to me/other person if you have a problem" doesn't mean literally any small problem you have. You're expected to be an adult at the end of the day. Chris' "problem" is that he disrespecting the arrangement him and Paulie (and by extension, Tony) had and Paulie's not letting him get away with it. That's on Chris....

Hank Scorpio

Yeah Tony has a deep love for animals lol

I can agree with everything but the Big P argument. He already cut a deal with the FBI to do his time and then go to witness protection; at no time did he tell his wife or kid of that deal and everytime he talked to his fbi contact, he never mentioned his wife being with him in witness protection. He was gonna leave his wife and kid to start a new life which is very scummy. If Big P got away with his plans, Angie or his kid wouldn't have been taken care but would have to fend for them selves. Since the gang took care of Big P, Tony is now obligated to take care of her to a certain extent.

Navi wins shirt of the Day. Awesome shirt. No, Tony was never gonna hurt the dog but it's the threat that he will which keeps all of us on the edge of our seat. Paulie was way out of line but i think Tony and Paulie are trying to Chrissy on his toes because once he gets comfortable, he'll fall back into his vices, which is something Tony does not want since Chrissy is now made. I see Power as a central theme in this episode..... The power the cancer doc has on Junior The power melfi and her psychiatrist friend has on their patients The power the university has on the parents of students the power Paulie has over Chrissy The power Tony has on almost everyone and finally the power Carmella has by just being with Tony. Her one time doctor told her everything she knows already, just because he said it bluntly doesn't mean it changes who she is. When her Mom brought up how she could've been with someone else, Carm brings up Tony getting her Father work cause of the power he has in that industry. When Carm wanted Meadow to go to a college close to the family she practically threatened her neighbor and Sister to write a recommendation, even though another kid deserved it more. Carm feels bad about what her husband does but it seems when she's flexing her power she seems just fine abusing it to get her own way. Look at the end of the episode, she got Tony to give the 50k even though he didn't want to and then went to have a nice dinner with her hubby. In the end we prolly saw who has the most power in the episode.

"Stupid-a fukin game."

The BB creators have said that without Sopranos, there is no Breaking Bad. I’m sure you’re right about Kennedy.

PIG

Yeah, I think that was his point too. They explore that a lot in this show.

Hank Scorpio

As someone who's seen both shows multiple times. There's so many instances of Sopranos/Breaking Bad semi to full blown crossover/homage's. If you've seen both shows I recommend looking into it on Reddit. You'd be shocked how many there are. But your right. When James Gandolfini died (I believe BB was still going at that point as well) Vince Gilligan and Bryan Cranston both tweeted out there RIP's and how "without Tony Soprano, there would be no Walter White"

Hank Scorpio

Melfi basically said as much to Tony when he went on his "Italians were treated poorly back in the day rant" as if that justifies his actions (which The Normies agreed with at the time)

Hank Scorpio

What the therapist is saying is exactly what Melfi said to Tony after Chris got shot and was recovering in the hospital (2x9 I believe?) when he went on his diatribe to Melfi (who's also Italian) about the early Italian immigrants and their experience in America back in the day as if that justifies what he does in the current day. She said "That might all be true, but what do poor Itailian immigrants have to do with YOU and what happens every morning YOU step out of bed?" (Something you guys agreed with when she said it btw) Carmela's therapist is basically saying the same thing Melfi was, Melfi just did it in a much nicer way. A short story to sum it up. 2 brothers had an alcoholic father. 1 grows up to be completely sober, never drank in his life and 1 grows up to be an alcoholic himself. When both brothers are asked why, they give the same answer "Because my dad was an alcoholic"

Kwame James

Ok pat with that number situation Chris is a soldier and Paulie is his captain so all the money Chris makes in a week he has to give Paulie 10% and all the money Paulie makes in a week he has to give Tony 10% so he said at minimum he wants 6k but everyone Chris is working with knows Paulie and respects/fears him so if Paulie asked how they do this week and they say they made 150k and Chris still kicked up 6k he is disrespecting Paulie

Kwame James

Small correction with that with your Paulie part Chris is a soldier in Paulie's crew he should've talked to Paulie to be honest if he wasn't Tony's nephew he wouldn't have that much access to Tony you think Vito can go see Tony to complain about Gigi it's too small of a issue for Tony to get involved

Stanley Etienne

No, Tony would not have hit that dog. You will understand why in future episodes.

PIG

Sopranos constantly hints how progressivism has lost its way over the decades. It’s not exactly a popular or likable opinion to most people, because we need progressivism, but I think it’s a sad truth the creators fold into the story and alarming the audience like in that scene.

PIG

lol I like that last story
