Bummer that you didn't have the full MHA crew for this episode. Great episode!

Jackie Gibson

Ain't no way Rana missed the final fight of my hero 😂 but besides that this episode is one of best of the show the original "you say run" ost playing and callbacks from throughout the series, I had so many emotions watching this and even was joining in on the GANBATTE! the Japanese saying of do your best/you can do it ❤️

SergeTroy

Hey, sorry to jump in here but is there any real hope of getting the (Premium) Reaction to ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ today, or is that more likely to be Wednesday? I’ve done a bad job at tracking prior releases. Also, why no Mickey and / or Chris? Just a scheduling or space issue?

I’m gonna be the one rarepair shipper and say Izuku and Itsuka from class 1B, girl with big fist and orange hair. The boy needs a strong girl to tell the cashier he didn’t order pickles.

Dub vs Sub this episode

Ren Davis

This episode was the mission statement of the series and I had a lot to say about it. It’s too long for the Sunday Rundown, so y’all can skip this when you’re looking for comments to add 😅: Izuku Midoriya Rising was the perfect culmination of what it means to be a hero. Horikoshi doubled down on Izuku Midoriya as the protagonist of the series. He took all of the crybaby jokes and literally made that the strength of the character. He was a plain boy of humble beginnings who cried way too much. But instead of giving into the pressure of trying to make Deku “cool,” he opted to have Deku stand on business by flipping that perceived weakness into strength. Deku is not like All Might. He doesn’t exude strength and doesn’t seem particularly mighty. However, that’s precisely what makes him heroic. His undying will to save people at all costs despite his fear and weakness is the essence of heroism. It inspires others to go beyond their weakness to be heroic as well. If Deku can do it, we all can do it. Everything came naturally to All Might. He single-handedly held society up on his back. But it’s precisely because of that quality that made people feel like they didn’t have to be heroes. Deku is the antithesis of that. And this is an idea that Horikoshi set up back during the Sports Festival. After hearing about Shoto’s backstory, Deku laments that Shoto has a much cooler story and he should be a shonen protagonist. However, during their fight, Deku realizes that Shoto is handicapping himself out of spite towards his father. Trauma only led to Shoto cutting off his nose to spite his face. Deep down, that isn’t the essence of a hero. Shoto was acting out of hate. Out of pain. Out of loss. The exact factors that All For One believed made you stronger. Shoto might have a “cooler” backstory on paper, but it’s a mistake to think strength can only come from trauma. That our primary worth is to suffer. Like Sero said, he realized that empathy and compassion make for stronger people when Shoto was able to defeat Dabi. Sero himself was just a plain guy, only driven by the desire to be his best. He was even more plain than Midoriya, but that didn’t stop him from standing up to All For One to save his friend. Having a background character, an extra that All For One looks down on, directly refute his ideology at the end was the perfect choice. It’s the same reason why All For One couldn’t understand Deku. Why he hated Kudo so much, and Bakugo by extension. Why Mineta’s look in Season 7 when Mineta saved Tokoyami bothered him so much. He hates the idea of weakness. Midoriya telling All For One that he’s not a Demon Lord and that he’s nothing but a lonely man was so good. Deep down, All For One just wanted to be with his brother. In his own twisted way, he loved Yoichi and felt nothing without him. That tracks. It’s also a nice touch that Deku allowed Shigaraki to be a hero at least for a few seconds in taking down All For One. He got to achieve his childhood dream for a moment. The promise of One For All. So Deku being the embodiment of weakness as strength was the perfect statement to end the series on. The perfect counter to All For One.

Just so you know Compress is alive but sadly they have removed his scenes with Geten from the Anime during this arc. They were shown during one of the Dabi "fights" and it reveals that Geten is from the same family tree as Rei but of course his branch went somewhere else. But yeah Compress is alive and in prison with Geten.

Gonna say, they changed up a good bit of the dialogue here for the Dub that took away from this episode. You guys should go back and watch the sub version of this one, particularly Uraraka's lines about the meaning behind Deku's name, and how it ties into this moment. I can't believe they changed that up, what for? Oh, and he did say "Smash". Suraj, I watched the uncut and couldn't make out your subtitles, but I've seen before where they keep the subtitles from the original sub. If that's the case, it isn't the subtitles that were awful, it was the dub itself. Uraraka doesn't say his name "sounds kind of cute". She says his name sort of sounds like the words for "you can do it", and that's what Ida was referring to when he said he understands what she meant that day. It's unfortunate they changed it up so much it doesn't even make sense now, unless Ida really thinks his name is cute now, lol. His mom also yells "you can do it" along with everyone else, but they changed that as well.

#sundayrundown firstly mr compress is still alive we see him (in the manga) during the dabi/todoroki fight in prison talking to geten (ice villain from plf) about how his family was always obsessed with designer babies and genetically pure quirks this is where its reveals he’s actually a lose relative to dabi and shoto and is related to their mom through the himura family. i have no idea why the anime cut this scene but compress is alive and is in prison, we are not clear on togas status last we saw of her she was giving blood to ururaka now ururaka is in a helicopter and we haven’t seen toga. i also want to talk about some translations real quick. “gambare” the word all the characters say in the sub is translated to “you can do it” which is mostly what everyone says in the dub as well. in the english manga it is translated to “do your best” which is a phrase we hear hundreds of times in the dub. the flashback with ururaka is one of the few dubbing errors that’s massive in the show, in the manga ururaka tells him she likes deku because it sounds like “do your best” assuming they changed it because they don’t sound similar in english. but replaced it with “i think it’s kinda cute” personally i think they should’ve just kept the faithful translation and have to explain the context to us

Side note: This episode really makes me wish Shoto got his Rising in an episode title. Horikoshi had Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto all have Origin/Rising chapters. Others like Tenko/Tomura, Toshinori Yagi (who had his in the same chapter), and Momo (hers was just her surname Rising, a different frame than full name Origin/Rising) got some too, but the trio were the only three with the specific Origin/Rising framing that showcased their starting point and growth. Shoto’s Rising was understanding that his quirk did not make him a masterpiece. That despite all of his talent and potential, he still needed his family to stop Dabi. Needed their support to be their hero. The ultimate counter to the way Endeavor raised him. He had already been recognizing that, but it all crystallized in that moment after stopping Toya. Shame that wasn’t the title 😭 But it’s all cool. We vibe and we move on to the final episodes 😎

The Normies

Welcome to Derry is a same day edit, so it goes on YouTube as soon as it is ready. At least, the edited version. The uncut will be posted on early access as soon as it is ready as well.

SergeTroy

KK. DON’T imagine Pennywise staring over your shoulder, waiting impatiently for the release. 😉

Kenneth Ahluk

Someone on the animation team must love my fave, Iida 🤣🤘 dude looks glorious every time Also i love how Sero answered AFOs question for Deku and just rushed in

s4ean

Lol, don't get us started. I don't usually comment but this was pretty bad.

Ren Davis

Definitely preferred the sub line of All Might saying Deku was his hero since the moment he saw Deku step in to save Bakugo from the Sludge Villain. Felt like a good cyclical moment where Deku became the hero to his hero.

For the most part, the dub did a great job, the only part that took me out of the emotional part of Deku’s “final smash” was the “you got this” montage , the way the lines were delivered didn’t have any emotional impact that the Japanese dub had. Outside of that, it was great.

Cameron_1

Ya sub episode was better

Aby

Some things really got lost in translation this episode, wow. I think the voice actors were great, but they couldn’t really make up for the emotional impact that was lost because they took liberties with translating Uraraka’s line in season 1. Maybe it’s because I watched the sub first, but it definitely made me feel much more emotion. I wish you could react to the sub version too, at some point. Regardless, your reactions were great, as always!

The Greater-Scope Villain

Say what you will about All For One, but he is probably the single greatest pure evil villain in all of anime. The reveal last episode alone was insane, top-tier levels of manipulative evil. A true Demon Lord in human form—a perfect example of what a powerful, competent, threatening, pure evil, big bad villain should be. Almost the entirety of Seasons 7 and 8 was literally just All For One running the most insane gauntlet of every hero in the show—and WINNING for the most part until the very end. He could never have been defeated without the participation of every single one of these characters, and that’s the beauty of “One For All” vs. “All For One”—the strength of a thousand weaklings vs. the strength of a single overwhelming person—selfless good vs. selfish evil.

#SundayRundown Just a few things you misremembered or weren’t translated well: 1. Toga died in the battle against Ochaco last season. She gave all her blood to Ochaco. 2. Compress is alive. He just got seriously injured and imprisoned in his last battle. 3. Camie’s quirk doesn’t require her to get naked, it’s just illusions. The naked part was Toga disguised as her. 4. You learned from commenters back in season one that Deku means both “useless” and “you can do it”. It was incorrectly explained in season one. In the dub of this episode, everyone is screaming “You’ve got this!”, when in the sub it’s “You can do it!” Referring to the significance of his name and how Ochaco encouraged him to reclaim it in that flashback. 5. In dub, All Might says Deku is the greatest hero. In sub, he said you’re MY hero. I really admire the performances the dub team did for this show. But the dialogue changes have always seemed a bit more significant than other dubs. I’d be interested in seeing even just Suraj do solo sub reactions on Twitch if he ever feels like it way down the line. This show has great rewatch value.

Narutoanime16

This whole season feels like a movie like goddamn still can’t get over the hype ! All for One is like the plague just never stays down lol. Love that all the heroes everywhere came to help even the US President was sending help being like “fuck the government I’m sending support to Japan! “ All for One Definately the most manipulative villain & is just pure evil , him & the villains of Attack on Titan are wild

Narutoanime16

I think either or you still get that emotion like it’s jsut a different language that doesn’t change the feeling you get lol. It’s the same feeling it’s like talking in Spanish vs English same shit

Meh

I'm just glad you guys called out what stood out to me as very on brand for the US to show up when it's over XD

Meh

Think you're a bit off on 4, but also afraid I might be having a confidently wrong moment XD. My understanding primarily is that "deku" doesn't have dual meaning. Actually not sure it's even a word so much as a word play from Bakugo to insult him by shortening "dekiru (can/capable)" It's been so long I don't remember exactly how they worded it in S1 but I'm pretty sure his motivation in keeping Deku as his name was to "turn Deku to Dekiru" as an F you to his bully by being the most capable hero who was always deemed as useless. The flashbacks aren't really tied to his name specificly (or at least they used the wrong part for it because I'm pretty sure I do remember her actually saying something with dekiru in it then too)

Phil

Damn it's kinda of crazy how Deku said at the beginning of the arc that he was gonna try and save Shigaraki but ends up killing him by punching him into dust

phunkrsd

It really isn’t, unfortunately.

Kero20042

I mean, I don’t speak Japanese. But yes, Bakugo basically used a play on words to make fun of him. And Deku used a version of it that made it positive. That’s all I mean. In the flashback for this episode, in sub they show Uraraka saying “it’s spelled kind of like the words for you can do it”. But in dub she just “likes it and thinks it sounds kinda cute”. Just two very different versions of the conversation. Everyone is screaming “you can do it” after that flashback and Ida is speaking about that conversation they had specifically. It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But because the dub team messed up a bit at the beginning of the show, the scene doesn’t have the same impact in this latest episode.
