I like this version of Hawkman, and while I was frustrated that you guys kept being mad that he "wasn’t an alien", I understand the confusion. In the comics, Hawkman is portrayed as either the human archaeologist Carter Hall or as a Thanagarian (alien) police officer, Katar Hol. This is the human version. My main problem with this movie is that Black Adam is supposed to be an anti-hero, or straight up villain, but he is basically a hero in this (no matter how many times he says: "I'm not a hero") because of The Rock. The Justice Society have to be punks. Why? Because Black Adam has to look good. Why? Because The Rock said so. He wasn't just "an actor" in this, he was super involved with the entire production and shaped it to make himself look good at the expense of the rest of the movie and Black Adams historical role as a Shazam villain. Imagine if Loki was *introduced* with the Disney+ show (without the build-up of him as a villain). This is the DC equivalent.

Dr Sleep reaction please!

I remember leaving the theater thinking I should’ve stayed home

I like this movie for what it was, but I was disappointed, he should had started as a Shazam villain. Then we get the anti hero. Also there's a Shazam and superman versus black Adam animated short that you guys should check out.

Gambit3838

I didn't mind this movie. I really wanted to see the continuation of the dceu. Unfortunately he fucked it all like the Cena heel turn. 🤬

I made a similar comment in the Flash discussion but the problem is here too. The story these movies are telling require established character dynamics over several movies to resonate. There’s a better version of this movie that is still Black Adam centric but uses the DCEU established Billy Batson/Shazam as the thematic sounding board to Amon about the meaning of a hero from another kid instead of being lectured by a stagnant Justice Society as they destroy an ancient city for comic relief. The reason Hawkman feels off is there are several convoluted versions of Hawkman’s backstory but the movie never really picked one. He’s just a generic tough guy. There’s a version of Hawkman that has reincarnated through several lives including one that interacted with Black Adam and Dr Fate in previous lives. Instead of using this, the movie just says we got some scrolls that contradict his story. So yeah a movie where Hawkman and Dr Fate acknowledge they have each lived through several lives and Dr Fate makes the choice to give this one up for him should be a powerful moment similar to Bucky/Cap “end of the line” but this is their first movie and it’s as backup to Black Adam.

#SundayRundown 😂 “the hierarchy of power, in the DC universe, is about to change” OH IT SURE DID ROCK LMAOOO 😭. Lesson: Don’t bring a rock to a Gunn fight I’m genuinely shocked you guys liked this movie lol. This movie was arguably the nail in the coffin for the DCEU. Rock tried to do an entire takeover of DC & it resulted in him purposely sabotaging the Shazam sequel, trying to make Black Adam the face of the universe when he’s a C villian/anti hero for a B tier hero, tried to gain favor with the Synderbros & just made a outright basic superhero movie for it to end up flopping after all that promo. There’s so many YouTube videos that break this story down & it’s hilarious. It’s to the point that his perception & Hollywood star slowly declined & he ran back to the WWE lol. The best part of the movie is the Justice Society. The acting and portrayal for Dr Fate was so good. Also, the ‘Hawk people’ aren’t all aliens, some are reincarnations like how Isabela/Hawkgirl was in Superman & some are just human

I had a whole rant about the couch's Aldis Hodge slander and Navi's complete misunderstanding of Hawkman (even though she saw Superman), but I'll let that go and focus on enlightenment. The Justice Society in the comics had Mr. Terrific as the leader and both Captain Marvel (yeah, I said it!) and Black Adam were members at one point.

thespiderman360

There are two different Hawkman origins. The golden age origin is where he is a human with Nith metal wings from Egypt who has been resurrected multiple times over the last 5000 years. The second is from the silver age where he is alien cop from Thanagar and he has real wings attached to his body.

thespiderman360

Over the decades writers have tried to connect these two origins. This was done to simplify Hawkman’s timeline but most of the time it just lead to more confusion.

SundayRundown: So Pat said that fight would be sick tell Pat there is a movie that has that fight Superman /Shazam The Return Of Black Adam DC Animated film. Also Black Adam would kill Superman because he Superman is weak to Magic and Magic is what Black Adam is all about

Anthony Turner

I know this is on the bad DC movie list. But as someone who saw it when it came out, I was saying, they might change their minds when they see it. Black Adam really wasn't a bad movie. Problem was, as Chris said, ppl were done with the DCEU/ Snyderverse Brand. Blue Beetle suffered because of it too, that wasn't a bad movie either, just a fun origin. Dr Fate was the highlight for me, that suit & helmet was 🔥. I didn't mind Hawk Man but I get the irritation 🤣. I still feel Fate didn't have to die but, some was going to we felt it. I wanted James Gunn to bring Pierce Bronson to the DCU as the Dr but, that won't happen I guess . Great reaction guys.

Anthony Turner

I feel the same about Rocks Black Adam portrayal. He's a villain, I felt like they made a mistake trying to make him a hero. Good movie though. But DC is in better hands.

Please watch Titans!!!

LoL, you guys spent the whole movie trashing the portraits of the "DC heroes" and confuse about DC related stuff, like who are the intergang, what is the task force x, and only like the part where Rock play a uncap version of "dark superman" which people already hate back then, also plus this is nothing like Black Adam in the comic book. And you guys wonder why people don't like this movie? What if in Superman 2025, Lex luthor was trying to protect Jarhanpur by giving them weapons and Superman come with his american way to stop the war and end Lex luthor's illegal weapon trade meanwhile completely ignored what Boravia did? Would you guys call that a good movie? Maybe some guy under a rock sees the movie and think Superman is a villain story and though it was a good movie? He could be right, if we take out the context that Superman supposed to be a good guy with good moral. But for anyone has a slightest idea of who superman should be would not like the movie.

J. J.

fuck no, it's god awful

Are we gonna get a Jonah hex reaction and are we gonna have cowboy navi in it?

#Sundayrundown the hawkman and hawkgirl i was introduced too was from the cw arrowverse where they are ancient egyptian royals and their main antogonist is vandal savage who only can secure his reincarnation cycle by killing hawkman and hawkgirl every time they reincarnate

Maurice Gray Jr

#sunday rundown They took lame creative license in one respect. In the comics, Al Pratt of the Justice Society was the ATOM, not the ATOM SMASHER. His godson (not nephew) Al Rothstein (at least they got that part right) did idolize his "Uncle Al" and eventually became a superhero like him. Young Al started off as Nuklon in a team called Infinity Inc. with other Justice Society children and proteges and reinvented himself as Atom Smasher much later. He developed those growing powers early on- the Atom never had that. There was so much more they could have done with Al and they reduced him to being a giant doofus who did more harm than good in Kandaq.

Gambit3838

There's a lot of lore and things to know from history like there's different iterations of Hawkman and the JSA PREDATE the JLA. But at this point none of that matters. This reaction was a reaction. See u in the next. 🤷‍♂️

n p

Hawkman's original origin is a human reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince. That's his origin throughout the JSA Golden Age era, which this movie adapts. He's close relationship with Doctor Fate during that era is partially because of their shared ancient Egyptian origins. The Thanagarian origin was only introduced later, during the silver/bronze age of comics, and didn't last long. Since the 90s in the comics, and JLU series continiuity, he's mostly been human, but they embrace a little of both through reincarnation ties to both ancient Egypt and Thanagar. Hawkgirl in the Gunn-verse is a meta-human from Earth, with ancient reincarnation ties to both origins. Young Justice and the 2008-2025 animated movie verse went full Thanagarian.

Jay

People that say Black Adam could beat Superman always forget that this is the dude who continously gets his ass handed to him by a 10 year old.

CJ Dennis

Y'all are pretty hard on the justice society here particularly with Hawkman 😂😂. Granted that might speak to the films clunky writing and poor introduction of the characters but still 🤣🤣. Also, it's kind of odd that cyclone and atom smashers have some flirtatious scenes but they don't go all the way with. If this film was made years ago they would have got together. Same with Black Adam and the mom, but no some modern movies I guess are just allergic to romance 😅😅.

CJ Dennis

Yeah I'm somewhat familar with that 🤔. The hawks have a long and overly convoluted history and most adaptations lean into the whole they are thanagarians thing. Also, where did you learn about Hawkgirl from Gunn's Superman?

CJ Dennis

Oh please lets here this rant. Not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious 🤔.

CJ Dennis

The Flash bombing was the main nail in the coffin for the dceu, but yeah the rock was becoming for trying to takeover this and the fast and furious franchise to boost his ego 🤔.

Billy Blanco

Hey remember that time the Rock tried to get us to care about this movie and then essentially takeover the DCEU? Thank god for James Gunn is all I'm saying.

HouseDogget

So the reason people hated this movie was because of the Rock. It was his attempt of a hostile take over of DC Studios. It was seen as ruining Black Adam, trying to Wrestlefy movie making and people didn't like Johnson using Cavill as a pawn to get people into the movie, especially since Black Adam has a designated superhero he's supposed to fight. Also the movie isn't bad, but it's extremely mediocre, even during the watch, everyone pretty much gave up on the script.

Andrew W

I'm a big fan of both Aldis Hodge (from Leverage) and Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest), so I am still annoyed that what could have been a 'big break' moment for either/both of them ended up being this mediocre mess that was saddled with such petty behind-the-scenes egos and drama.
