Rookies | Heated Rivalry 1x1 | The Normies Group Reaction!

Spidey, Chris, Marketa, Navi, Suraj, and Rana present their reaction and review to Heated Rivalry Season 1 Episode 1 Writer & Director: Jacob Tierney In the premiere of Heated Rivalry titled “Rookies,” we meet two talented young hockey stars who are destined to become more than just competitors. The episode opens in December 2008 when Shane Hollander, a gifted Canadian player, crosses paths with Ilya Rozanov, a standout Russian player, at the International Prospect Cup final, setting the stage for both rivalry and attraction. Rachel Reid is the Canadian author whose novel Heated Rivalry, published in 2019, became the foundation for the Heated Rivalry television series. Her books have made a huge impact on the queer romance genre, especially for fans of hockey and slow-burn love stories. I've heard a lot about this show, have not tried it but looking forward to doing so with a full Normies couch! RANA: remember that show you all were paid to react to called The Untamed? if you want more beautiful gay romance but in a different setting/culture, please continue watching the rest of that show, and also check out another show called Word of Honor. Hell, look up DANMEI. Lots of beautiful gay romance to be explored in that category in terms of books. Even though the shows adapted from the books are censored, the OG novels themselves are not and a lot of the most best and popular series are already officially published with English translations. I recommend Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (basis for show, The Untamed, but I recommend reading the novel series first since it makes the show make more sense), Scum Villain's Self Saving System (by the same author as the first series, abbreviated name MXTX, she's super popular), Heaven Official's Blessing (MXTX's most popular series), The Husky and his White Cat Shizun (different author, named Meatbun doesn't eat Meat...Chinese danmei authors used funny handles to protect their identity), Ballad of Sword and Wine (author Tang Jiu Qing), and Thousand Autumns (by Meng Xi Shi), just to name a few. Some of these series are pretty sexually graphic, some of more PG in terms of the romance (HOB and Thousand Autumns for example), all have great stories accompanying the romance. Hope you give some of them a try...maybe even for your reading club. I promise it's a rabbit hole you won't regret falling into.

#Sundayrundown that black chick actress illya hooked up with is the actual blood great-niece of the greatest soviet/russian hockey player of all time. The russian actors on the set were telling her how legendary her relative was (2 golds and a silver in olympics i think)

HOSPITAL GRIPPY SOCKS 🤣😭😭😭💀💀💀💀 I'M CRYINGGGGGGG

Katharina

Yes, thank you Rana!

Just a heads up, Crave has been sending out copyright strikes on reactions. I had my episode 3 reaction blocked, which i then appealed and they released a couple days later. But then they sent a delayed takedown request. So be prepared to potentially deal with that.

#SundayRundown I think Chris actually hit on the head partially why this show is so popular. It's the enemies to lovers trope that we see so often between rivals and especially with shounen protagonists like Sasuke and Naruto etc. It's the angst and will they won't they that has a special kind of flavour when you view it in terms of queerness that lacks from heterosexual depictions of romance. I feel like whereas the East has anime/manga and even film/TV that caters to this, the West has been behind in taping into this existing audience of people that want to see these stories given that care and love that Jacob Tierney did with Heated Rivalry

Tyler

Yes this exactly, there has been such an appetite for queer focused content in Na for so long, that’s why shows like Young Royals and Skam did so well internationally, and now there’s finally something made here that can reach a broader audience easier.

You guys don’t understand the can of worms you just opened. You better hope Rana can keep you guys on continuing this series because if you thought some of your followers were annoying about release schedules you haven’t met the HR fans. 😆😆😆

#SundayRundown can't believe I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but Rozanov and Hollander are actually based on two real hockey players. Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. They're both married to women irl, but their rivalry defined hockey for most of the 2000s - 2010s. Also fitting that Hollander and Rozanov play for Montreal and Boston since that is the biggest rivalry in the NHL. Russia losing to Latvia in episode 2 is also true to real life. Russia had an awful tournament in Sochi and did actually lose to Latvia. There are so many little details that make it clear the author and show runner really are true fans of the sport and it's so great to see hockey getting some love, even in a show that is about so much more than just hockey.

The Normies

Yes. It was originally a fanfic of the players. And the Scott and Kip story was a Stucky fanfic originally. The more you know.

Lauren

I mean the Crave title card comes up in HBO as well or wherever you watch it if that’s what you mean.

Lauren

The intimacy coordinator laid the outline and choreography but ancillary kisses and touches were all them. For example, she said she doesn’t know if the 2nd time the thumb in the mouth happens was in the script or just Hudson. She also said that Connor reaching up and touching Hudson’s face when they kiss was all him. While strictly controlled for comfort it also depends on the actors and I fear some people are getting to the point where these scenes are being overanalyzed to the point where they’re becoming clinical. Like they also ditched the modesty garments completely at a certain point (per Hudson) so their comfort level was high enough to take some liberties. 🤣

I’m enjoying the full reaction to this so much and I know this is a while ago so you may not even see the comment but someone tell me if they’re the girl who’s seen it twerk guides through the whole season because it is so distracting. I paid for a membership and I want to enjoy it because I’ve heard good things about this channel but all the little facts throughout the whole thng but just let them watch for the first time without all of that and have authentic reactions to the show
