firstly, this is gonna b good

Jaydelle

He was a man of true honor, willing to defend what was right and stand beside those who deserved it. He would have ruled with wisdom and grace and been an amazing King. Rest in peace, Prince Baelor.

Jaydelle

A sword right between the legs is one of the strongest messages Dunk could send — and it’s exactly what Aerion deserves (for Egg!)

Kung Fu Night

A Mulberry is a Tree and Duncan is a man.

SergeTroy

He was also politically savvy and the events leading up to this Trial of Seven caught him between his family, the laws of the realm, and his own values. It had to be a hard choice to stand by Dunk.

#SundayRundown Yall don't have to use this, it's long, and is just an explanation on how great the armor and sword work was, along with how exactly Baelor died. I want to reiterate what I've been saying for weeks now, I love this show so much as a book fan! They really nailed armored combat in this episode. Dunk being stabbed and struck repeatedly without true penetration (besides the lance, dagger to the thigh, through the hand, and the thrown sword through the thigh wounds), is completely believable if you understand how armor and medieval combat work. Even his injuries, while brutal, are survivable. Modern TV has skewed expectations, multiple wounds aren’t automatically fatal as long as vital areas like major arteries, the heart, or the brain aren’t hit, especially with adrenaline pumping like crazy. There’s also the common myth that chainmail is useless against piercing attacks, which isn’t true. Mail is effective against lighter strikes and glancing thrusts, though it can fail against a full-force heavy impact, like the lance Dunk took earlier. The contrast in fighting styles was fantastic, Aerion’s combinations versus Dunk's grit and desperation made the duel feel so raw and believable. It also echoes that perfect line from The Hedge Knight: “I am not Ser Duncan the Tall. I’m Dunk of Flea Bottom.” As for Baelor, many people missed a key armor detail: he’s a man in his forties wearing his 20 year old son Valarr’s armor, fitted for someone much younger and smaller. Poorly fitted helms reduce shock absorption and protection. Had he worn his own armor, which he didn’t bring as he was supposed to be a royal spectator only, the outcome would have been very different. Just look at Dunk, who took far more head punishment and still only suffered meaningful injury through the eye slit and a concussion from the multiple flail hits. Maekar didn't do it on purpose, you can see where he hit him when Dunk was dragging Aerion, Baelor slashed at his leg from behind, and Maekar blindly backswung and hit him right in the back of the head. Maekar was genuinely broken by this accident, and was cursed for the rest of his life by people as a Kinslayer for the rest of his life. He also holds a personal vigil for Baelor every year till he died.

SergeTroy

To be honest, I was pissed at Dunk freezing up, at how terrible he seemed in a fight, and the absolute beating he took. I want an ME to tell me if he should have still been alive. It got to the point where I wanted *Aerion* to smash his skull in because of it. Points to Suraj for noting Aerion would have wiped Dunk in a 1v1. He had trained for most of his life under the best (paid) masters at arms, he had the highest quality of arms & armor, and he was a psycho that wasn’t freezing up in combat.

LordApathy

Aerion is the one who hit Dunk with the lance. He then drops the lance and hits dunk with his morning star on his next pass, right after Dunk pulls the peice out. All of you on the couch and only one of you was paying attention and got it.

#sundayrundown. Ser Beesbury's only line of dialog is asking Baelor what they should do about the kingsguard. Baelor tells Beesbury not to worry he will handle the kingsguard. Beesbury is than killed in the first charge by ...... the kings guard RIP Beesbury and his honey mustache

PurportedGrey

Beeeeeeeesbury's are always dying to Targs or Kingsguards! Jaehaerys the 1st killed one in a trial by combat, while he was a 40 (or so) year old King, and then everyones favorite incel Cripen Dole, smashed Lyman Beeeeeeeesbury's head in to a table in HotD.

GodUsopp

Dunk isnt classically trained, hes just a huge guy who can take a beating and the blows he does land feel like 4 from a normal size guy vs Aerion who was handed a sword as soon as he could walk

SergeTroy

Yeah, I noted that. And I’m pretty sure Dunk took more wounds and simple damage here than the Hound did at the Inn at the Crossroads, and the Hound nearly died.

SergeTroy

I don’t think I’d say they were extremely close precisely, but Prince’s Baelor and Maekar were brothers on every level. They shared the commands in the Battle of Redgrass Fields that famously destroyed the Blackfyre Army (though it was another that killed Daemon). This is going to be horrible for Maekar; I’m a little worried to see how the actor and the director decide to portray it.

#SundayRundown This poor Ashford girl just wanted to celebrate her birthday and now the Heir to the Iron Throne and the Hand of the King is dead. Also between Dunk and Aerion, Aerion is the better sword fighter 100% and there were many moments in their fight where Aerion could have killed Dunk, he had the upper hand through most of the fight. But Dunk is hella big and hella strong and can take a lot of hits, once Dunk threw away the weapons and just went bear brawl is when he finally gained the upper hand and was able to win. It was Maekar that indeed killed Baelor because Baelor explained that the Kingsguard cannot touch him, they are only allowed to defend themselves by blocking if he attacks them, so the only person allowed to actually hit him in this trail was Maekar.

SergeTroy

And the Crown Prince and Hand of the King dies in a combat started either because a puppeteer stabbed a fake dragon or because Ser Dunk punched a princeling a few times then kicked him in the face. Seems reasonable.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

#SundayRundown Also fun fact but Baelor is not the first Targaryen to not have the standard Targaryen hair. In the books Princess Rhaenys (The Queen that never was) has long jet black hair with only one white streak. Her hair is that way due to her being half Baratheon. The show runners of HOTD however chose to ignore this, because they don't respect the source material their show is derived from ,but enough of me venting, lol. It's rare but when Targaryen's marry outside of their family, they do tend to have children with mixed color hair, Baelor, doesn't have white/silver blonde hair due to his mother, the current Queen ,being Dornish.

PurportedGrey

That was one of my biggest gripes of HotD S1, it completely undermines the whole "anyone marrying a Baratheon has black hair" element that kickes off GoT! The other gripe was the damn dagger being brought back as a stupid over arching plot device.

Dante Sparda

Peak ASOIAF this is what was missing in HOTD and GOT post season 4

Arctic_stark

HotD is just fanfic at this point. The author has openly disavowed it.

Arctic_stark

#SundayRundown I like how this show has been sprinkling information about the Blackfyre rebellions slowly and steadily. I’m very interested to see how they explain the rebellion and the individuals involved as we get to seasons 2 and 3 of this show. I’d pay good money for a flashback season in between but that’s asking for too much.

SergeTroy

Yeah, this couch may say HOTD is amazing, it’s wonderful! but to me it’s dead stinking garbage after season and especially with Rhaenyra linking up with her old friend that was deciding to sell out her whole family.

SergeTroy

The actor playing Maekar has done a fantastic job as such, he’s brought a lot of humor that carried with it real humanity. It actually worked very well for me, my memory from the novella (or graphic novel, I can’t remember) was of someone that was just slightly less stiff than Stannis.

Sean Carleton

#SundayRundown What a series! Duncan is definitely the Rocky Balboa of the Song of Ice and Fire universe. I felt every wound our hero withstood. Egg is a Platonic Adrian. And Ser Arlen is a combination of Mickey, Paulie, and force ghost Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Chaos T

Damn it Micky.... you had one job in the intro

Chriz Elkinberg

Whats with the Targaryens and killing immediate family sheesh

Chaos T

I hate Prince Aerion but have to give him props. He's a beast of a fighter. That sword throw into Dunk's leg was insane. Also, this episode did a pretty good job showing why blunt weapons like maces and war hammers were the weapon of choice for knights fighting opponents in plate armor. IRL plate armor had problems dealing with the devastating impact of those weapons. Broken bones, internal bleeding, and head injuries were common in that type of battle. Unfortunately, we don't see this a lot in live action media because Hollywood loves their sword fights. RIP Prince Baelor

LucasHolliday

#SundayRundown aight let's get into it. First off, yes Suraj, Raymun's shield was a green apple against Steffon's red just like the novella. Raymun was also the one who swung his sword and knocked Aerion off of Dunk after his hand was stabbed, the kid is loyal asf and a deft swordsman. Later Steffon is trying to get to the main duel to help Aerion, and Raymun gets in the way, you can hear one of them yell the other's name. Rana I feel you on the "kill them all" side of things after Baelor's death, but hold off, some of the other Targs are not so bad, you'll see on the finale. Pretty much just Aerion is the demon in this generation. Too bad he is a well trained fighter, or maybe Dunk woulda beat his ass with less stab wounds. Far as I can tell, the count is around 11 lacerations of some kind, the lance to the gut, 2 deep knife wounds to the gut, the knife to the left hand, 6 sword stabs/pokes (one straight and deep in the back, 3 lesser in the chest and abdomen, another in the upper honches of the back/neck/shoulder, and the sword throw into the leg) plus the slash from the sword hilt across the swollen left eye. The boy is a young 50 Cent. Many men wish death pon me forreal, he got knocked down by Maekar once in passing plus I believe one of the Kingsguard outta nowhere in passing. The flashback is at least 13 years ago, just after the last day of the First Blackfyre Rebellion with the Battle of the Redgrass Field and the death of Daemon I, uncle to Baelor and Maekar and pretender king of the Blackfyres trying to claim the Iron Throne which is a legitimized Targaryen bastard line. That guy Rafe and Dunk try to move was a Hightower. The song Egg sings in the 3rd episode is The Hammer and the Anvil (Baelor & Maekar) chronicling that battle. Ser Lyonel is definitely alive, he was holding back Maekar alongside Baelor just as the book depicts. And Humfrey Beesbury and Humfrey Hardyng who both died on Dunk's side were featured for a split second in episode 3 right after Dunk and Egg finish their breakfast sandwiches. That joust is called the Battle of Humfrey, twelve tilts of the lances before Hardyng unhorses Beesbury's honey mustache to the dirt, but in the show they both fall off for the effect. You don't see Beesbury die in the trial but you can see Hardyng getting struck off his horse by Ser Donnel of Duskendale I believe, just before Aerion flails Dunk and knocks him into the flashback. Last thing, Ser Arlan was burying his nephew who died during the fighting in the Crownlands, that's why he was that drunk in Fleabottom when he saves Dunk. And he's singing some Dothraki war chant or war story, indicating that he's been to Essos. This was the best episode of the World of Ice and Fire Verse since the old Game of Thrones days bar none.

Jared

#SundayRundown I don't remember if people have stated this but to put into perspective Dunk here is somewhere between 16-18 years old and that is also why the actor does an amazing job of showing his naivety to everything. This also shows just the guts and will from him to take all these hits and keep going for what is right at such a young age. (Not 100% sure but I just think they are using older actors because more seasons are coming and they don't want to be constantly bringing in new actors of differing ages for each person)

Chaos T

I'm doing a GoT/HOTD rewatch with my girlfriend who's a big fan of the books and live action media. What you mentioned about the Targaryen hair triggers her when she watches HOTD and goes into rants about it 😂

Arctic_stark

#SundayRundown Not that it matters much but Joffrey Baratheon was actually decent at fighting with a sword in the books. Just like Aerion, he would have received the absolute best training possible from a very young age. Most of these princes and lordlings are good fighters, its something they are made to take seriously from a young age. Someone like Samwell Tarly with zero aptitude for martial arts really stands out.

GodUsopp

The hound nearly died because his wounds got infected since he wasnt anywhere near any healers he was out in the middle of nowhere, he didnt die because the wounds where fatal, Plus dunks even more tankie than the hound , Especially since we both know the hound is almost assuredly alive so that means someone did come by and heal him , they did this battle in a major lords lands who definitely has a maester , and you dozens of other major and minor lords who surely traveled to a tourney with healers

PurportedGrey

It's a big thing for some book readers, alot of the characters and plots are all physical feature based! Jon Snow having black hair and brown eyes doesn't help reinforce that he looks like a Ned Stark clone having dark brown hair and dark gray eyes to hide his Targ ancestry. Some things can't be helped, but others are jist out of laziness in the production sometimes. Shit even the Targaryen's could easily have purple eyes with cgi, several creators have shown its easy and insane a multi-billion dollar company can't simply color their eyes consistently without contacts needing to be used. So we get super inconsistent character features, when events are predicated on said features. Details is a major factor in making this series so great, it's why this series is recieved so spectacularly from "normies" and book fans.

Cato

Yeah can you imagine that you freeze up in your first fight with somebody who has been training for years with the best teachers while you got your training from an old drunk 🙄

Macs

I debated if this is a spoiler or not and I don't think it is, anyone feel free to say otherwise and I'll delete. Ser Arlan just lost his previous squire his nephew in that battle, you see he has a grave dug where he's keeping the horses and kid Dunk plays with his sword. This explains both why he is on a bender getting completely wasted and maybe why he was so quick to jump to Dunks defense even when blind drunk He couldn't defend his nephew and that memory is really fresh, like a day old, so he sees a young lad in trouble like that and he just reacted. Oh and Ser Arlan was singing a dothraki song about moving forward after a tragedy (confirmed by showrunner, you can look up the lyrics) which opens up a whole new set of questions of how does he know dothraki.

SergeTroy

Has a bit more to do with expectations set by the source material. And how dare I voice an opinion contrary to your own, must be a sad day for you to be baited by a comment not even directed your way.

Noho Wank

Micky takes a lot of big swings, but blaming the street girl Rafe for provoking the Gold Cloak who slit her throat has got to be one of his worst takes. I hope he never gets picked for jury duty in a case of police brutality. "Everyone knows cops are violent so they should have just complied and they would have been fine🤪". Garbage take from Micky. I didn't hear him blaming Dunk for getting speared in the leg when he tried to fight back. Was it the puppeteers fault that Aerion broke her fingers too? Don't blame victims bro

PurportedGrey

I don't see that as a spoiler Macs! It's 1. A great detail I completely missed. And 2. Is just an explanation about what's going on from details in the book in relation to what we see can clearly see in the episode.

Matthew H

He wasn't blaming her for what happened. He was just saying that since the guy is already out to get them it would be safer to not do things that draw his attention even more.

Noho Wank

He is kind of blaming her though. The takeaway from the scene is that the gold cloak is a dick and a murderer, so if your reaction is to point out what the victim did wrong then you've missed the point

PurportedGrey

That’s a fair point, Noho, but Micky criticizing a character’s decision isn’t automatically the same as victim-blaming. In fictional stories (and even in some historical moments), people constantly comment on characters making reckless, risky or stupid decisions without implying they’re responsible for the harm done to them or others. For example, when watching the Scream movies, we all call the victims in those movies: stupid or idiots. That’s generally understood as reacting to the character’s judgment, not blaming them for being attacked. There’s an important difference between analyzing/criticizing a character’s choices and assigning moral blame for what happens to them.

Pervy Sage

#SundayRundown I think Prince Baelor was judged by the gods for dishonorable action. He was fighting the Kingsguard even though he knew they couldn't fight him. The Mad Knight asked him about it and Baelor said "the gods will decide". He died because the gods punished him.

Frankie H

That's a really good explainer of who took down who.

Frankie H

You can actually see Prince Baelor take two hits to the back of the head in the background from Maekar right after Aerion quietly yields but before he loudly yells that he yields. Those might be the hits that killed him. Also I love that armor actually works in this show. The armor tanks a lot of hits, which usually doesn't happen in other game of thrones shows.
