The problem with this episode is that it begun the most tired, unfunny Sopranos quote: "He never had the makings of a varsity athlete". I have no idea why this quote is the most popular one from The Sopranos.

Whut! You don’t? It cracks me tf up, lol. Every single time. It’s a callback to a hurtful remark made by Junior in the earlier seasons. Which is now meant to showcase the sad (mental) decline of Junior, in him keeping repeating it. Beautiful.

Livia called this all the way back in season one telling Junior, “I’ve been forgetting things a lot recently. Someday you’ll find it’ll happen to you too.” Even years after her death, she still haunts the narrative. Junior’s actor, Dominic Chianese, spoke about the final scene between Junior and Tony, how, in the script, Junior wasn’t supposed to cry. But the way James Gandolfini delivered the line, “Don’t you love me?” made him break down. Even after all the years since the show ended , Chianese still tears up just thinking about that scene. Junior always loved Tony. He was the son Junior never had, and Tony always looked up to Junior, even subconsciously seeing him as a father figure. It’s unfortunate that they’re in the mob life because it leads to jealousy and insecurity for both of them.

One of my favorite episodes "how bout this humidity"🤌🤌🤌👋👊. The suggestion that tony made during the meeting, please remember it you guys are the only reactors I've seen catch on. Itll come back to bite.

Bob

its so fucking unfunny as are most of the sopranos jokes people repeat. The show is funny but for some reason fans love quoting the unfunny stuff

Jim

I understand the meaning of Juniors comment, I'm referring to all the fans who constantly quote the line. Thats what's annoying and unfunny.

Jamaal Ellison

I don't know if you guys know this or not but Tony never had the makings of a varsity athlete.

It wasn't Bobby who flipped the juror in the convivence store. That was Eugene (member of the Aprile crew.) Bobby did threaten somebody else though. I forget what exactly he did but i'm pretty sure it was something along the lines of trying to get him to switch his vote for a union rep. Something like that.

#SundayRundown Please read Dante Sparada's comment.

#sundayrundown You guys were wondering why Sal was working on Johnny's lawn. That was Tony's way of unfucking what chris fucked up in the meeting.

Responding to what Pat said about Bobby's kids still calling Janice her name instead of mom, that's actually extremely common for healthy families. My step dad has been in my life since I was 10 years old, but my mom made it a point to let us kids know that our real dad was still our "Dad." We could absolutely call our step dad "Dad" if we wanted but it was never forced upon us. I love my step dad more then anything but I will always refer to him as his first name. A lot of families with step parents do the same.

Juniors line about not being a varsity athlete is a call back to the very first scene junior has in. Tony is thinking about there relationship and says how he loves junior but junior has always said hurtful things to him now 5 season later Tony is expressing these feelings to junior but its to late. You guys are right that Tony sees the murder attempt as part of the game but what he fails to see is that the hurtful words are also part of the game. Pre head injury junior would get in Tony's feeling to undermine him in the organization and in negotiations, Junior will bring up his own brothers mental illness to get 5% out of Tony. Tony and junior have been competing so long that junior just naturally undermines Tony now, the same they showed he naturally hates cops

Hank Scorpio

Idk if its necessarily the most popular. "Whatever happened there..." is up there for sure

#SundayRundown, as a response to Chris' (understandable) confusion about Tony and Junior seemingly loving each other, but also attempting to murder eachother at earlier stages of the series: Tony and Junior very much deeply care about eachother. I believe that Tony sincerely believed (up to a point) that Junior is the only living member of his family that he had a semi-loving relationship with (as stubborn as both of them can be). At the same time, the mob world operates on paranoia and perceived threat(s); even from family. Junior's move against Tony wasn't hatred, but was driven by insecurity and losing authority. If you remember, Junior said so to Livia at the time after finding out he was being used as the fall guy: "If this is true, Livia, I have to! Blood or no blood!". And in response, Tony feels the need to respond as a boss. Tony's love does shine through the fact that he still persists on giving Junior chances to come back into his life. The ultimate tragedy being that both feelings are real: deep affection and mob ruthlesness.

to get the full picture of their dynamic, you'd have to remember a lot of the the first season, the show even brought up the varsity athlete remark from the very first episode, but that's going to be hard to remember on a first watch. to your point, the first season did show that junior was the closest thing to a loving parental figure that tony had. his father beats him and wasn't there for him when he went to prison and livia was...well, livia.

Veya

tony and janice are just as trapped in the past as junior, even if it manifests differently for them. the mob connection is a valid point, but beyond that they've also built up reasons for why tony is more forgiving towards junior. in the first season, they established that junior was closest person to a loving parental figure that tony had. tony's father physically beats him and livia emotionally abuses him. junior's words sting because it's the type of abuse that livia used to dole out. in 'down neck' (season 1, episode 7) when melfi was trying to get tony to remember his past regarding his own parents, he thought of junior playing catch with him, unprompted too. it wasn't all positive because the varsity athlete line is a direct callback to the very first episode, where tony said junior made that same hurtful comment in the past, but overall junior had a relatively more loving relationship with tony than either of his parents.

#SundayRundown Feech is played by the late Robert Loggia. He was an amazing character actor with over 200 credits. If you know him from something it's maybe the toy company president in Big that plays the giant keyboard with Tom Hanks, Scarface's boss Lupo that he betrays or the general in Independence Day. He's also the star of this truly bizarre Minute Maid commercial you have to watch: https://youtu.be/aVrGbXcX18c?si=1NC7DnHMDnTWs_fU

For sure! I've rewatched the show several times and I'm still picking up on new themes etc.

In an interview with junior’s actor he said in that final scene when he asked if he loved him he was really about to cry

Jason Mejia

Its been said that there's only 1 episode Carmela isn't in the show im guessing this is it🧐? Also paulie calling feech "the king of bread sticks" they're meeting was in feech's bakery so....

Kwame James

#Sunday rundown just a heads up Tony has a good reason to be fed up with Junior remember he tried to kill him in season one and teamed up with Richie in season two to try to kill him again lol

Dylan Orr

i might be wrong but there's an interview with a group of the cast where the actor who plays Junior says that when tony says "dont you love me?" it made him cry, and he tears up again trying to say that, so im assuming the take we see is his genuine reaction to hearing James's line.
