Which isn’t a lot, but it’s a nice coincidence.

Realistically I know Nikki is probably in prison for life or institutionalized, but my optimistic headcannon is that Nikki is let go and she moves away to deal with her trauma, I just feel bad since she was the victim in all this 😭 Also I thankfully don't have any crazy dating stories, but I did have a guy "friend" who I made in college and once we got close and started hanging out he made a move despite knowing I'm only interested in women and he even met my partner of 8 years. When I asked why he did this, he said my relationship wasn't real... 🫠 What? Lol anyways I never saw him again and this movie was awesome.

Curry Barker, the director, is the one on the phone when Bear calls about altering his wish. He and Cooper Tomlinson (Ian) have a funny Youtube channel called “that’s a bad idea” He’s also made some pretty good horror short films on there.

I’m still irritated that the writer / director stated that Nikki was literally ensorcelled and in the grip of this nebulous thing that wasn’t an entity to itself. There were a number of things that made me feel it was some kind of demon. When she was asking Bear to kill her, and telling him “she” was asleep by example. And when he called the worst customer service ever and talking to Nikki was just an endless scream.

I and a lot of other fans see the Hansel and Gretel scene as a metaphor for Bear and Nikki since it was a dark, incestuous relationship between brother and sister and it was said that Nikki saw Bear as a brother. I’ve seen some takes where you can tell people’s problems are that it was simply from Bear’s perspective, and they would have preferred if it were from Nikki’s. A horror story about a “nice guy” who steals her autonomy vs. the “nice guy” seeing the horrors that come with stealing someone’s autonomy. That’s a completely valid take. But I think the power of this particular story comes from centering Bear as the protagonist. The movie places us in Bear’s shoes because the animus that drives Bear is a prevailing sense of entitlement. Bear doesn’t see anything wrong with his actions because he centers his own satisfaction before someone else’s autonomy. He’s the main character of his own story. Not a mustache twirling villain. Just like we are in real life. Even the villains. There are a lot of people who would feel the same impulses as Bear and find some rationalization to still paint themselves as the good guy. He’s unfortunately very relatable. The movie is a mirror that forces us to contend with our darker impulses, and the horrors that we create.

Chris is correct about the audio. A lot of times, when Nikki is speaking, and you don't see her face, they're dubbing over with a different recording. Also, they purposely shot 2 different versions of the opening scenes with Nikki. One where Navarrette was told to act like she's into Bear, and one where she's not. Then Barker cut between those two different versions, so it's up to interpretation whether or not Nikki liked Bear back.

I don't care how the oscars view the horror genre as a "lesser" acclaimed subgenre; Inde Navarrette deserves a nomination for this performance because she goes absolutely insane, she's one of my standout performances this year in general! The ending is perfect as it is for a horror film because it is so sad and uncomfortable that we just leave the real Nikki there with all of this insanely traumatic shit that just happened without her own will at all!

This movie is absolutely amazing the acting, especially by the two main actors is just phenomenal. Bear was always the villain, it just takes a bit longer to see because he’s an emotionally stunted coward/“nice guy”. He’s the reason the cat died, if he put his grandma’s medicine away properly it wouldn’t have been able to get to it. And he was obsessed with Nikki who seems to be a great friend to him, while he in return only seemed to hang around her to get a chance to sleep with her. His fake confession in the beginning is hallow, as he barely seems to know anything about her while both Ian and Sarah seemed to know about her desire to write and her relationship with her estranged father. Meanwhile Bear must’ve heard at least about her desire to become a writer and he still acts like this is the first time he heard about this. Also IF he was a decent person he could/would’ve just wished for more confidence to ask out Nikki, for her side there wasn’t an attraction… but she might have given him a chance if he came correct.

An interesting fact someone brought up was the fact that the tiggers eye gifted by fake nikki was supposed to represent courage and before bears final moment when he decided not to shoot himself he also puts the tigers eye aside neglecting courage. Which leads to him taking more time to take the pills, giving fake nikki time to use the one wish willow. So bcuz of that the real Nikki would not be able to use the one wish willow to get herself out of the situation further fucking over nikki because of his cowardice

It makes sense to me. It’s not an external entity that came from somewhere else. It’s a version of her personality that’s forced to act in accordance with Bears wish. She refers to it as ‘her’ because it’s not her but at the same time this version of her didn’t exist before the wish, which is kind of important for possession. I interpreted the call as him being able to allow Bear to speak to Nikki in whatever liminal space inside herself that she’s trapped in. At that moment she was just standing in front of the door trapped and unable to do anything until Bear came back so it makes sense to me that she was screaming. I understand that it makes sense intuitively to say she’s possessed but that brings up a lot of other issues that they obviously weren’t interested in exploring.

It was so crazy to be a fan of them before this. I remember seeing the Obsession trailer and being amazed that it came from Thats a Bad Idea. Such a good channel, and of lot of their stuff is on letterboxd.
