It feels like Tony's gambling addiction came outta nowhere.

Dante Sparda

This episode continues last episode’s theme of Tony being disappointed with his father and taking that anger out on father figures in his life, this time it’s Hesh. Tony is even rebelling against the only advice we’ve ever seen Johnny give him: “Don’t become a degenerate gambler”, now he’s like Davey Scatino. Johnny got Tony into this life, and Tony sees no way out of it. It isn’t fulfilling for him anymore, and he has no real sense of purpose, so, as always, he lashes out. Hesh was “up” on Tony, and that bruised his ego so badly that even a decades-long friendship meant nothing to him anymore. The fact that Tony only finally pays Hesh after Hesh’s girlfriend dies, when Hesh is at his lowest, almost feels like a win in Tony’s mind. I’m also not sure I agree with Melfi that Tony is simply chasing the high of winning. Tony is essentially throwing money away through gambling, skipping therapy sessions, and refusing to take the ones he does attend seriously. At the same time, he’s systematically damaging some of the long-term relationships in his life. He goes out of his way to start an incredibly ugly fight with Carmela, damages his friendship with Hesh, not taking care of Vito’s family because of money, and, in the previous episode, Tony even contemplates killing Paulie over what is, at this point, a non-issue. I don’t think Tony is chasing a win; I think he’s chasing rock bottom. He can sense that piano dangling above his head, and subconsciously, I think it’s becoming too much for him to bear. So instead of dealing with everything hanging over him, he’s self-sabotaging and destroying the very things that might keep him from hitting bottom.

-Hesh's girlfriend died of a stroke. It happens. -Pat might not have ever had it happen to him, but some times people die for no reason. It just happens. -Hesh had said that Tony might kill him rather than pay him. The girlfriend dying saved Hesh's life.

Stan the Man

It was clearly set up last week. Tony calls Hesh and goes into the problems he’s been having.

Stan the Man

You nailed the Hesh plot point and why Tony pays him back at the end. That’s exactly it. He even describes it to Carmela that he’s up because HE survived a gun shot. One thing about Melfi, I don’t think she says outright that he is chasing the high, she more puts it to him as a question. Like “what are you after here? The money or the high” and I think that’s an important distinction.

Stan the Man

Sorry but it was NOT directed by David Chase. It was directed by Alan Taylor. It was co-written by Chase. And while I agree it’s nowhere near the bad movie some fans would have you believe, it’s was also disappointing. It so clearly needed to be a mini series. It also went thru major changes in post production and the original script took a HUGE swing that completely changes how you see one specific character. I wish they would’ve kept it. Fans would’ve been outraged but I love that. Sopranos never gave a shit what fans wanted. The movie meanwhile feels like some fan service at times. And, Normies, you gotta stop skipping things because you “hear” it’s bad. Discover it for yourselves. Godfather 3 was brought up this way and you just shouldn’t care about something’s reputation. Because you will miss out on sooo much.

Stan the Man

I don’t know that it saved his life. But it definitely got him paid back faster.

Stan the Man

So in my opinion every episode this season is An “A” or “A+”. Except this episode. This is more “A-“, maybe “B+”. But strap in. Next week is “Walk Like A Man”. Is it next Monday yet?

Robert

The whole episode has people fixated on money, and then one day Hesh’s girlfriend dies, and I think that allowed Hesh and Tony to see what’s more important in the grand scheme of things

After finishing the Sopranos, you all should remain in the same vein and watch either Fargo, Power, or Boardwalk Empire

Y'all need to stop with the bullshit engagement-bait ass titles. It makes you look amateurish

Adam Vialpando

Hesh maybe, but not Tony. Look at his face when he leaves Hesh's house at the end. He doesn't care. He just decided to pay when Hesh was at his lowest to feel like HE was the one on top now.

Erik D

I think it's both that he can pay Hesh, now that he's in a position of dominance, and that he feels bad and can only show love through material things.

#sundayrundown this episode is without a doubt the episode I hate rewatching the most. Its the worst episode of the entire show because it showcases every bad trait if Tony's front and center without any if his redeeming qualities. Its perfect for establishing the feeling we should have for tony going into the final stretch of the show but horrible to watch.

Paul T Hewes

the crew was already talking about not paying Hesh and killing him instead. He might not have been intending to kill Hesh before she died, but it ended him even considering it.

Stan the Man

Uh. What? Worst episode? Redeeming qualities? Tony kills people. He’s a murderer. A user. He’s abused women. This episode is doing exactly what it should be doing, which is reminding you that you are watching a piece of shit person.

Sopranos deadass one of the very few shows that didn't have a bad final season. Amazing from season 1 till the finish.

Javi

I already expected it from you guys but I'm so glad you turned down a sponsorship from those vile prediction markets

it bears repeating, but tony's gambling here is implicitly linked to his frustration with his own father. he spent last episode on the run because of his very first murder that his father made him do and now in this episode he's doing the exact thing that his father has explicitly warned him against (we got a flashback to this back in season 3). similar to last episode where he lashes out at paulie, he's lashing out at hesh now, both are links to his father in the past. he tries to help vito jr. in a sloppy manner, but his own father issues ended up stopping him from being a little effective even then. the scene between tony and carmela near end of the episode was amazing and it encapsulated a lot running ideas that have been present throughout the season.

Veya

great comment in general, and your last sentence touches on something that's very core to the show. his relationships were always part of what grounded him (the lyrics of the ending song of the very first episode is "the beast in me is caged by frail and fragile bars"), and he's finally hitting a point where he seems to be spiraling out of control to the point that a number of his relationships don't really tether him to any decency anymore. paulie was someone he never really liked anyways, but he has only ever had a positive relationship with hesh. i don't think i even remember a bad interaction between them before this episode. it really goes to show how much his downward spiral is escalating, even episode by episode. and the show also does a great job, like you have said, of thematically linking it to his father, and knowing what comes up in the coming episodes, it is not done with that theme.

#SundayRundown Haven't seen Deadwood mentioned in the comments as a replacement for a bit. I'm really hoping this is the next show for you. I think it's short episode run will be a nice palette cleanser after a long show. Content wise the program is just top-tier. One of the most staggering collections of talented character actors that I can recall. The look of the show is fantastic as well with it accurately capturing the look of the time. I also feel like it's a genre underrepresented on the channel & will help broaden your horizons in a big way.

Hank Scorpio

They watched the first episode of Fargo years ago but never picked it up. Idk if they've seen it off camera but Fargo is definitely something I would add to the list of Sopranos replacements.

John

We also know Tony can change his mind regardless of having the best intentions, depending on circumstance. I.e, the 100k for vito’s wife. Think that tells us Hesh was likely to get killed if things kept going against Tony financially. Maybe that’s part of the reason he paid hesh when he did too, because the Vito thing made him realise he may well kill him in future if he didn’t.
