I'm not excusing Carol, because I totally agree what she said to Lizzie was terrible. However, I think also important not to overlook Carol's own trauma coming into play here. She isn't being that harsh because she was an abused woman who had to learn to be tough; she's being that harsh because she is a grieving mother. To her, the ends justify the means, because it is more important that the children learn to protect themselves, learn to survive, learn not to 'be weak', than to respect Rick's 'farmer' ways or the parents' decisions. She's seen how Rick was stopping Carl from using guns, and believed he would do the same for the rest of the kids re. weapons. She has two sweet little blonde girls looking to her for survival, and her mind is full of the 'should haves' and 'what ifs' that could have kept her own sweet, little blonde girl alive. I think the tough love is coming from a place of wanting to erect a barrier to protect her own heart, plus a desperate need to give these children every chance of surviving a harsh new world.

Being that they are in a jail and sleeping in cells, even tho its secure, I would always be worried someone on the inside might die, every night I went to bed! Take advantage of your cell and close the bars, they dont have to be locked, just slide them closed when you sleep, something tells me walkers aren't opening them!

Korivex

I don't think Rick thought they were safe and he could just hang out... I think he was trying to center himself and to teach Carl more than just being a survivor and killer. He knew if they didn't reign it in a bit that they would become 'too far gone'.

I have never understood why they never close the cell doors at night, even Daryl says “I ain’t sleeping in a cage” WHY????? Literally thousands of zombies could storm the cell block and no matter how many pushed or pulled against those cell doors, it wouldn’t fall. Even if it took DAYS to stab them from the cells you would be perfectly safe. You could even take naps! 🤣. Store a weapon or two in your personal cell along with some bottles of water and some snacks. In the event that zombies breach, close the cell doors. Am I missing something important? I guess the only thing I can see wrong with that thinking is if the cell doors won’t latch at all without someone actually turning the key maybe?

Vamwolf 77

I'm kind of on Carol's side with teaching the kids even without asking their parents. These are Woodbury people after all, and all they've ever done is "ignore it and it'll go away." They won't even close cell doors. Remember, Karen didn't want her son to get weapons training because he had asthma. That's kind of like not teaching your kids to swim so they'll never fall in the water. Even now they live in denial. But Carol knows firsthand what happens to kids who can't defend themselves. I don't blame her at all. Also, am I wrong in thinking that "Look at the flowers and count 1,2,3" sounds like something a therapist would teach a child who regularly has some kind of episode (anxiety attacks or similar) as a calming mechanism?

I watched this show for the first time at 12yo and now that i rewatch it with you at 20, I find it crazy how when you’re young you don’t have the ability to understand or process such tragedy, happening simultaneously, all the time, without time to relax. Like i remember being 12 and not being that much affected by it, now with the maturity i have now it’s really really hard to watch. I can’t imagine an apocalypse happening irl, it would be horrible. The scene with michonne holding judith is one of the most beautiful and pure scenes in the show for me. Also I feel so bad for Rick, he felt so optimistic in the beginning of the episode only for him to be left hopeless in the end of it. There’s good coming out tho Tom, don’t worry :)

Jesse James

I've seen up to season 7 and no spoilers just wanna say that Daryl might be my favorite character in the entire series. He may not be the most emotional but he's very loyal, smart, and a fighter. I've heard what other people on the internet say about the rest of the show and I don't know, Daryl doesn't seem "toppable".

Jesse James

Not really. What I described about him here you and everyone else has already seen of Daryl from this episode and previous episodes.

courtney 🧚🏽‍♀️

i agree. you have to be harsh there is no time for niceness in this world bc that can ultimately get you killed. if you’re a sensitive person in this world you will not survive end of story.

courtney 🧚🏽‍♀️

facts! as security just in case they should shut the doors at night bc everyone is most vulnerable when they’re asleep and someone could die from a heart attack or aneurysm so better to be safe than sorry.

Gracie's Revenge

Carol is being a bit 'overkill' with how tough she's being on the girls, and all the kids, because she really cares and I think she is desperate to prevent what happened to Sophia from happening again. What happened with Sophia came out of nowhere, and Sophia was a gentle, weaker child and it got her killed. I think Carol just wants to make all the kids as ready as they can be for something, because you just don't know when something is going to happen. I understand what you are saying though Tom. Carol has hardened and has become very matter-of-fact and get-things-done, and I think that world would make a lot of people that way. I think she cares more about keeping people safe than she does about keeping them coddled/comforted. (Now Rick is currently different. He's stepped away from anything and everything violent and pulled Carl back too in an attempt to preserve Carl's innocence, what's left of it. But he may be going too far in that direction too. It's like right now Rick and Carol have good ideas, they are just struggling to implement them in a good and balanced way.)

Luke Fitton

I love how emotionally intelligent Beth is now. Such great Development since Season 2.

David Guerrero

I have the same issue with Daryl as I do with Mat Damon in Goodwill Hunting. He is written too perfect. Just one cool dude that just happens to check all the boxes, but he is also a rebel but also not. He shows no emotion but then shows emotion at right moments. The "flaws" they give him are just to build fabricated drama to give a pointless resolution. Also, what I think what Lab means by spoiler, that you mentioned he is still alive in season 7.

David Guerrero

Oh Tom, that thing with everyone can hear in the cell blocks you probably didn't grow up poor but there are ways to do your business in silence if you know what I mean.

Amy J

Look at the flowers Lizzie 🥺

Amy J

I love Carl's character growth too, he is becoming a surprisingly grounded and caring young man

Natalie

Ur gonna be stuck there for a really long time in a 4x4 room and even if the zombies breach you are not safe, that door WILL eventually give, they’ll keep coming no matter how many you kill, and good luck napping whilst hearing the moans of the dead, you’d probably go crazy and let yourself get bit 0_0

Fatal N Felony

i mean covid stays in the back of my mind still when someone coughs

Virginia Harp

Since when is Daryl not emotional? Hes one of the most emotional characters in the show. Thats what endears him to people.

Reaction Therapy

I totally hear this and agree with the intention, I can’t remember but think I spoke about it in the moment….that helping children be cautious, aware, and capable of defending themselves is critical, however understanding a child’s brain and how core beliefs can completely change them is important…so for me it was more in the delivery of shame vs empowerment 👍

Reaction Therapy

Yep, makes total sense to me, it’s the most secure they can be! I agree One of my biggest hangups is the bathroom! They never talk about the bathroom!! How do they go and where do they go??😳😳🫣🫣

Reaction Therapy

Yep, they need to know what kind of world they live in now for sure👍

Jesse James

Unresolved trauma does a lot to you including showing little to no emotions, because displaying vulnerability and if you feel on guard which is what trauma does you wouldn't wanna be vulnerable. Up to the season we're all watching together, it's obvious that Daryl's shields are coming down as he feels more comfortable with his people. This message was longer, I've decided to remove what it said to remove any possible spoilers that I don't think are but (shrug).

Elliot

Did anyone else think they didnt need to kill the pigs. The walkers were following them just fine. Couldve just led them away.

KaosDragon

Hi Tom!! i just joined your Patreon, for these unedited reactions, and i can't wait to watch them all!!! As someone who really loves The Walking Dead, i really hope you continue watching the series, even if some fans say they have personally stopped watching at a certain point! Those who say "to stop at a certain point and stop watching" i highly disagree with and love The Walking Dead in its entirety, and hopefully you will too!! So far, I'm on your season 2 video reactions and i think your love for this show will only continue to grow and hopefully you will want to continue it!!!

It'll forever infuriate me that security measures for the potential random deaths of perfectly healthy (and also unhealthy) people weren't taken IN A PRISON WITH FUNCTIONAL CELL DOORS! I don't give a fuck how unlikely it'll be for someone to have a random heart attack or brain aneurysm, if I were on the council I would've advocated for the rule of, "Every single door in the whole cell block, including personal cells, must be closed at night." along with having certain doors in the cell locked, like the outside doors directly leading into the portion of the cell block where the actual prison cells are, for example. I also agree that someone should've HEARD poor dead Patrick stumbling his way back into the cell block from the bathroom. Also eating that poor sleeping dude, that would've been loud AF too. Even if I were 'safe' in a prison during an apocalypse I would still be a very light sleeper. You telling me no one, absolutely no one, has sleeping problems and/or aren't light sleepers as a result of survival vigilance?

Gracie's Revenge

Rick did that because they think that the infection spreading may've come from the pigs. Hershel even says at one point "we need to do something about those hogs". They weren't going to be able to risk eating those ones, so using them to lead the walkers away at that point killed two birds with one stone.

Elliot

Carol couldve used sick people too haha.

Juhoe

Michonne with Judith and rick having to kill the pigs breaks my heart everytime

Mami's Gatos

Carol saw a glimpse of Sophia in lizzie and doesnt want her to end up dead like her daughter but she was out of line. Give the kid sone time to grieve.

Wolfy! Wolfi! Wolfé!

Second episode you had climbing walkers and then it was dropped for a long time after Frank Darabont was taken off the show. The imagery with the little pigs is so sad and beautiful...him seeing the death of his dream if just being a farmer. I also love the imagery of Lizzy taking Carol's hand, the flower and Carol smiling and sorrow....it's that moment she makes THE decision. I disagree btw, the kids should learn no matter what and Carol doesn't want to take the risk because Rick won't lay down the law with them learning how to defend themselves like he wanted Carl to learn. I think Carol is in the right with that decision whereas Rick is in the wrong not enforcing that with all the kids including Carl. It would have been a great scene and made sense stories wise if one of the kids saved themselves in the attack or saved someone else. And then it gets exposed and the parents know she taught them but it saved their life. I think it would have made better story and moral quandry for that secret to be discovered and that point and debated at least a little. There is something you are missing though and I hope someone else pointed it out to you but just in case - Nick wasn't her dad, Nick was a random walker with a name tag and she was crying saying Nick was special and no he is dead. Then Carol says 'you aren't upset about that walker you are upset over your dad' Mica tries to correct Carol that her sister isn't weak she messed up - meaning Lizzy is messed up when it comes to walkers and she was really crying over Nick. It's a very important moment that I hope someone was able to clarify for you. I love your reactions, even when I disagree I love seeing your take on it. Have a wonderful day and please don't stress over those commenters on YouTube. PS the burning of his shirt at the end...the last piece of his Police Uniform

Demceez

I really don't get why they haven't or do not build a 12foot ditch all around the prison.. extra protection from the walkers. That would be like the first thing I'd suggest if I was there.

Gracie's Revenge

Ya, nobody thinks of a good old-fashioned medieval moat. You don't even have to fill them with water. But it would make it harder for walkers AND people to get to you. The prison really could've been built up over the years into a more modernish medieval 'castle' or fortress of sorts.
