Everyone always asks, "What's your basic formula for taking nightscapes or Milky Way astro-landscapes?" Here's the exposure I usually start out with. It will give you a great starting image.

Now, that image is going to be far from perfect. As a single exposure, it's going to have some star trailing (star movement) issues and noise problems; but it's going to get you in the "ballpark" and quickly let you know the potential of your composition. If you like the composition, you can refine the image with techniques that I'm added in later chapters.

PDF: Be sure to download (below) and view this latest version 2.0 eBook update about my basic NightScape exposure starting point. The above photo (click to enlarge) and the image that is used as a background for this page update is a single exposure, taken with that same formula. I think you'll be surprised at how good it turned out. It was taken with a camera and lens that are over ten years old — proving that "simple" can often deliver amazing results.

NOTE: My patrons can expect to see many more posts over the next few months, as I continue to "serialize" updates to my original, version 1.1 "Milky Way NightScapes" eBook. These advance updates will become available exclusively to my patrons, page-by-page, until my new version 2.0 eBook is completed and published sometime in mid to late 2023.
