Really interesting to learn about the whole concept of stageism - makes me look at the prime directive in Star Trek in a very different light too… Science / empirical exploration was such a tool of imperialism as well, with the violence being justified by “discovering” new plants / animals / resources which was (is!) painted as morally good or at least morally neutral because it’s for the sake of scientific progress and therefore “objective”. This is such a powerful way to contextualise / analyse sci-fi - really enjoying this video.

The thumbnail looks like AI, can you address this?

Verity Ritchie

(I know it probably doesn't look like I put a lot of effort into the thumbnails, but I do. I did study design, and even if they look simple, the process of making them wasn't, and testing them on youtube is a whole other thing. Also if you want evidence that I am an artist, scroll down on my insta.)

Thanks Karoliina! Yeah it really is interesting to think of in the context of Star Trek!

Having not seen the episode, you did a good job laying everything out so that it all made sense anyway! (I didn't want to put my real name for use everywhere on here but you can call me Gwen :-) What I have just means 'windy wind' in Irish and Welsh.

Same here. I always thought that the prime directive was an aspirational viewpoint, we have a duty not to expand were it would be detrimental, however it really leans into stageism. It's such a reccurent theme in sci-fi; some genius or alien gives us a clean energy source or technological advancement and it's used only for terrorism or war. So, progress from it being a racist sentiment to being applicable to everyone I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wonder how much the increase in anti intellectualism of the right & return to mainstream unapologetic fascism is going cause a great focus on stageism in our scifi

Exactly the same for me - I’ve been completely uncritical of the prime directive until now (& have accepted Federation propaganda at face value, I suppose!). You’re right, it’s so embedded in sci-fi in general. It’s useful to have a word for it to start notice it more now & pay attention to what writers do with that…

Really well put together as always. Got to the heart of what made this episode so... off.

Dihuh

I finally got around to joining your patreon after watching this video! I've been really enjoying your analysis, and I always appreciate the seriousness you have for the larger issues while also maintaining a funny charm and wit. Looking forward to the next one!

Hi! Great video! I would love to start watching Doctor Who, but I am not sure I would enjoy the old series (before 2000) and I would most definitely not enjoy Moffets era, do you have recomandation in which order to watch? Or maybe what series to watch and what to skip as it is either blend or boring or whatever? I saw Dot and Bubble and it was great😍 Your expertize would be most appreciated🤍🤣😁

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Slávek! Start with the 2005 series one, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, and watch through all of David Tennant's era! Then the 2023 60th anniversay specials for sure, and you may like the 2024 and 2025 episodes if you liked Dot and Bubble!

Great! Thanks a lot, will do! Looking forward to it😁 have a great day!!!!
