Ghosts And You Might Die

I’m in airports and on airplanes all day so will have to wait to watch it, lest I unleash my own “Harold, they’re LESBIANS” moment 😅

OMG! THANK you! Confess you had me at the start there... I was like - if it's supposed to be so amazing, why did bits of it make me feel icky?... and then you explained it all so clearly! Side note - not seen the English version(s), I went to school and was in the same year as (and have therefore acted on stage with) Sally Hawkins. 😁

That was great stuff, though I probably need to (ahem) “interrogate” my enthusiasm for watching this so soon after it dropped 😳 I hadn’t seen the Blue movie (you see what I did there) but read the graphic novel some years ago, and it’s striking how very different the *energy* of the sex scenes in the book is, compared with the film. Regarding both nakedness vs nudity and the male gaze, another recentish lesbian-centred movie which comes to mind is Disobedience. Rachel McAdams is seen *naked* several times, but only in the context of either being alone or when with her husband – communicating vulnerability rather than display for the audience. When she and Rachel Weisz eventually have sex, the scene is strikingly un-male-gazy, with both women remaining largely clothed. The problem that all these films struggle to get away, though, from is summarised nicely in this comment from Disobedience’s author, Naomi Alderman, on how the novel was received: “I thought I’d written a book about faith, but it turned out that I’d written a book about lesbians.”

This is great! I adore Ways of Seeing and I was so excited to see you all apply that analysis to these films! I enjoyed the Handmaiden but the way he changed the ending felt off to me (even aside from the male-gazey sex scene, though after watching this, I think that's definitely part of it). The Handmaiden ending feels very "girl power" if you know what I mean. And it makes me miss the heartbreak and betrayal and reconciliation of the original story.

Miško is on the desk, sorry! Thank you, Math! I agree about the "girl power" feel of the ending. I think the third act of the film really just wanders about almost aimlessly.

Amazing! 💞💞💞 Please tell Miško I am honored to receive such an exuberant reply!

Lol I was wondering what the string of letters and numbers meant, and when I clicked "load more comments" I was very satisfied with the answer to that mystery. (Reminds me of a time that my cat did some typing of his own, and when he stepped off my keyboard the document I had open said "poooooooo" hehe)

Excellent analysis as ever. This channel is so important, seriously.
