Homonationalism is such an important concept. i've been aware of it creeping into how people talk bout the Gay Games is coming here to Hong kong but i didn't have a word for it till i watched this vid!

Great video! Just the fact that Romania wasn't mentioned at all speaks very deeply on all levels on the blandness of the acts that are usually selected. Very much plays into 'respectability' things.

To be fair, we showed a clip from wrs' Llámame with the bisexual dancing from last year! Also a clip from the unforgettable 2013 entry! There are so many countries we didn't mention at all and it mostly just came down to the question of who has hosted in the last decade or so, to be honest

Oh, I wasn't complaining! I just used to cover the show for the newspaper and I'm still bitter about it and how the sausage is made and all that :/

Fantastic video! You could tell this was very well researched. I'm gonna have to watch it again. And it also hit very close to home, as an Israeli. You're bang on about everything you said regarding the occupation. A few more bits of information: 1. The government really wanted the 2019 Eurovision to be hosted in Jerusalem. Apart from the political aspect, Jerusalem simply did not have a venue that matched the EBU's requirement in terms of crowd size. Plus, city hall would not allow the desecration of the Sabbath (no work is allowed between Friday evening to Saturday evening). It was never gonna happen in Jerusalem anyway. 2. The pink washing Israel is going through is insane. Gay marriage is not allowed here. Trans people are being persecuted. Every administration (apart from the previous one which lasted about a year) has been a right-wing religious coalition. The one we have now is by far the worst we've ever had - both in terms of their views and in terms of their size. Taking inspiration from Hungary and Poland, the government drafts new laws restricting queer life every day, and they're slated to pass unopposed. In addition, the government is trying to abolish the judicial branch, which will further allow exclusion of queer people from public life. We are fighting for our fledgling democracy every day by holding massive demonstrations and various acts of civil unrest. With all that going on, the government is still happy to brand Tel Aviv as this queer haven (which it is) for that sweet sweet gay money. On the national level, though, we are the first to be targeted by this horrific government.

2026-09-14 11:00 I've been subbed to you on YouTube for a while now but this video was the one that made me come here and sub to your Patreon :) So informative!! And, as others have mentioned, so nice to have left leaning, LGBTQ analysis/critique of Eurovision. Thank you, and please make this an annual thing if you can - honestly, after watching this video I felt so much more invested in this year's competition, being more aware of the politics at play. Even the flashback to Niamh Kavanagh beating Sonia in 1993 made me remember what a huge moment in redefining Irish national identity that was, one that I feel helped bring about the Celtic Tiger economic boom in my home country. As for Wogan and Norton on the BBC though... I shall air my ire in another comment.
