can we have access to this in RSS feed as well? i love listening to my podcasts all in the same place and want to add this <3

This was absolutely delightful. Cassandra was one of the characters that stuck with me in DW years after watching. I still say "moisturise me" when I do my skincare. I love "hag" characters and I've realised how many of my favourite villains down through the years have followed the trope. Grunhilde from Banjo Kazooie, the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus, Mother Gothel (now that I think about it, it's a massive theme in Disney villains in particular). On good representation, I've seen more and more people use media consumption as a stand in for being a good person or having good politics. There seems to be a massive rise in calls for censorship under the guise of "good representation." I've also seen a lot of people use "good representation" as an excuse for why their preferences are inherently better than others to the point people search for excuses to say something is problematic so they can trash it. What's "good representation" and what's "bad representation" seems to come down to what they personally like/dislike. People also seem to be increasingly uncomfortable about sex in particular, and hold depictions of sex to different standards than something like violence. There's an expectation that if you enjoy a story with sex, you condone all of the behaviour that's portrayed in that story, but the same doesn't apply to violence. Personally I find all of this quite suffocating, as all discussion of the themes or characterisation of the text gets pushed aside to only discuss whether the text is morally good or bad. I think this is partially because people don't have anything meaningful to contribute in those areas, but they can feel like the authority on whether it passes their personal Hayes code. I feel much more represented by Cassandra than I do any of the characters of heartstopper. She's an exaggeration of feelings of insecurity many women experience and it makes her very relatable. I will always be drawn to characters like that over sanitised bisexual characters written to be walking PSAs.

Who were the potentially queer characters in the classic series? Who was the first one?

Verity Ritchie

I don't know about a "first" one, because its all a bit complicated and subtextual. There's a cross-gender brain swap with Peri in "Mindwarp". Dr Judson is meant to be Alan Turing in "The Curse of Fenric" and Ace was written with lesbian subtext for "Survival." Mike Yates asks the Brig to dance with him in "The Daemons." The Sarah Jane Adventures and Tales of the TARDIS have implied that Tegan and Nyssa are a couple. I don't think any of it is really fair to call canon in the classic series, its very much open to interpretation.

Verity Ritchie

I...have no idea how to do that 😅 I'll look into it and we'll see

Michi

I would love podcast eps about Torchwood

MathClassWarfare

I love everything about this beautiful podcast

Tass

never enough dr who content 😁😁 second the torchwood podcast idea!!

case deerly

yes!!! thank you!!! i can’t wait to listen!!

Niamh

Re: the pressures to be beautiful on YouTube, I know a single comment can't take that anyway or anything but fwiw: I love a themed look for a video, love when YouTubers are clearly having fun with it, but I also think you underestimate how inherently compelling you are. You're going to get the odd comment no matter what you do - literally everyone gets comments on their appearance, but I genuinely don't think that any fewer people would watch your videos or be any less interested in what you have to say if you stopped wearing makeup or looking as glamorous in them. And I don't think any explanation or consistency is necessary. Many YouTubers dress up for some videos and not others, and have some videos that are highly scripted and produced and some that are more casual and rambling and generally people are just happy for more content from their faves.

i've been saying the same thing about how there are obviously going to be disappointments with new-rtd doctor who drops because that's how it works when you hype something up so much, and i do worry that will change how people (tumblr) looks at 2005 doctor who. i think generally i trust him as a writer and i feel comfortable with where it seems to be going especially because it's been clear since like, the writer's tale, he's been wanting to write queer doctor who forever. (but there is a spoiler rumor i'm a bit worried about, so i guess we will all have to see.)

Verity Ritchie

Thank you, Niamh! I definitely get in my own head a bit too much worrying about what other people will think. It's a very strange pressure being watched by so many people I can't even make sense of it. But you're right in that if I worry less and just try to have fun everything tends to work out!

Verity Ritchie

I have no idea what to expect from the new stuff! But what I do think is that...I don't want to read anything anyone on social media has to say about it! I saw people in youtube comments having meltdowns about the new portrayal of Davros, which was all very silly. So I think when the show starts up, honestly, I will just ignore social media!

Calypso

Cassandra is also one of my favorite doctor who's villian ! It was a great podcast, thank you Verity

El

So keen to hear your thoughts on this latest special and its handling of representation

Verity Ritchie

So many thoughts, but I want to take some time to let them simmer and also see the other two parts! But I will say for now, the episode was a blast, had so much fun! Watched with a friend who had never seen the show before and he thought it was great fun, which is the true test!

Ruxandra Grecu

Sorry to be late with this!!!! There's never enough Dr. Who content from you, IMO! This was very fun and am excited to listen to the next episode as well! When it comes to bi rep, I am happy with Captain Jack, I am soooo okay with happy go lucky slutty bisexuals who are full of enthusiasm and who kiss everybody, IDGAF anymore about this stereotype (I'm a non-monogamous bi, so I have zero fucks left to give for people's opinions).

Ruxandra Grecu

pressed Enter too soon! I also got misty-eyed at the end of Cassandra's second episode, it just got to me. Hearing you talk about Legends of Tomorrow.... it would be a fucking dream to hear more of that, because I just really love that fucking ridiculous show and its bisexuals so... maybe another podcast idea? Still working, so on to the other podcast, playing catchup now.

Aoife

Honestly I could listen to you talk about Doctor Who forever! I very much would love to hear your thoughts on the 60th anniversary specials.

Aoife

Glad to hear it!

I would love a Torchwood list of watchable episodes as well as maybe a favorite episode watch podcast❤️ Loved this

Marrim

“my validity in the world is largely depend on whether or not i look alright” damn. that summed up the pressure put on feminine people SO well. felt it in my soul.

Marrim

also I’ve never watched Dr. Who and i still enjoy your content about it. i really appreciate that you give context and backstory for those of us not in the know 😅

Taru Mäkelä

I don't watch dr who but was super interested in everything here! Went to watch a bunch of cassandra content after finishing this. The ultimate diva ❤️

Verity Ritchie

There will be a bit about her in the new video too!

Nadi

I found it really interesting to hear your perspective on beauty expectations as a transfeminine non-binary individual. I'm on the other direction, so to speak: AFAB genderfluid and also naturally fitting into feminine beauty standards. My experiences are vastly different because of that. I find that, the more I experience and get comfortable with my gender expression, the less I care about how others might perceive my appearance in terms of traditional beauty. I find myself way more focused on causing confusion or looking more masculine than on whether strangers think I'm attractive or not. Good on you for causing confusion btw, goals af.
