New video today! I appreciate all the feedback from the early-access folks over the past couple days. And thanks go to Andrew Morozko for suggesting an improved title for the video.

Also, Howard Grigg suggested perhaps releasing videos like this as a series of shorter videos. It seems a few other people liked his suggestion. But I've also heard positive feedback about longer videos. I'd love to hear more thoughts from you all on video length. What do you think?

When I'm channel surfing YouTube I tend to avoid long videos because if I wanted to spend 30, 60 or 120 minutes watching TV I'd be on Netflix or Amazon.

Peter Metzger

I generally prefer somewhat shorter videos because when I go back for reference it helps me find the topic or section I was looking for. That said, I've watched plenty of lengthy videos in the past too :)

Nothing wrong with a long video as long as it is well organized and well edited, as yours are. Peter has a good point about being able to find specific items when referring back to a longer video. Including an index with headings and time stamps in the text section can address that. Personally, I think thirty to forty-five minutes is comfortable. An hour is fine. Longer than an hour becomes difficult.

As I began watching, I had the exact same thought - "you know, a list of highlights with timestamps in the description would be equally helpful." I paused to comment and saw you had reached the same conclusion!

For me it is about the content, not the length. I prefer for all videos to be as long as possible specifically to support the content.. However, I have found lately that a "Video Series" done up in a playlist has been beneficial for the same reasons for me.... ^-- For that and a few other reasons; i believe it would be best to adopt the approach of "is it going to be 1.5 hours or less from start to scratch on a single project" and if so then go for 1 long video with highlights (time stamps) in the description......... if it's going to be >1.5 hours then consider if it would be best to still do it as a single long video because it's just a few minutes or an hour more; or if it would be better "for the content of what you are trying to teach" to put it in multiple videos in a single Series Playlist. p.s. I fully believe your style of teaching to be one of the best teaching methods of all time, thank so much for every single bit of your efforts ( i don't mean that as a pun btw, i'm seriously learning soo much ) :-)

I have no problem with long videos as long as they are well edited (as Jack pointed). I also would love timestamps. It would help me for later reference when I'm at my garage replicating what you did. I would be super ok with you splitting a video in 2 or 3 parts - but that might not be a popular option given that patreons pay per video, iirc. But in my oppinion: if you make 3 short videos you get paid for each video. If you make a longer 1hr one, it feels unfair to be paid the same amout for maybe 3 times the work. Personally I do not resonate that much with what Phil said (I'm not saying he's wrong - I'm super ok with people seing things differently). I for one, do not put your videos in the same box as netflix content. Your videos for me are "study time" or "research". I am genuinely humbled when someone puts out information for ME (and for others) so that I can learn and grow. I will invest my time (however long it would take) if the subject is interesting. The teacher is the one who knows best how to organize his content. Thanks for everything!

I like and enjoy the format of your videos. There is no distracting EDM in the background, it makes it that much easier to follow and absorb new information. Everything is clear and concise, and you show the reasons why something might not work as expected. Taking the time to explain why a clock line is needed to keep a message from getting corrupted just puts you in a whole tier above so many others. For me, I do not have a problem with the length of the videos. The time it takes to lay out the tutorial on paper, maybe a script (I know I'll be needing one), all the setup and logistics to record the content and screen captures, then edit it and upload to Patreon and Youtube, that can take many hours of work to be a creator. People don't think about it taking 8+hrs of work to make like a 15min QUALITY YT tutorial. I don't have a problem with $2/30 min quality videos on a subject. If your video can give me a better perspective on my own electronics problems, then it's all worth the patronage for me.

I really liked this video, in fact it got me to support you on Patreon.

I saw this video on Hackaday, and watched it all the way through. The quality of the video stood out to me: you cover this topic about a well as my college professor did from a technical perspective, and definitely exceed on the polish and aesthetics. And I pay $50 - $100 for an hour of lecture, so small payment supporting you was a no-brainer.
