I know you guys have been wanting an aluminum boat. This is super exciting! And excited to follow you and this adventure!

Paul Hegreness

Just watched the video love the excitement! Go for it!

Distant Shores TV

Wow it looks great guys! Welcome to the aluminum boat club :-)

Thanks guys! I have been absolutely loving your video series on your build and have learned so much. Hope all is well! Brian

George Schreck

What an amazing journey it has been with Delos! I am excited to see where all of this takes you and maybe Sierra can even have a hull to herself 😂😂 Big hugs and have fun with the journey! We will be here impatiently awaiting with excitement! ❤️

Thanks Paul, we are so stoked and feel so fortunate enough to be able to consider this in the first place. You are correct, we have wanted an aluminum boat for a long time and see a lot of benefits. More to come, we were just so excited we wanted to share this right away!

Michael and Phyllis Selby

Are there other aluminum cats on the market? I love the idea of an adventure cat. The forward helm makes a lot of sense. With all the extra space maybe you can put in a pickleball court and a 9 hole miniature golf course. Thanks for letting us in on the beginning of Delos 2.0!

Distant Shores TV

Yes it's going great! We are just now flying back to Canada from NL after a short visit. She will be launching in late March/April (of this year😂 coming soon. Good luck with your decisions !! Paul & Sheryl

Sean Martin

Your sailing experiences will lead to some amazing design decisions, I can't wait to see how this turns out! My two cents: let the pros build it to spec, the experience you are gaining right now will make sure you remain extremely skilled boat repair experts. You can take long breaks in Sweden, and bring Mormor down for the christening.

Jeff Fischer

It would be cool to include some sort of underwater viewing/filming window. With lights.

Bill Dapp

I remember Brian and Brady talking about Delos 2.0 years ago. I remember Brady saying that Delos 2.0 has to have a pizza oven. So yeah, I'm not surprised in the least. Go for it I say! You only live once and Sierra (and both of you) deserve the best! I look forward to the build process whenever that starts.

Spencer Norby

Ahhh! I thought the sudden (to us) visit to Australia was a bit of a wild card. I know you were talking about an expedition boat quite a while ago. I also recall Expedition Drenched getting one shortly after you were talking about it. Not that you are probably thinking of sailing with seven people aboard again, but the CAT kind of space would certainly make a good-sized working crew much easier to bring aboard. Wow, the saloon on the CAT looks like half of Delos. Guessing three full cabins and wow. That's lots of folks. Gee, even room for another little Trautman. Isn't it weird that you can have more room and comfort and at the same time have a faster boat? Speaking of which I presume you already know all about La Vagabonde and their speed machine. Just looking at pictures of it scares me. (I am 70 now). That is really the rudder structure you designer is putting on those CATS. It certainly is no Bahamas Hopper. You mentioned "High Latitudes" again. The series on the Svalbard Expedition was amazing. It would be wonderful seeing more expeditions like that. I've written enough. You probably have a hundred excited patrons also writing. So, again, WOW! The secret through is kept. Oh, it was 15° F earlier today here. Blessings of peace, love and joy be with you all. Spencer aboard Vin Vitae, Tacoma, Washington.

Scott C. Wise

I'm depressed. A cat? Please say no. Distant Shores is doing it right. Aluminum Monohull Exhibition Sailboat. They have been around forever - even before you guys - and they have gone with a monohull. I wonder why?

Rick Doner

With kiddo getting older, and bigger, now, I think it makes perfect sense.

Alex

Whhhaaaaat. Awesome!! Sounds like a great idea.

Bassman

Whatttttt 2.0? YES!!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126938784

Probably the most similar would be the Garcia Explorocat, although I think it's a tad heavy and deep compared to this design. Most of the other ones like the Mumby focus on being super light and fast. But this would be a bit of a different beast and different focus. Ha ha and maybe an outside galley as well :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>126938859

Hey Sean, we can't wait to see either! Yes, there are a lot of benefits to building with a pro. I could learn an incredible amount and use my systems experience to make sure that some of the same mistakes that are made in typical production boats are not made here. And yes, Mormor could come to visit and we could still head to Sweden for visits... We will see!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126938930

Ha ha yes I remember that too. Thanks for your support and kind words Bill. We'll let you know as we figure it out!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126939176

Yeah, she would be built to take a pounding with the protected prop and rudder. Draft would be about 1.2m with perf characteristics somewhere around a similar sized Catana if you go by the hull shape, weight, and sail plan. Around 15 tons for 16 meters is not too bad! Stay warm my friend and we'll let you know as our plans progress.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126939210

Hey Scott! Well, I think change is good :). It helps you to learn, to grow, to think of things in different ways. I have watched the Distant Shores build with much interest and she is really turning out to be a beautiful boat. We have a long list of requirements taken from all the experiences we've had on Delos and other circumnavigators that have sailed both tropical and high latitude routes. This particular design happens to check off quite a few of the requirements. As they say boats are really a collection of compromises so we will just see where the chips fall!

Michael Ward

Brian and Kassa, I was sure this was the surprise you hinted at when you announced the meetup in Brisbane (the one impossible for me to attend). Wow, a new Delos… My opinion probably doesn’t mean anything but have you looked at a new Amel? Reason being, this Amel has safely taken you and your family around the world… why change a proven design or brand? How about an Amel 60? Just wondering…Is a Catamaran really the way to go? Anyway, how much would you sell Delos for? Inquiring minds want to know 😂… in any event, I love you folks and only want the best for you! Fair winds and following seas! Mike Ward

Charles Miller

All though Delos the Sailing Vessel is a huge part of... "You" all of you. It's your adventures and personality that keeps us coming back! So how kool to watch you Kats do it all again on " Delos the 2nd"!!!.. of its line maybe Searria , ....spelled that way on purpose.... on "Delos the 3rd".... on her adventures! Can't wait to see what you do !!!

Björn Amberfält

It totally make sense in all perspectives moving on to this “Delos II” project. The amazing journey that Delos has had with you and Brady and later bringing Karin on,not to mention all the guest crews over the years and what they have brought to this channel. So stoked about it for you,Kazza and Brian!!

Lance H

I love the idea of a big metal “adventure cat”! Given the kind of sailing you do, a super fast wisp of a racing boat is not what you want. This boat can take some punishment, it’s big enough to carry a ton of gear and supplies, and if you have crew, friends, or patrons on board, you can put them in one hull, and have the other hull for your family. As much fun as the olden days were (and I’ve been following you since you two met many years ago) the whole ‘herd of grubby people jammed into a small space’ is not what you want with Sierra (and possible other kids?) sharing the space.

Lance H

Sadly, money has been getting tighter in retirement, and I’ve been starting to think about selling my boat. I’d hate to see her go, I’ve put many hours of hard labour into her, and quite a bit of money, but the time may have come. Cheers, Lance in Canada. S/V Great Escape - Newport 30 - Mk ii

Peggy Pot

Oh, Yes!! I asked a while back if you ever considered changing to a catamaran. It just makes sense as Sierra grows. Delos is incredible and your journey so far is so inspirational! I would love to see boat building content as you guys create your next boat. Exciting!

Robin Henkys

First off: it’s you guys, you will make great whatever you set your minds to. So if your heart is in it too, then you have nothing to worry about. Second, my thoughts and reaction: to me, Delos is almost as much part of the channel’s identity as you guys, the thought of replacing her stings (though it makes total sense to consider with Sierra growing up so quickly 😆). That said, replacing Delos with a new and larger boat, especially a Cat, risks losing some of the humility and sense of wonder that has made your channel great. You’ve once said Delos is often one of the larger cruising boats already, now imagine pulling up in this in a remote island community. Maybe you’re planning to change the style of your adventures (I’m still very hung up on those early days, though those of course are far away for you with a 4yr old on board), maybe the focus will be on having more crew around in the future? In that case it might make total sense. I think if, in addition to specs, you’ve checked that the style of adventure the ship offers matches what you want to do in the future, then you’re good to go. She certainly looks clever and impressive (though you’re a much better judge of that than I). One final check for feels: Can you imagine your Banner on her sails?

Robin Henkys
>>126943459

Actually re-watching the vid, I certainly can imagine the Delos sails on her. Exciting!

Mark Gumprecht

Looks like this would be perfect for you guys! A chance for Brian to do all the systems exactly how he wants, because he is the ultimate boat maintenance man. I built my own 40 tri, which I loved, but I could never imagine maintaining a boat like Delos like Brian has all these years. A lot of these new cats are amazing, but the systems look so complicated, especially the electrical. Keep it as simple as possible. It would be a great family boat, safer for Sierra. Very exciting news!

Mattias Persson

hi, fun with new boat plans but a little weird since Delos and you guys are Amel. I have two questions that came up. I myself have a flybridge boat and I think you will regret having only steering inside the boat. please think again, the time you have together with the children out at the steering wheel is priceless. remember when you talked about the opening in the chapel and that it was so lovely to stand there. that feeling completely disappears :( Question number two, Delos must of course Brandy and Blue take over right 😜?? take care /Mattias

Ian Priestley

Have a quick look at Happy together sailing a Kinetic catamaran , basically a very similar helm position and length that you are looking at but fibre glass . Made in SA . Multi hulls are the way forwards for comfort for a live abound , we are in the process going to the dark side too but opting for a Fontaine pajot because spares and dealer networks are world wide , have fun and I’ve just remembered I need to order a new burgee from you , the last storm in the UK just shredded our old one !

David Kågell

The boat looks sick!! Super cool having the inside cockpit. Aluminum look so weird without any paint 😆😆 i've been looking forward to Delos 2.0 for years 🤘 guess i'm gonna have to wait a little longer

Armin W Rainer

Hi guys, this is exciting news…!! Why would you consider a multi hull? There is beautiful and well thought out and self-build aluminum monohulls out there! Are you sure to give up on all the fun of real sailing? Great to hear that you wanna build it yourself, that a major project. What’s your planned schedule on this? 2 years or more? How about the energy concept: fully electric? So many questions pop up, I hardly can picture how you guys are feeling ….good luck anyways

Tetters

Hey guys, freaking awesome 🤩 just do it! ❤️

William Flower

Watching this video, I am pretty excited about the possibility. Change and learning new things is something that has fed and expanded your minds over your years with the Amel, and that won't stop with a cat. Thoughts? Well I got 'em: 1.) Material Which alloy will be exposed to the water, salt air and barnacles? I am aware that some alloys are designed for that kind of punishment. My years as a machinist back in the '70s and '80s have me intrigued. 2.) Rogue waves and coral I wonder about rogue waves. Does having more hull area present more for a rogue wave to push against? And navigating through coral might require more optics and perhaps a radar setup. 3.) Steadier sailing in "rolly" water Definitely a plus here. All of your worst times have involved a rolling boat, and Kazza's face told me many times this is not good as a steady diet. 4.) Solar power Another plus... you've got massive areas for solar panels. And the panels can provide shade over the cabin and living quarters, which you may need to think about with aluminum's ability to turn sunlight into heat.

Tim and Kelsey

So stoked for you guys!!! We know the rolly anchorages have been less and less fun and no one can say you didn't get every nautical mile out of Delos I. We're really happy for you! 🤙

FreeWilly

Jeez...let me catch my breath, I'm a bit surprised I guess BUT, after years of research on catamarans, that boat checks most of the boxes that I was looking for in a cat. Namely the aluminum, the shaft drive, I feel as well the sail drives are a maintenance problem, the helm in the salon with the forward sail trimming area is a huge plus for me, keeping you safe like the Amel but also keeping you in a/c and heat when you want. Some mfg.'s like H&H offer port and starboard tillers for steering in addition to the main helm in the salon for those days when you want the wind and salt in your face. The protected propeller and skeg hung rudder are another huge safety item. The other thing I was looking at other than solar/lithium is reducing the number of ICE engines you have to deal with and maintain by getting electric drives with one big generator to run them all during lean times. The barefoot sailing doctor channel did a video on aluminum cats on the Garcia Explocat 52 which talks about a lot of the pluses and minuses of aluminum, you may have seen this video, that cat is similar but no protected rudder or shaft drive, no real forward sail trimming, but they do have a worldwide network for parts and repairs. Lastly as self sufficient as you guys are, with aluminum you could carry your own welder for repairs or even modifications, you can't do that with fiberglass. Anyway, Can't wait to hear more!

M. Scott Owitz

I also remember the discussion on Delos 2.0. Maybe expeditionary, maybe research and learning platform, then life changes, the final purpose of 2.0 may change but this is so exciting!! Certainly the balance between financial and family is a hard one. The power of being near Mor Mor and nugget getting some in school schooling is a huge draw. Maybe some place closer, like France (Odd Life). My two cents as older adult…I’d want you around, money comes and goes, family and family time is finite. The 30/40/50% premium to be closer to family would be an expense I would do. And cat vs monohull?! Hard core in both camps but let’s be honest, the cat, for what you are doing makes so much sense. Love the forward sail handling! Imagine staying with buddy boats and having that whole aft area for entertaining! A parquet floor, mirrored dance ball on the cabin top and a karaoke machine! Yeah…I see it!

Hillary Horn

Great next project for y’all! We are also planning a move in a few years from our mono to a cat. With these modern designs it’s not a compromise in sailing- just a new set of parameters and more space and comfort for exploring the world. Good on you! We look forward to the next chapter on Delos 2.0

Lisa & Claude

Wow cool switching to a Cat never saw that coming aluminum allowing high altitude saw so many years and check list for Delos 2.0 can’t wait to see the adventure unfold🤫⛵️🤫😘

Leo Sauermann

Winches far away from Steering makes single handed sailing a bit harder. But how often are you trimming anyway during a typical day. Good visibility on the sails from the winches. Protected rudder and prop are nice. Electric motors are a thing nowadays, I wonder if Oceanvolt provides shaft systems. (Charter sailors from a couch in Austria here)

Brian&Christina

Brian, Kaza, and Sierra, your hopes, dreams, and choices are fully supported by us. A cat appears to be the most sensible choice and seems like a natural next step. When you first set sail on Delos, it's unlikely you imagined it as your forever home. The Super Maramu Delos holds a special place in our hearts, but our hearts are truly with the three of you and the extended Delos crew. We're excited about the prospect of Delos 2. Hopefully Super Ryan can contribute to building it and, perhaps, even join its maiden voyage. Honestly: a contest for x number of Patrons to be able to apprentice on the Delos 2 project for two weeks each would be a pretty cool contest, sign me up! :)

Victoria Makris

This is so exciting! I personally feel like aluminum is the way to go in general for safety, flexibility, environmental sustainability, and increased DIY-ability - at least from my non-experiental POV - just pure research here on it. Curious about the hours spent on welding this boat you show here. Can that be used to gage build time on your own design? Perhaps after the welding is completed, the frame/hulls can be shipped to Sweden for you to continue the build there. I would want to have quick, in-person access to skilled welders during this phase of the build in order to retain those learnings for future maintenance and repair. But I have no clue how long that phase of the build would be. A year or so and maybe another year for the rest in Sweden? Lots to think about for sure! Love the evolution to a Catamaran dream machine :)

Mark Desborough

I think it would be a massive build project for just the aluminum structure and hulls. Just watching the walkthrough, looking at all the parts and welds and thinking about the jigs, tolerances, facilities, time and labor it looks like years long project. Have you talked to anyone else who has built one themselves at home? We suspect there would need to be a lot of insulation to deal with cold in northern latitudes, heat in southern areas, and noise. Overall it would be great to watch the journey from design, to build, and harbor/sea trials and on to exploring the globe. Looks like fun, thanks for the update, we have been awaiting more Delos 2.0 info for a while!

Swami

Plunky is building an aluminum cat

Carol and Greg Gegner

Love the design with the cockpit forward. In scoping the project have the builder estimate hours to complete big chunks of the project; welding hull, electrical, plumbing, etc. that should allow you to understand what parts you can take on. Don’t underestimate the time you will continually spend with the builder making on the fly decisions….Greg

Dave Chapman

Fantastic! Knew an aluminum boat was a dream - now closer to reality!

Mike TopCat

I think most of us long time followers agree that a cat is the right choice. I do worry that a multi year commitment is a bit hard to swallow. I’ve watched Madagascar fiberglass kit take forever frankly I’ve lost interest but I do love them so. Then there was Ron Sailing in Sweden fun watching the build there not boring and it’s neat to see a little Vera growing up then of course there is Riley and Elena La Vagabonde in Vietnam. The crazy “try” not too sure about that. The jury is still out having two small children less space than they had before at least that’s the way it looks. Also, the H&H build with “gone with the Wins” Beautiful boat I’m sure it was expensive but at least it’s not a multi year build project. I do like the idea of you finishing out a pre-welded hull and cockpit like the one you showed today. Then you could finish it up the way you like and it wouldn’t take forever. It’s kind of strange, but you Brian and Karen and the little Nugget have become a part of my life and we have never met. I will continue to support your endeavors no matter what choices you make you guys are never boring.

Skip Vail

Ha, so much for secrets! I had guessed this was it! So excited for you guys and know this will be a MAJOR process and making it fun to share, thank you!! Love the design, protected prop & rudder, etc. A few weeks ago I mentioned Garcia Yachts in France that builds similar boats, much closer to home, do you know them? May be an opportunity for a business/sponsor partnership. Of course that might mean giving up some "freedom" but never know until you ask. ...or maybe some serious "investor Patreons" would be better. I would be interested! Love you guys. Cheers, Skip.

Anne West

That half round extension behind the mast looks like a potential rib breaker. What is its purpose? Also for such a large boat the interior salon seems small.

Patrick Bonck

Will it be too hot in southern latitudes?

Hector & Joann Morales

This is awesome! I’ve always leaned towards aluminum boats. Although building one would be a long arduous journey. That’s a lot of welding! I would lean more towards designing when it comes to an aluminum but we will follow y’all regardless! Good luck deciding!! 🤙🏽

Emily

Excited that you are excited! Metal is a awesome. This reminds me a little bit like the movie Waterworld. Make a tank, take it everywhere. Hope you play some AC/DC while you grind.

Nicholas Lievore

My opinion means nothing. I’m not a cat fan. I’ve also just never been on one. I love traditional sailing. But you guys sail more in a year than I ever will in my lifetime sadly (very happy for you). I’m sad to see the days of Delos may be in the past. With that said. Building your own boat and customizing it will be amazing. I’m super excited to see you guys design and build it. Just wish it was for someone else 😂. I’m also afraid my wife will want a cat since everyone on YouTube seems to be moving that way. Please don’t do this to me! lol. Can’t wait to see the future for your family and your channel! Cheers from Midwest USA on this bloody cold morning. Can’t wait to get back out ourselves sailing.

Jamie Hogan

I'm dictating this so there might be some typos. I'm sure I'm pointing out the obvious but in a hot summer's sunny day at Anchorage the sun is going to make the overhead of the boat very very hot and in the winters in cold northern waters the hull will be very, very cold. This can just be overcome with insulation but I wanted to point that out. Also, when you're welding aluminum you have to be aware of tiny tiny little pores and pinprick holes. It's not as easy as steel. As I know you're aware all of these things can be overcome. Also, you have to be keenly aware of mounting dissimilar metals on the hull electrically. That means no stainless steel fasteners screwing into the hull and being in contact electrically. You've always got to think of that. Very exciting news!

Thomas Koll

Very good alternative! I own a cat (power though) for 23 years and many sailing friends prefer the monohulls, but slowly they are changing their minds after being on a cat. There are a lot of learnings after so many years, but the number 1 I regret is bulbous bows. I dont know any sailboat with them, but the skinnier the hull, the more spray due to lack of buoyancy. I am not an expert, but I would research that.

Vance Delong

I think that boat could use a skylight/moonroof over the helm. It would help to see the sails.

Shelly Ackerman

How very exciting! Happy for you guys to explore new and exciting things. Trust your heart and gut more than the logic focused brain, so as to not kill creativity! Can't wait to see what the future brings!

Katie Litchfield

I almost need to ruminate on feedback, but there is one thing that stands out… When I was a child, my family had a 20’ aluminum fishing boat that we used on freshwater lakes all over the place. My cousins unintentionally grounded that boat so many times, my family grounded it intentionally almost every time we went out. Sturdy didn’t even begin to describe it. I loved that boat. Right up until I had to climb back into it after it had been sitting in the sun… hot didn’t even begin to describe the temperature of that unpainted metal. Truly, all of our input can help to guide decisions, but what really holds meaning is where you both stand on it. Childhood memories of the lakes are made sweeter by the time spent on land. My joy has always been found in the water. If there is a way to let Sierra spend more time with family while the boat is being built, it would be a gift to her. Family is clearly just as important to you as sailing is. Let water be sweeter than land for a while. You guys are capable of making anything interesting.

John Weiler

I guess the only real question is where do we sign up for build days?

Russell T Wilson

Very exciting news! And getting to design your own home and be intimately involved in building it with your own hands sounds especially meaningful for you both. I’m curious how the motion of a cat will differ from the monohull? My brief experience with cats is the motion is much more dramatic. Is stability way out there a concern at all? Also, as mentioned by another commenter above, how much of a concern are dissimilar metals on an aluminum yacht with deck fittings, through-hulls, etc., etc.? Otherwise, the benefits of two hulls and a large span between sounds fantastic for living space, especially as the family grows.

Edgar Vinueza

I feel like Delos is the main character. Been watching since the beginning and all has evolved around the vessel. This is sad news in our household. Hope it stays in your family. Maybe use for charters like other channels have done. Happy for you and we'll always follow. Everyone seems to be changing boats but you have lasted the longest and we didn't see this coming at all. I wish I had the funds, I would buy Delos in a second. I feel like I know it.

Gravytrain

Exciting stuff! I have been watching Gone with the Wynns and they have been having a catamaran built (composite & carbon fiber). As a retired aerospace engineer, I have doubts about an aluminum boat but I have no real experience with this. I do like the systems on the boat the Wynns are building, especially the aux propulsion.

Leslie DeCamp

I have followed and enjoyed every minute of your journey.. I was sad to see when Brady and all the different crews left, but then as life has moved along with your family , I have thoroughly enjoyed that also. Soooo for the change of boats, it WILL be a change for all of us, but I think a smart move for you. My world sailor friends in Maryland changed from monohull, Tayana 55', to cat a few years back and they have just LOVED the change....lots more room and easier for the 2 of them to handle alone. When they transatlantic they always had crew.... anyways, I can't wait to hear more of your new journey!

Juan David

So cool. It does kind of look like a performance boat and the weight compared to a carbon boat (HH52) is only 19.72% heavier(light ship). Could just need more sail area to get to the same performance numbers. Would be interesting to see what kind of hybrid/electric propulsion could you incorporate? And how much solar can you get on that rooftop? Also curious on the performance comparison upwind? Can we get Polars?

Pete and Nicole

Seems like that grounding a couple months ago hit you hard! Haha We have done a fair amount of sailing on both mono & cat. We prefer the space and stability of the cat, but the mono points to the wind so much better. The mini keels of your design should help address that issue. We have a Seawind 1370 cat production slot that has a very similar keel design and that point to around 35 degrees I believe. Love the protected prop / rudder design! Curious as to why the aluminum hull is so appealing to you guys? Cheers Pete & Nicole

Colleen Balch

So exciting! All the possibility and an aluminum boat means you can cruise happily nearer and to the north of Kazaa’s stomping grounds. What fun and can’t wait to see things unfold. PS where is the Nuggs as you’re learning to weld? Did she get to visit Mor Mor?

Jay and Robin Orum

YT Ran Sailing is building his boat in Sweden. It would be cool if you toured his boat when you’re back in Sweden. 🇸🇪

Michael Wilke

Very cool project :-) I own an Aluminum Monohull and I am so happy with it. you‘re perfectly right to chose Aluminum it gives you soo much more flexibility

CATHERINE HACKETT

While I'm not a huge fan of catamarans, that one could win me over. I love the inside helm and forward sailing cockpit. So exciting to think about. I'm currently following Ran III's build in Sweden and Tally Ho's build in the US so obviously construction videos don't put me off. Looking forward to hearing about your thought processes and design ideas. Dream on!❤️⛵️

lowell mccormick

How many man hours are in that boat so far? My many years of working in a metal fabrication shop have taught me that the most expensive metal in the fab shop is the weld metal. That's because of the labor associated with welding.

Christopher Morse

Great stuff guys. Stoked for you! About the "where to build" question. Guessing you have already talked to Andy and Mia at 59 North about their experiences refitting in Northern Europe. Was recently hearing Andy talk about that on the podcast. Also interesting to hear that you went away from trimarans after a long deep dive. I would like to know more about that. La Vagabonde just launched their tri and it has me thinking about them again. That beam is something to reckon with though.

Pete Gasson

well that explains why Colin from Parlay was in Brisbane this week

Sailing SV Delos
>>126991568

Yeah, there are some compelling things about the performance. But in the end the form factor required to get even the same space we have on Delos is HUGE. Then you are limited by beam on some very basic stuff things like haulouts, marina, yard space, etc. So in the end we just didnt feel it was a practical option for our type of cruising and future plans. That could be different depending on what you are looking to do however.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126989018

About 1300 for the hull and bridge deck another 1000 for the cabin and topsides. 3,300 hours in total so far. He did it all by himself for this one: He said with a helper to position and do prep work it would speed it up quite a bit.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126985045

Hey Catherine! I know, it’s always a compromise with boats. It’s been quite a roller coaster of considerations for us to even get this far…. But this is really the first design I’ve seen in a while that got us really excited so that is something 🤣⛵️

Sailing SV Delos
>>126980311

Hey Colleen! I know super exciting right?!?! The family building this boat has 2 daughters (7 & 10) so Sierra was in heaven playing with them 😀

Sailing SV Delos
>>126976684

Congrats Pete! The 1370 is a cool boat 👍⛵️ Al is a very stiff and light material. Also no mold required for fabrication which means you can do lots of customization. Also it bends rather than fracturing on impact so with a 6 mill bottom it puts our minds at ease more for higher lattitudes.

Hey Juan, will work on the performance numbers but I think in the same ballpark as a similar sized Catana. More of an SUV of the sea rather than sports car, but with still plenty of go ⛵️👍. As far as solar I think it can accommodate 4kw up on the roof and considering of hybrid/electric in one hull and fully electric in the other. We will see, all very new and exciting!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126975546

Hey Leslie, yes so many chapters in our sailing life 🤣. So excited to share more with you as we move through our decisions!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126975434

Yeah, Aluminum boats are an interesting bit. I have spoken to so many owners that are incredibly happy with their choice over the years. When you see 40+ year old build out there doing well with lots of miles it says it can be done, just needs to be done right with the proper considerations for dissimilar metals, galvonic isolation, etc. Much to learn!!!

>>126993168

Between you and devilliers you’ll finalise a great boat. See ya when you get to nz.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126972453

Thanks for your kind words Edgar. Delos has been such a centerpiece of the journey but I also think its been the combination of people and spirit along with Delos herself that had made it truly special! Thanks for sticking with us since the beginning. Whatever we do we’ll do our best to make you proud!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126970158

Hey Russell- The motion is undeniably more dramatic: Less overall movement but much sharper in my opinion. There is no “relief valve” like heeling over in a mono so this will need to be taken into account. I think the designers have a pretty good handle on it by this point, people been sailing multi’s for ages…. There are definitely some dissimilar metal issues and galvanic corrosion to consider but these also have solutions. Always a trade off for everything but we are willing to work hard and figure things out to make to make it happen. We will see!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126967192

Hey Katie! Kind of reminds me of all the abuse we’ve put Maggie through and after 12 years of hard cruising she is still ticking. Thank you for your kind words and support!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126964822

Hey Jamie, wow the dictation worked really good. I clearly remember burning our butts on Maggie before we painted her topsides 👍🤣. I think we would definitely insulate, both for quiet and temp.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126964782

Hey Nicolas! Yes there is a bit of nostalgia on our part as well. So many pivotal life events onboard. But, could be the start of yet another chapter in our ever evolving voyage! sending our best to you and your wife. Stay warm!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126962362

Yeah, about 3,300 hours of labor for just the hull and deck. Then probably twice that for fit out. Not to be taken lightly.

Sailing SV Delos
>>126960162

Hey Patrick- We would definitely insulate, both for sound and temp variance. Probably a coating or pads like we did on Maggie to keep the temp reasonable I think? Lots to consider 🙌

Sailing SV Delos
>>126958096

Hey Anne- That’s actually the pedestal for the main winch, mast would be directly in front so probably used for main sail hoist and other big load items. The interior would be approx 1 meter larger without the forward cockpit but I really love that design feature! Also breeze would flow through really nice at anchor, but you lose wall space for the door. Always a tradeoff in some aspect…..

Sailing SV Delos
>>126957830

Hey Skip! Yeah the Garcia Explorocat 52 I think you are referring to. I spoke with them last year at the boat show. There was just something about that design that didn’t resonate well with me. Garcia obviously builds supern cool boats but I thought it was heavier and deeper than required for 16 meters. Like 4 tons heavier and 2 feet deeper if I recall? We will keep you updated for sure my friend- stay tuned!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126955197

Thanks for your kind words and support Mike! Yeah, its about 3,300 hours for the hull and deck. Quite a chunk of work right there! If we did it in Brisbane work could continue and we could split our time between Delos and the build as we sail towards Australia over the next year. Its a very attractive option! Stay tuned 👍

No doubt you guys know what you're doing and my wife and I absolutely love watching your videos. I'm sure it's old news to you, but you inspire us and I'm sure a lot of other people

Sailing SV Delos
>>126954370

Hey Mark- You are absolutely correct there is about 3,300 hours in this hull right now. And he’s a professional boiler maker. It was actually done at his farm in the country and moved here a few months ago. Its the only hull in existence at this point. Serious undertaking! Yes on insulation for the reasons you mention for sure 👍 We will see where it takes up 😉

Sailing SV Delos
>>126953427

Hey Victoria! About 3,300 hours already get her to this point. Probably would be a little efficiency gained with 2 people to hold, move assemblies, etc. but still a ton of hours any way you cut it. I did check and got quotes ~100K for shipping so its a bit steep but if the hull makes sense in Australia then to finish in Sweden it’s possible. Or maybe more likely sail her bare-bones to finish the fit out? So many questions!!!!

Sailing SV Delos

I know neither did we but when we looked at this design it really checks alot of boxes for us. We will see! Xxoo and thanks for your support!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126951237

Yeah Scott, it’s not a decision to be taken lightly! You nailed it with the thinking on it being a back “lounge” rather than a cockpit with all sailing control right up front at the base of the mast. I have spoken with some Chris White and Gunboat owners and they rave about the setup.

Sailing SV Delos

Actually I did watch that video a while back on the Garcia. For me the skeg and rudder combo with the inside steering is a real bonus. I’m doing lots or research on the new drive systems that are available l. One thought is to have a standard diesel/prop shaft in one hull for range and dependability. Then you can add a parallel electric motor to act as a huge DC genset, and drive another fully electric motor in the other hull. Its pretty cool I think 🤔

Hey William! These designs typically use 5083 or Sealium. 5083 has excellent characteristics in salt water. If you watch out dor dissimilar metals and stray currents of course. Maggie is 5083 AL and after 12 years absolutely 0 corrosion of any kind. Also, I think that roof would be close to 4KW solar!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126945229

I do think the form factor has a lot of benefits, especially considering we spend a lot odd time on the hook. She’ll still cross oceans, but wont roll when we get there 🤣. If we do it all ourselves probably a 4 year project. If we have some help, well hopefully less! I would love to do a diesel parallel hybrid. I think there are some real benefits there. I know so much to think about!

Sailing SV Delos
>>126945085

Yeah for sure I wish we could make a decision and have it done but I guess the things in life that really pay off sometimes take a while….. I think it looks kind of rough and rugged, but you could do some cool swirly patterns in the Aluminum I think. Kind of like a brushed aircraft look maybe?

Sailing SV Delos

💯 agree with you regarding the systems. Paired down, simple, yet redundant and functional. I have lots of ideas there 👍😀

Sailing SV Delos
>>126943459

Hey Robin! Yeah I get what you’re saying. The adventure has always been about the boat, and the crew that sailed her. We’ve always prided ourselves on doing the work ourselves, and would see the next boat as an evolution of that. Something we would be proud to say- hey we turned a pile of metal into a boat and can now sail her around the world. She doesnt need to be flashy, but practical, purposeful, and set up for ocean crossings and the type of extended cruising we love to do. If we could pull that off I’d be super proud to let the Buddha man fly ⛵️👍

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Lance- I hear you boats are such a passion and labor of love, not to mention an extraordinary cost. I think if that though didnt cross your mind from time to time that would be a bit strange!

>>126945085

Ohyeah, brushed aircraft thats awesome! Wouldn't it be cool to have the wall of fame/shame with just naked aluminium and pictures on top or any other spot? I am gonna miss the cozyness in the mahogany cave you got on Delos 1.0 but i trust you'll make it work! 🤘

Sailing SV Delos
>>126941365

Yeah buddy thanks for that. I like to think the story line and videos of this type of build would be quite interesting. Especially all the systems integration. Of course thats the old engineer in me 🤣

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Michael! Well we did consider a new Amel years ago when we visited the factory. Besides the obvious fact that we just could never afford a new Amel we feel the desire to grow, to change, to try new things. If you look at our wish list a boat like this ticks off a crazy amount of them. We still have a while to figure things out though and will have a few more years sailing on Delos regardless of what we do. But when the time comes it would be natural to see if there is any interest from our supporters that have made so much possible for us!

Michael Ward
>>126941356

Brian, I have no doubt that you know what your needs are as a growing family. It's not my intention to try to guess all those needs... you're an intelligent guy, and I've no doubt you and Kassa have thought this through. You folks are the ones actually living day to day on whatever boat you choose and really, thats the bottom line. I appreciate that you're caring about what we feel and think but its for you and your family, and we're willing to support you in any event. My inquiry about Delos value was not meant as a personal query... I was wondering how much it might offset the cost of a new boat (in my reference a new Amel). I do remember your visit to the Amel factory in New Rochelle but I didn't know that a new boat was discussed. I have no doubt it's very expensive. Be safe my friend! Thanks for the Q&A...

Anne West

What attracts you to doing the hull build yourselves?

john eikevik

Happy that you all are taking this obvious next step, it is much deserved! I also think that some more time on the hard' will do good for all three! Enjoy the process!

lowell mccormick

I saw a comment about galvanic corrosion and wanted to toss this out there. It's not just dissimilar metals, it's also dissimilar alloys that should be isolated from each other. When I've worked on pumping stations in S. Louisiana, we isolated the SS alloy 304 flanges from SS alloy 316 bolts. The 60" dia. x 2" thick SS 304 flanges of the large discharge pipes had the holes oversized to fit phenolic sleeves into the bolt holes and the SS 316 bolts inserted thru the sleeves. On each side of the SS flange, we used phenolic washers against the flange to isolate the 316 flat washers from the 304 flanges. This was in brackish water conditions. Galvanic corrosion is sometimes hidden but always persistent.

William Flower
>>126946015

Way cool... Maggie has already given you 12 years of first-hand experience with 5083, both in the water and in salt-laden wind. 4KW... you can probably weld with that, given massive deep-cycle batteries!

Mike McNiff

Fabulous design and look. And room for perhaps one more permanent crew!

Chris Hughes

You were the first channel that we came across during the pandemic lockdowns and have always been our favorite! We are now looking into a cat of our own and the main reasons we aren't even considering a monohull are the space available and the lack of "lean". Have fun with the decision processes and thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

David Hagler

Very interesting idea. I am interested in the thoughts behind the idea of building it yourself vs. having it built. I am sure you will figure out a way to make it work. I have been enjoying your content for a VERY long time. It would be interesting to see how the content evolves to suit your next pursuit.

Matthew Korwel

Love this for y'all. Did you have a link to the yard/builder/designer would selfishly love to learn more about the details as well. We are currently on our 40ft mono in Banderas Bay down from Redmond WA and spent the morning making a list of what we want in our next boat... Basically it's this 🥳 "the 4 runner of the sea" as our kids call it.

Greg Zivic

Love it! As an aluminum boat owner I’m a fan of course. And in my days as a ship repair contractor I feel aluminum is incredibly easy to work with, especially using new aluminum (as opposed to repairing aluminum). Our boat is much cooler in the heat than most of the glass boats I’ve sailed because of the heavy insulation we have and of course going to the higher latitudes you don’t worry about a bit of ice. When I redid the deck I did several layers of paint and then used sand in the top coat to create a non skid. We chose also to leave the hull unpainted and allow the hull to oxidize. But I like the “work boat” look. Happy to help in any way I can if you need it. I’m still learning every day.

Peter Kane

I'm sure you have connected with Jess and Matt on Elements who had an aluminum boat to get their feedback! To me, as a novice, I would be concerned about cold and heat with respect to aluminum....

Nigel Houghton-Allen

Alu is the way to go FWIW -IMHO :-) any way id get some one else to build it. I can only imagine building a boat is 10 times worse than building a house, which is pretty close to the most stress you can put on a relationship. Welding alloy is a real pig, so its no walk in the park. About the only smart thing I’ve seen Plucky do is get someone else to build his cat! Dashew’s alloy FPB is a winner, plenty of info on insulation and galvanic stuff. You can still Coppercoat the hull too. Most cats’s saloon always looks a bit small to me, i love Chris whites boats but the accomodation is average. I’m pretty sure you would get a few Ozzies come up and do a “working bee” to help out, hey its only a 2000km drive for me. Or get it built in Asia….best wishes xx

Brian Downing

Been loving you guys for years! Ashley and Ben have been working on their Nahoa 55 design for a while now. They seem to have a lot in common with your wish list for Delos 2.0. Jamie and Princess on Jupiter 2 have an Al cat too that was built the Philippines and designed by an Australian. These are both amazing cats and aluminum is definitely the way to go for high latitudes if one can afford it 🤣. Good luck and hope and pray to see your dreams come true!❤️

Michael Williams

Love the back salon and all the shade it would afford. It would certainly hold all of your solar panels out of the way and easy to maintain. The front winch station is cool. I think you have been itching to try the Cat for a while, but love your monohull as an extension of yourselves. That ketch rig is so stable! But I think your learning desires will win out. I imagine you are really excited to take all of your experience and point-and-shoot everything in place. A smart Nav table/station/Sierra classroom, battery storage, generator and water-maker placement, dive locker, freezer and dry storage, common sense galley, living suites, foolproof heads(!). Once again, you and Karin are so generous to allow us to watch the process! Best of luck!

MaryLee Alford

We are so excited for you guys!!! We love that you are considering aluminum and a catamaran, which makes so much sense for the comfort of a family! There is so much more privacy away from guests and crew on a catamaran. Of all the shows we watch regarding cruisers building new boats, we have said that if we were live aboard cruisers, our favorite boat build so far is the Portifino 52, being built for the Barefoot Doctors. We have always loved the forward facing doors to access the bow, which is much safer than walking around the boat from the outside. Make sure there are steps from the bow helm to the trampoline, and that the design is such that you will not bump your head on the way up and out. That’s why Carl is bald! (Joking😆) (See the Leopard design in this area.) Something Ruby Rose missed noticing during their build is the visibility of the sails from the helm. (Sucks!) The Leopards have a long window in the salon ceiling, giving great interior lighting and sail visibility. Hopefully you will have a window above the salon helm station. We are concerned with the tiny space in the exterior bow helm area. It seems claustrophobic and not enough room for family and crew to be together for visiting. So much of your time is currently spent together around the helm on Delos. We think you would miss that. The bow area can be more for visiting, lounging, a play area for Sierra, and a place to escape the afternoon western sun when anchored in easterly winds. We think an aft helm and interior helm with great sailing visibility provides more space for all to remain together in larger spaces but, perhaps we don’t yet understand the concept of the bow helm design. Hopefully you will have dinghy davits with electric winches for hoisting. The only thing is, when at the stern it blocks the aft views however, you still have visibility and great fishing areas over the sugar scoops. Our vote is to build at the boatyard. As you indicated, it’s less expensive, and you have better access to supplies & immediate expertise when needed plus, you will probably finish much sooner; less stress and headaches. The money saved can help cover travel expenses to visit Märta/MorMor during the build. How exciting it will be for her to visit you in Australia! This is all so very exciting and we are excited to watch!

John Kimbler

YES! It's tine for Delose 2.0!

Thomas Riley

If you're looking at building an aluminium catamaran it might be worth talking to Plucky (Sailing into freedom) he's currently building one to a new design he's come up with in Greece.

John Hardie

Looks awesome guys, I think a Cat is a terrific idea from what I’ve seen they are much more suited to your lifestyle. Safe travels back to Delos. I also hope to catch up one day!

Andrew Berry

This thing looks a weapon….durable as well for high latitudes. My thoughts would be if you really want to build or finish the boat, to purchase hull and decks completed by a professional. Not only will it be quicker, but you can generally be assured of the quality and focus on the things in the interior and finish that are important to you. Building in Oz does open up a lot of opportunity for some cruising grounds post launch….. back to see if Barry the Barracuda has grown any bigger!

Robert Giroux and Cindy Xu

Check out the aluminum cat that the Barefoot Doctors are building in Dubai with Portofino

Lori Kallestad

Very excited for you. Thanks for sharing your learning journey. I’m super curious about aluminum boats but it’s hard to research them. Most seem custom built with little accessible info. Love welding, got to do some of that in college. Best wishes for all of your decision making and all the logistics!

Justin Larsen

Can I call “dibs” on Delos 1.0 yet? 😉 But really, I’d miss her on the channel. I know another boat will come some day, and I like the track you’re on to get there. Looks like she’d be well suited for the things you guys do! 👍

Sailing SV Delos
>>127395436

Thanks Lori! Most Aluminum boats for sailing have been built in The Netherlands and France, and of course NZ and Australia also. Some of the more well known are Garcia, Alubat, KM, Futuna, and many others. Most them are monohulls with lifting keels!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127251049

Yeah, been watching that one for sure. I believe the design philosophy is quite a bit different as his main focus seems to be outright speed. I think he’s gotta keep the weight to 8 tons or something!?! Is that right?

Sailing SV Delos
>>127173900

Really good insights MaryLee! I’m in love with the forward sailing cockpit idea, I’ll need to show you some photos. Its deceiving but its a pretty decent space up there!

Yeah, the Nohoa is from the same designer so there are alot of similarities. We actually know Jamie and Princess, met them in Singapore on lap 1 and kept in touch all these years! I think Al is pretty cool for a custom boat.

Sailing SV Delos
>>127116462

Yeah mate I hear ya but there is just something so alluring about digging into a project like this. I wonder if we can somehow find the best of both worlds? Fingers crossed 🤞

Sailing SV Delos
>>127092327

Hey Greg awesome to hear! I was really happy with how our foray into welding went. With the right setup and guidance we didn’t do half bad. I also like the raw aluminum look. One question- what do you use for bottom paint with aluminum boat?

Sailing SV Delos
>>127034180

There is just something about sinking my teeth into a large, complicated problem to solve and seeing it through to the end. All while directly influencing the decisions made along the way with what we’ve seen what works and doesnt in the real world. I think too often there is a huge disconnect between designers, builders, and sailors and you end up seeing some pretty funny choices that could easily have been remedied.

Robert Giroux and Cindy Xu

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m under the impression that the difficulty of welding aluminum has been largely overcome by modern welding technology?

Steve Borst

Steve and Linda Dashew had their Beowulf welded up in Truckee, CA and had the interior finished down under. Totally doable.

Sailing SV Delos
>>127476458

Hey Robert and Cindy! After going from never having welded aluminum to welding full frames in under 2 weeks (expert tutelage) I'd have to agree with you 100%. It's sort of like painting or varnishing in the regard. 95% setup and prep work and 5% actually doing it. We used a double pulsed wire fed MIG machine and have to say after you get the settings nailed we were putting down some decent welds. After the first week Dan (person who built the boat in the thumbnail) even let Kazza and I weld together from frames for Hull #2. Kazza has a very smooth hand and her welds looked great!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127520889

Hey Steve- Dashew designs are very cool! Ha that's interesting I didn't know it was done in Truckee. We might consider doing the opposite. Having it welded up in Australia and finishing somewhere else :)

Roderick Bauer

That's super interesting, guys. I'm excited to follow your process in selecting Delos 2.0!

Bonne Mike

You guys look so happy ... like your World is new again for you ......... inside what will become a new Space Ship for your journeys. You did not show down inside the nacelles? Get every option up front! AC and FLS a must. Keep 'em flyin

Michael Nawrocki

Brian and Kazza, So thrilled to hear the news!! When can we Patrons meet Dan?! I have been a licensed professional architect for the past 40 years, and totally focussed on custom home design for the past 20 (so 20 years of mistakes!). I'm absolutely fascinated with super maximum-efficiency residential design; such as tiny homes, cabins, camper vans, sailboats, and the like, especially since patronizing you guys from Nov 2016. Happy to help with any feedback you might like during this process. While a sailboat is by no means a single-family home, living space is living space, and you don't brush your teeth any differently on a sailboat than on dry land. Would love to help in any way!! (BTW, I'm not far from Annapolis). Best! Michael

mark hyde

Hey guys, I've been hanging with you since the Delos duct tape tattoo days! As a long time cruising monohull owner and cat charterer, I think you are totally on point with this both with design and materials. Love the prop/skeg/rudder. This could be your forever boat! Cheers!!
