Alex

F YES!!!! Congrats!

Tom Worrell

Great new direction! So glad you'll keep sailing in between - it will keep everything fun and fresh. Looking forward to the webcam sounds like a great idea.

David Seabrook

Super exciting! So many questions: - What's the downwind sail design? Do I see a little sprit? How big a chute can you fly? - What was the thinking behind choosing a multihull design? - (Maybe a stupid question:) How does having a metal hull affect your wifi? - You do your own maintenance. How accessible will all the systems be? Better or worse than Delos 1.0? - How does the storage compare? - Are you adding heating for far northern or southern latitudes? - Are you sticking with electric sail furlers? Will you add electric winches for halyards/sheets? -...probably many more to come! Congratulations!!

Michael and Phyllis Selby

Fantastic! Have you given any thought to having a diesel/electric hybrid engine? I’ve seen several of the YouTube new boat builds putting in such a system.

Mattias Persson

Grattis! Blir det ca två år av arbete?

Maria Levin

I'm so happy for you guys!! If anybody deserves it it's you three ❤️ i think i speak for everyone when i say - Brian better bring all the stats when you're finished with the build.

lowell mccormick

Emerald Steel is a 38' self-built steel sailboat, built by Jules and Susan. Susan did all of the welding. They are the first sailing channel I followed. I've watched Leo Sampson rebuild Tally Ho for 6 years. He's getting close to launching. One of the things I've enjoyed about watching Leo's build is what I call the Tom Sawyer effect. Tom's aunt Polly made him whitewash her fence and he hated it. But he made it look like fun. Fun enough that his friends were willing to pay him for the chance to whitewash the fence. Leo has had many volunteers (and a few paid skilled employees) help him rebuild Tally Ho. Maybe the same thing will happen with Delos 2.0 so that the build will go quicker than planned. Will the name of the new boat that's painted on the hull be Delos 2.0?

Sailing SV Delos
>>127577288

Hey Lowell, YES I absolutely love that. I really hope we can get a few Delos Down Under Work Parties going :) I'm thinking Delos 2.0 fits pretty well but we're open to suggestions of course!

Nate See

Woooohoooooo!!!!

Shane and Jennifer Overfield

We are so excited and glad you let us be a part of your journey!! Can’t wait to see how this new boat comes together.

Michael Farmer

Incredible guys! That cat is going to be a platform for your future as a family!

RumRiver

Exciting! Can’t wait to see where y’all go with that.

Patricia

Yes vote here for webcam! I think Ben and Ashley are working with deVilliers on their Nahoa 55, which looks very similar. I think they settled on a yard in NZ to do their build. Super stoked you found such a great place with on-point vibes and resources 💙💙

Ashley Simms

Such amazing news! I’m so excited for you all and excited to see how you end up formatting the new chapter videos.

Bonne Mike

After seeing La Vaga's downstair Cat escape window ......... I remember my Dad Captain Bob explaining that a monohull in heavy broadside wind ...... as it's sail becomes blown down horizontal in heavy wind ......... lifts it's ballast out of the sea with the hull as a fulcrum ...... thus regaining it's actual weight along with mass ...... and hopefully righting the ship's hull back into the sea ........ as long as open hatches don't flood the hull. Theory Two would be to rip the sheet loss to let the boom go to remove the force of the wind, or finally turn into the wind if time allows. CAT's do not have the full luxury. Seems like you are set. I am sure you know what you are up against. I feel like you are definitely making this ship more diver oriented .... which should be a great addition. More clearance also good with lee boards too. PLEASE get FLS again for bomeys and surface hunting good dice spots ..... maybe an upgrade? Sierra will have so much more room to grow, ride a bike on the high seas ...... and love the stable ride. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Typical that you are joining in the build instead of diy. Get all the options! Maybe a small brass cannon to repel any intruders ...... better than the old plan of a machete. Keep 'em flyin

Frank

Congratulations! It's the right move, more space, more homey, plenty of room for Sierra to ride her bike, have her own room....exciting!!

Mike Medina

Congrats on the new boat build! The live camera sounds amazing. A few questions that come to mind. Will there be any visa issues to stay in country long enough to complete the build? Did wanting to give your daughter a little more stability factor into the decision? What is your plan for Delos once the build is done? Are you just going to sell it or try to keep it in the family with your brother? As a network engineer, I'm so amazed by your skill and ability to work on all the systems on your boat.

Hillary Horn

Very exciting next chapter! I also have enjoyed watching Leo building Talley Ho- i think this is a similar opportunity using completely different and modern materials and techniques. Onward!

Bonne Mike

P.S. After looking at the plans ...... that is a beauty from the future .... that you and your sailing family deserve ..... after keeping the Delos fit and trim into it's midlife. Those roll-in deck davits for Maggie are a work or art .... to make that area clear ..... as a back porch that will visit the World around. Keep 'em flyin

Paul Hegreness

So exciting to follow you on your journey!

Hayden Foster

Congrats on your decision. You guys look so happy and excited! Can't wait to see the progress and final result!

Kyall

Can’t wait to see the build! Stoked you guys will be in Aus for a while. Patron’s meet up for sure!!

David Levine

Wow, that is some exciting news! Yes to the web cam so we can share the experience. It's going to be so cool to see you guys take all your experience and learning and turn it into your own custom adventure home! And Australia has always been on my list of travel fantasies, so a big yes to the idea of some Patreon work parties!

Cheyne Daggett

We will have to come down and visit. Works that my sister-in-law lives just north of Brisbane.

Calico Skies

Holy * Wow wow wow! Sooo excited for you guys 👊🏻 🙌🏼 💃🏼 What an amazing adventure you are about to begin. We cant wait to hear about all the details. Love that you will be keeping Delos :) Love all of it! Yay!!! Huge hugs 🤗

Mark Desborough

Super stoked for all of you! Looking forward to seeing it all come together with typical Delos awesome filming and narration. A live cam is a great idea. For episode ideas, it would be great to learn more about the design process and how the overall structure is engineered/tested (virtually, CAD, stress model, etc.) so you have high confidence in the structure. It would be good to see all the tools, jigs, pins, fixtures, bending, plate line, and alignment stuff as well. As the design matures, it would be an interesting set of stats to know how many pieces of aluminum, how many holes, how many feet of cable, how much weight, how may bends, how many feet of welds.

DARRELL MORRITT

GREAT NEWS, and so exciting. Please document everything and Share the adventure. Can hardly wait.

Krystal Couture

congratulations! What a beautiful transition for your family! All the best with the build! I can't wait to see it all!

Troy Sublett
>>127576348

Very Nice but $$$$. Maybe some diesel electric hybrid engine company would like to help out.😁 That’s a dream setup for sure!

Tim S

Awesome guys. Congratulations, and I can't wait to see the new Delos on the water in the future!

Tom Caban

Congratulations on reaching this huge milestone ! Given the huge amount of work ahead, do you have a sense of what the timeline will look like yet? You mentioned 3,000 hrs for just metal work. I can’t even imagine what will be involved in wiring/systems install, interior install/finish, etc. You two are brave as hell 😀

Victoria Makris

Wowzers - this is so damn exciting, and I know so many of us are all riding this wave of energy going into this next project with you! It makes so much sense to have it built there hearing you guys talk through it. Such big congratulations to you guys on this next big move on this stage of life! I’m sure we’d all love to hear continual insights into your thought process and choices along the way as you guys are planning already, but also dive deeper into the industries involved in your particular build of the Delos 525 Dive Edition and all the logistics that go into sourcing materials, following each one from its raw state to its polished state on Delos 525. Aluminum is such an interesting metal to work with and source and within the boat-building industry there are probably nuances (that matter) that cannot be found while doing general research about the metal. So why aluminum vs. steel for example, what grade of aluminum is needed for a sailing vessel; the nuances to welding with aluminum. How do you weld without those pesky little air bubbles? Very curious how big of a stretch it would be to just make a mold for the hulls rather than weld so many pieces together. Why not that route? A live stream during the build would be absolutely awesome. Such exciting things to look forward to!

Scott C. Wise

Am I the only one who has questions about this? First off, everyone else here knows this will be a catamaran, right? I remember Brian detailing the positives and negatives of monohulls vs those of cats. Monohulls came out on top. Heck, if someone GAVE me a 2 million $ catamaran I would sell it ASAP for a nice used monohull and pocket the 1 million $ (or more) difference. Not that it will happen, but I dread SV Delos (the Cat version) becoming another LaVagabon. That's probably unlikely since some Cat manufacturer isn't "giving" a brand new, expensive catamaran to Brian and Karin. However, LaVagabon went from a favorite YT sailing channel of mine to a blatantly, even disgustingly, commercial addvert channel intent on selling as much stuff as possible to viewers in order to pay-off their cat. Clearly, this is not the same situation. Brian and Karin plan to actually help build this catamaran. Wonderful! I wonder how much sweat equity they will be able to put in? I am currently enjoying sailing videos made by Alluring Arctic Sailing and, of course, Distant Shores. Both have, or soon will have, aluminum monohulls. Particularly considering Distant Shores - who have been sailing for 3-4 decades (or more), I wonder why they decided to build a custom aluminum monohull? I'll end here, wishing the best for what is to come.

Clark Straw

Looks like a very interesting and exciting project! We sailed our Mason 54, Final Straw, on a seven year adventure from San Diego to Australia from 2001 to 2008. But we've been looking at cats as an alternative for their added living space and stability. I do like a flying bridge arrangement for the helm and better visibility. Also wondered about access to the life raft when the dinghy is stowed and time is of the essence. Loved NZ and did an extensive re-rigging haul out there. Spent 3 yrs in Australia and found a great yard in Mooloolaba that was inexpensive compared to California and did a great job with our teak decks and new hull painting. Have fun with this very cool cat design!

Lisa & Claude

How very exciting all parts of the build would be cool to see also the live build feed would be cool . Learning why you make certain design choices would also be very interesting this is going to be such an amazing adventure and cool chapter to watch unfold ❤️⛵️❤️

Lance H

I’m definitely of two minds about this - while I think it’ll be great for you guys, both in capability and comfort, I worry that you might “poison the well” the way La Vagabond did, as another commenter said. Part of the charm of your channel was always challenging all that the world could throw at you in a ‘good old boat’ with poor Brian busting his ass to keep it running. Yes, you will be taking part in building her, and that will help with that aspect, but LV went from “scrappy explorers in an old boat” to perceived corporate sponsored near-employees (although they did, later, release a video that their boat wasn’t free, and they didn’t get as much of a gift as was perceived) but, I think the damage was done by that point. They continue to spent an awful lot of time talking about the marketing and revenue part of their activities, which always sours their videos. I rarely watch them these days. I hope that by being part of the process, and the natural charm of your family, you guys can avoid this, but if I were you, I’d state right up front that you’re paying for at least a good chunk of the boat, and try to keep the ‘we’re a family corporation’ talk to a minimum. Just keep being the people we all fell in love with, and you should be just fine! All my best, Lance

Myra Slepoy

I am very excited for you and love that it has sparked a passion to learn welding and making a new platform to explore the world. Congrats!!

Garry Gill

congrats on the decision to build a cat. Love it

Sailing SV Delos
>>127597561

Hey Lance , Yeah I get it! But I think once you meet the characters involved in the build you’ll see this is a real grass-roots effort right from the start! We have a very cool opportunity to challenge the traditional way things are done. This and a lot of ingenuity and sweat equity are the only way we’re gonna be able to pull this off.

Sailing SV Delos
>>127595125

Yeah, the fly bridge can seem compelling but the drawbacks, for us at least, exceeded the benefits…. We’ll be sharing more as we go so stay tuned!

Matt Phillips

Absolutely amazing to follow the evolution of Delos 2.0! Definitely a buildcam and the follow up Timelapse! 🔔🥃

Dan Moss

Congratulations! Very cool indeed, happy that we get to take this trip with you. A live cam would be a very nice touch.

Scott Leak

I’d love to see floorplans of the final design; deck plans and living spaces.

Sailing SV Delos
>>127594909

Hey Scott! Boats are really a collection of compromises…. And anybody that tells you one boat is best at everything just might be trying to sell you something! You certainly can’t please everyone and if you did try it would be disingenuous. No matter what you do or the choices you make some people will agree with you and some won’t. Thats just part of life; and thats what keeps it interesting. Remember when we went from party boat to family boat? Lots of people said Delos would never be the same. And it shouldn’t! I think sometimes people forget we’re not a scripted reality show. We’re just real people out here that happen to share our lives on Youtube. And as we change so must our passions and interests, and thus what we film. I can tell you that this is a real grass-roots effort that will require a lot of sweat equity and ingenuity to pull it off. No body is giving anybody anything and we’ll be sharing the cost for every scrap of metal and system that we buy. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Its those type of details and the information and decision behind each one is what I think is valuable and interesting. We’ll need to be crafty and rely on our experience of what has worked and hasnt over the first circumnavigation. I think once you see the reasoning and logic behind our decisions you will better understand where we’re coming from.

Roderick Bauer

Wow. Amazing news! I'd love to see the designs and layout for what you're planning. I'm a sailor/diver myself, so I'm super interested!

Roderick Bauer

Absolutely would love the webcam in the shop.

Greg Zivic
>>127597561

With all due respect all of these people who sail and share their lives with us do it their way. And those who watch and follow do so for various reasons but we all do so for what it makes us feel and think about. Would you not agree? So if LV chooses to have a tri built because Riley was geeked about it and there was some corporate sponsorship does it really change the beauty of watching a young growing family make choices and be vulnerable enough to show them to us? I’d love them to get rich and maybe not have to be on YouTube any longer. I’d bet they would too. And as for Delos you obviously know them and feel something for them. Maybe we should all understand that when we develop a mental relationship with people we don’t actually spend time sitting, drinking, and sharing real life with it doesn’t give permission to be so definitive and absolute in one’s opinion of their choices. Delos has been around the world, and at it for many years. They’re allowed to be tired, allowed to find a way to maybe live more comfortably, and find a way to show us where they want to go, not where we want them to

Scott C. Wise
>>127597561

Brian, I'm wondering, . . . if those wonderful people you've met, and made these plans with, built aluminum monohulls would you have said "But can you help us make a catamaran instead?", or would you have said "Hey, let's start building a new aluminum monohull!" ?

Andrew Berry

Exciting news. Would be keen to hear what you’re doing to make this the “Dive Edition”

Scott C. Wise
>>127597561

Greg Z, I agree with you. However, I first met Brian and Brady at the 2019 US Sailboat Show in Annapolis. I met them on the Hendrix Gin Barge. And while we were standing, not sitting, I did talk and drink (free) drinks with them. I've talked person to person with Brian, Brady and even Papa Delos and Karin. But mostly with Brian. I think Brian, himself, could tell you how much we have in common from memories of those conversations. There's that phrase - "Brother from another mother" which kind of fits here. Anyway, I'm miles - or kilometers(?) - closer to Brian and the spirit of SV Delos than a whole bunch of their typical YT followers. No doubt Brian could say there are lots of good friends he's made due to the SV Delos YT adventures. In the long run, what I'm trying to say is that, Brian can understand and appreciate even somewhat negative and/or critical comments when they are presented with respect.

John Hardie

Wonderful news for you! Building her in Brizvegas! Will have to come and help with the wiring when you get to it. Safe return to Delos❤️

Anne G Dørum

Exciting! Congratulations guys🤗Aluminum rocks😎😉

Colleen Balch

Congratulations!! This is going to be so exciting! Yes to all the building, yes to a live cam, yes to letting us come along for it all. 🤘 When I think about taking Sierra and yourselves as a family to higher northern latitudes, and I look at this design, I’m incredibly impressed at how PROTECTED all your active sailing activity is. It makes SO much sense. Dingy and liferaft aft, protected, immediately accessible without going out on the foredeck, incredible protection at the mast. And such an easy, accessible dive setup too. And it looks like the main cabin re-arrange gives Kazza (or whoever) a work station right next to the nav desk! I’d also do the same and sacrifice a little bunk space for more living space in the main cabin. 🙌💛 it all.

Andy Klevorn

Super smart to build it there. The thought of building it off-site seemed like a logistical and financial disaster. Having watched SLV, Winns and Doodles building their new boats I wouldn't go overboard on the build videos, we came for the escape of watching you guys SAIL in beautiful locations. You'll lose viewership, in my opinion if you go "full boat build" as content. Sail Delos 1.0, shoot and edit that, then go back and build for a while and give us an update. i haven't watched Winns or SLV much in the past year as I'll never build a million dollar boat. Just my two cents. Good luck, the design looks amazing and in a couple of years your second race against Parlay will be a more even battle.

Emily

I've just been watching a plethora of aluminum expedition boats since you last posted and I think that this is going to be THE BEST thing for you guys. Use the heat from circulated engine water for the northern latitudes. So exciting. Imagine hitting logs or icebergs in the northern latitudes (when you really didn't mean to) and they just glance off...what a relief.

Sailing Independence at Sea - Project Manaia

First of all: Congrats! a Live Feed would be crazy cool! There is plenty of easy ways to do it (Easiest is probably just setting up an amazon Alexa Show :D Personally super curious to learn how you decide on the interior design, as that is always a mix of trade offs on all ends (just like designing a boat all together! Will be great to follow along this! And again: Congrats you guys!

john eikevik

awesome, congrats! I wonder if the dinghy could be cantilevered out more to allow more space in the aft?!

Shannon Stone

Yeah! 🥂🎆🍾🥳!!! One of my first thoughts was how much fun Mormor and Sierra will have seeing wombats, 🦘, 🐦 cool birds!!! G’day Mates!!! Sorry I don’t care much about the build but my husband does :) What kind of fabrics, bathroom and kitchen will you have? FUN

Katie Litchfield

A shop-cam feed would be so cool. Personally, I am fascinated by the “why’s” behind things. I would truly enjoy hearing more about your design process, your thought processes, how you came to your decisions, and to see your fabrication as it goes on. Bring it on!! I’m also fascinated by the fact that you’ll be keeping Delos as you go through this fabrication process. That is something that not many other channels have been able to do. Does this mean that your primary channel content will continue to be sailing until much closer to the time of moving into the new boat? That kind of makes this whole process even more exciting.

Earle Writes

Oh my goodness. I am so excited for you all! Congratulations from the bottom of my heart. This is going to be so wonderful! All of my love to you, as always. 💖💖💖

SV Raven

Hell’s yeah, a multihull!! So excited for the whole fam!! More room for Sierra to run and explore! And I love the idea of the live build cam! Especially because of the time differences around the globe… congrats and fair winds!! 🌊💨

John Weiler

I'm definitely a vote for the shop cam

Rick

That sounds awesome! A camera in the shop would be really cool!

Michael Wilke

This is cool! I can‘t wait watching the cam from the workshop! Please keep us informed :-) Do you gonna send Sierra to school in Oz?

Kevin Houghton

Hybrid Drive (go places where gas motors aren't allowed) Massive battery capacity. Dont skimp on Solar or Wind. Check out what Leo's done (you probably already know) @Sampson Boat Company on the YT's. What about all those yummy Delos bow shots??

Gravytrain

Wow, great news! I like the shop webcam idea, just need a banner or something with time of next events when nothing is going on.

Gravytrain

Have you thought about hybrid engine designs that can regenerate while sailing?

Anne West

where are the berths? I assume they are in the hulls...where the windows are. But can we get any more info about the berths, specifically?

Anne West

sounds like a good opportunity to work on a sibling for Sierra...

Sailing SV Delos
>>127638895

Hey Katie! I am also fascinated by the "why" also so that will be a huge part of it. I think the details describing each system are really cool :) We've been pinching our pennies for just about 6 years now, which is one of the reasons why we can keep Delos. We'll probably sell her as we approach the end of the build but I don't think we'll need that money until the very end. We've had to be very patient but I think it will be worth it! We plan on Sailing Delos towards Australia. Right now we can fly in a day from Tahiti to Brisbane, and this will only get shorter as we move further west. So for now our plan is to split our time and go back and forth. Sometimes we might spend more time on the build, sometimes more time sailing. I guess it will just depend on how we're feeling and what the requirements for being onsite are. Imagine if we were able to raft up Delos 1.0 and Delos 2.0 and move all our stuff :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127645105

Hey Michael- Yes, we would put Sierra in School in Oz so that Karin can help me on the build. I think she would really enjoy it! I wonder if she would pick up an Aussie accent? :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127647279

Hey Kevin, Yes absolutely! Am currently specing out a very sweet hybrid drive. Some very interesting options out there.... I was just thinking of the Dolphin Cam. I think we can improve on our game here a bit with a purpose built camera track on one of the bows! But as for the typical sweet looking mono shots slicing through the water.... Well the jury is still out on that one!

SV Raven
>>127638895

That moving situation would be freaking awesome! Getting our “stuff” from Alaska to Grenada was wild! Lol

Sailing SV Delos
>>127650216

Hey Anne! Yes, we haven't shared very much info as of yet but I think a proper walk through of the accommodation and general arrangement is in order. Stand by :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127620153

Hey Colleen, yes very good insights! We have put a lot of thought into the layout.... There are quite a few improvements to the aft deck we are now designing. Including an outside galley which we are so excited about! More to come :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127626085

Thanks for your insight Andy, appreciate that and we look forward to continue sailing on Delos as we work our way towards Australia. I think you'll find the vides we are planning to be a different approach to what some others have done!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127576600

Kaz

Sailing SV Delos
>>127627386

Hey guys! It's always a tradeoff and compromise with boats in one way or another isn't it? Well luckily we have some basline things like berth sizes and galley arrangement from Delos that we know work well for us and we can carry over the new design. Since the entire boat is build in a 3D model we can also design the interior that way. There is a company in Brisbane that will 3D model the interior, render the images, and then CNC cut out and install all the cabinetry. Seems like it could be a pretty cool and modern way of doing things!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127576515

Sailing SV Delos
>>127629545

Hey John! Actually yes! So the dinghy mounts slide in and out (fore and aft) so that if we were to slide them all the way aft, which is where the lifting points from the roof are, the entire platform becomes a walk around extension (1 meter wide) and the aft area an island. We are planning an outside galley, BBQ, etc. back there. it's one of my favorite features we've designed in.

Sailing SV Delos
>>127637781

Hey Shannon, Yes Sierra is already practicing her "G'Day Mate" :). We have a whole lot of choices to make, just like building a house..... I will probably stick to the systems and mechanics and defer to Kazza on interior design choices :)

Thanks Tom, yes we are so happy that we can keep Delos until the very end of the project. Imagine rafting Delos 1.0 and Delos 2.0 together so we can move our stuff?!?!? :)

i guess while underway you want the dignity tucked in as much as possible. Very cool!

Ahoy David! One thing I'm super excited about is a Code 0 like sail. A big light air one that can fill in that gab between a normal genoa and a kite. It's something I wished we had on Delos quite often! There was just so much that went into the thought process, actually we're filming a video about this coming up listing all our pro's and con's. So stay tuned on that one! The systems design is going to be my favorite part of the build. I've already modified the design in numerous ways to facilitate compartments for batteries, electronics, cable runs, steering, etc. The batteries and inverters won't just be stuck under the settee because that's where there happens to be a little bit of space :). I actually think the storage might not be as much as Delos, but Delos is hard to beat with all the walls lined with deep lockers. But then we get no windows and kind of like living in a cave. One the upside we have 2 x 12 foot long bow sections that are set aside for storage so if we convert one of those to a pantry we might be close on storage. That's a very cool comparison to do though. She will definitely be fully insulated and heated! I've also spec'd out 6mm hull plates for that extra bump in safety when we venture into higher latitudes. As for the electric furlers I'm not sure. The system has worked incredibly well on Delos, but I think with all the lines lead to the forward cockpit if we have an electric winch up there it can be nearly the same. Still working that one out in my head though.... Hopefully more answers to come your way soon!

Renee Deemter

So exciting! I am very happy for all of you! A shop webcam would be amazing. Are we going to see any guest appearances of Senor Brady or Super Ryan helping with the build??? <3 you all! -Renee

Lot's of stats coming your way David :). For example the Aluminum itself will weigh approx 7 tons! and cost about $100K AUD :0

Ahoy Bonne, yes Captain Bob was spot on! I think one of the most beautiful things of the monohull is the built in energy release system of heeling over. It's a very cool example of a mechanical/physical feedback loop that has served well. Cats don't have that and excess energy needs to go somewhere..... Lot's more to come :)

I was really fascinated by the hybrid engines that are being installed on the "Gone with the Wynns" channel.

>>127647279

I'm sure you've been watching the "Wynn's", as they've been building their multi-hull.. They're about to set sail here this week, I believe...from China, bound for the Philippines.

David Hagler

What amazing news! Can't wait to watch your journey. I think you will have everything covered. If you can provide some insight into the sourcing of the materials near the boat builder and explain having someone building the rig vs. getting one sourced from a 'standard' vendor.

GordM

It will be amazing to follow you build your new boat! Most of the other sailing channels just seem to order a new cat from Asia and then deal with a bunch of toothing pains as they get used to it-which is ok, but following your build and doing work yourselves will be unique and make a nice change. I would be interested in any and all details of the build. Not so much the continuous feed, as like you say, that might be quiet for hours at a time. You have chosen a great design with a reputable naval architect. Good luck!

Capt. Dustin LaBorde

Definitely would love to hear about the design and alterations choice of rigging what rig y'all are going to go with what propulsion system diesel electric maybe? Plans for anti-fouling for aluminum will y'all be doing complex bending of the aluminum to keep a more rounded hull shape? So many different questions.

Pete and Nicole

Great design, she’s gonna be beautiful! Can you go with flush hatches on the aluminum hull? Also, how quickly do you think can you deploy the life raft with the dinghy in the cradle? Ultimately hope you never have to answer that question in real time! Congratulation’s!

Ahoy Mike, thanks for your support! I think the live camera would be very cool too. Well, we get 90 days by default and we can fly back to Delos in a single day. So one option we have is to spend 90 days on the build, then go back to Delos in French Polynesia for a bit, then return. We can also get a 1 year tourist visa but might hold off on that for now. Sierra definitely plays into the decision, regardless of whether we did this in Sweden or Australia I think getting her into pre-scool and kindegarden for a while could be a good thing. Delos should be sailing around, not tied to a dock so I expect when the build is almost finished we'll sell her to a salty soul to continue exploring :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127583138

Yes absolutely, a very cool project. For sure very different methods and materials but the end result still let's you cross oceans :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127583269

Yeah exactly Mike, glad you noticed that. We're still tweaking the back area to include an outside galley with sink, BBQ, fish filet station, etc. and with the dinghy on the hoist or the mounts slid out it will be almost like a center entertainment island at the stern. At least that's the plan :)

>>127589291

Hey Mark! Yes, you know I love my stats! For starters the 3D model is complete with every part. I can view it in Rhino or any other viewer. In all there is about 7 tons of raw aluminum . Now the feet of welds would sure be a cool one.... Thanks for the support and I'll try to get that web cam running for ya!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127594183

Well, there is a huge range in estimates. about 3K for the hull/deck and then the fitout is 2x3 times that. So we're looking at anywhere from 9-12K hours I think. We're gonna need some help!

Tom Caban
>>127594183

Well….i guess you don’t have to worry about content ideas for the channel for the next few years 🤓. But seriously, this is going to be fascinating to watch as you go through this process.

Paul Hegreness

I’m super interested in the specs. I’d like to know what your estimate will be of the build time, and $. Then break it down into welding, wiring, hvac, interior, “fan wall of shame build” etc I’d love to see a journal of your thoughts going into the project, then after thoughts when it’s all done and keeping a score board along the way. Also of course maintaining videos of all the good the bad and other challenges. Even learning how to weld etc would be super entertaining and funny!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127594643

Hey Victoria- I love your questions! I don't have all the answers right now but here are a few bits to I recently learned :). So Aluminum is approx 1/3 the weight of steel. If designed properly you can get an incredibly strong and light vessel. Often because Al is lighter then the design that would normally support the superstructure can be lighter, which means overall you are using less materials, just as strong, and at a fraction of the weight. There is a particular type of Al using, called 5083. It's the same that Maggie is made from and is very good at staying in the ocean for a long time without any protection. Actually the alloy itself creates an oxidation layer that protects itself from further corrosion! The type of welding we will use is Mig or Tig. Most of it will be double pulse MIG that is wire fed. It's cool because you hook a bottle of Argon gas up to the welder, and the gas flows along your handle with the wire and creates a bubble of inert Argon around the weld. So when it heats up no impurities from the atmosphere can get in there until it's cooled off enough. All the metal pieces are CNC but out of gigantic sheets and the entire boat is built in a 3D model. It's very good for custom designs as you can change it for the next build, where as building a mold only makes sense if you are going to build multiple copies of the same exact thing given the labor to create the mold in the first place. More to come!

Sadie Johnson

Are YOU going to be building it or is Dan/Mel building and you’ll be apprenticing? My brother and I were talking about aluminum hulls and whether or not they could use an Ocean Volt or other engine. Would the electricity provide issues with corrosion? Would LOVE to see a webcam?

Michael Wilke
>>127645105

That would definitely be super cute :-) Wish you all the best and can‘t wait to see your build update videos

Peggy Pot

I love the webcam idea for the shop! When I looked at the website with pictures of the boat (fabulous!), I noticed the drawing showed squared corners on the galley cabinets. Be sure and have those corners rounded. We sailed on a Lagoon in 2015, and those sharp corners left us all with bruises on our hips! This is so exciting for you guys! We can't wait to see it all manifest!

jpiland73

So AWESOME! I have looked at this company and their other designs. I love the all aluminum and shaft drive. So excited to see how this go for you guys!!

Thomas Riley

Looks nice! Going to be odd with the Delos tribe not on a 53 foot Amel though!

Simon Woodward

Hey that’s awesome guys!! It’ll be so satisfying building yourself, but so much easier with help 😆 You’ll love Brisbane! It’s a pretty chilled city and there’s lots to explore close by! Hit me up if you need any local advice from a Brissie local. Schools are great here by the way

Mike TopCat

It will be a great journey to watch the build on this side of the world (Southern California.) How much of the build are you going to do yourselves? How much help are you going to get so many questions? Are you going to have highbred diesel electrics.? Looks like a five-year project, looks like a crazy juggling for you all. Maybe grandma Momar would enjoy living in Australia with you and help take care of Sierra. Hopefully you will be able to cut this five-year project into three if you get some help? I’m sure you’ll be communicating with the “Odd” builders in France too. Best wishes and good luck.

So much about this is so cool - I can not wait for this project to start! Thank you for this awesome response!

Lance Daniels

Thanks for posting and sharing. Really thrilled for Delos and crew to hear your announcement.

Leo Sauermann

You turned into excited teenagers :-) And it's a Kazaa & Brian project, that gets communicated through the video, the excitement of doing something together

Leo Sauermann

Open the shop up for patreons to help you for free. Like holiday builds. I won't come , am in Austria, but working with you guys together building something, being filmed, seeing your build holiday as part of the bigger Delos picture sounds fun

Sailing SV Delos
>>127674922

Yes absolutely so many questions! But it's a lot of fun to figure out :). We haven't worked on selecting a rig yet although there is a rigger and mast maker (one of two in Australia) just down the street so that's nice! Current thoughts are to go with an electric/hybrid. One diesel in a hull for long range with a parallel electric and the other hull fully electric. Hopefully it will be able to offer the best of both worlds. There are complex curves in the design (not hard chines) so the shapes of the hull plates will be created with an English Wheel. Seems like black magic to me but I'm really looking forward to learning more!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127686975

Ahoy Pete! Actually too funny you mention flush hatches. Yes we can do it, it looks super cool! The downside is then you need to accomodate for drains to bring water away from the inset channels. I was just chatting with Dan yesterday about some options for doing this. I like the concept I just don't want to create complexity and possible water intrusion with drains needing to be run inside the hull. Always a tradeoff. We will see!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127725433

Hey Sadie- Dan will be the master builder, and Kazza and I will be apprentices. He will also have a team of 1-2 helpers besides myself and Kazza. I really don't know that much about metal work, that's Dan's expertise so he will lead on that part. But when it comes time for the systems and integration of everything during the fit out I'll be the lead because that's sort of my jam :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127734834

Hey Peggy! Yes, I noticed that too. I think the renders were just to show some sort of an interior but the design is defenitely not complete. We're trying to work with a company that 3-D models the entire interior, cabenets, etc. and then CNC cuts it out. If we can make it happen should be super cool!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127765819

Hey Simon! Awesome to have local knowledge :). We're going to need to rent a place for Many, June, and July. We'd like to find someplace with a short commute to Thornlands as the build will be in Redland City Marina. If you know of any neighborhoods that might be a good fit for us can you send us a private message here on Patreon? Thank you!

Sailing SV Delos
>>127808647

Ahoy Mike! Well kazza and I will be the apprentice helpers for the first phase (hull and deck construction). That's Dan's expertise so he's taking the lead there. It's over 3,000 hours of work just for that. Then the interior and fit out of systems I would guess to be 2-3 times that. I'll lead this phase as it's my area of expertise. But yeah, it's defenitely a multi-year project even with help! We'll have a team of three experienced fabricators for the first phase, and then it will be more on a subcontractor level for the systems and such. At least that's the current plans, I'm sure things will change and shift around as I learn more :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>127671237

Yes, I agree with you 100%. It's a totally different experience being involved directly. I'm really looking forward to that!

YES RE A WEBCAM in the shop

So cool and exciting! Yes on being able to see the process as it unfolds.
