Here’s a little photo dump from our trip to Brisbane where we got a 2 week crash course in Aluminum welding and boat building. It was awesome! We were welding 5083 alloy on a double pulsed MIG, wire fed with argon gas. Pretty sweet setup! As precicted Kazza has a smooth hand and was laying down some pretty sweet beads 🤘Towards the end there are some photos of Dan, Mel, and their family who welcomed us into their home. Dan (wearing blue shirt/pants next to Brian) is a boiler maker with 25 years experience and we will be his apprentices for the fabrication of Delos 2.0 😀 Stradbroke is a really cool family business and definitely Delos Tribe material

SV Mojo

Welding aluminum is a true art.

Bassman

Wifey and I need to do this!!

steve morrison

It will be amazing to watch this come together. Our best to you all

Israel Dayan

Here it comes.🧡🧡🧡 Success with 🇦🇺. ☀️ ⛵️. DELOS 2.0 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦

Cameron Cresswell

So cool, you're basically in my backyard! It would be great to organise some meet-ups when you're in town.

Mark Gumprecht

Wow, there are space aliens in this post! Kazza the welder, what a woman!

Gerry Lane

Welding was my favorite shop classes in high school. Have fun

Spencer Norby

Those really are some sweet beads you've both produced. I expect to hear some real techie talk regarding all the settings and stuff you have both learned. A question if possible though it may be too early yet. Will the sheet forming be done at the cutting factory, or will you be forming everything over frames?

Sailing SV Delos

Big ‘ole agriculture style english wheel borrowed from a mate…. last hull was 5mm and ours will be 6mm so should be fun. apparently the wheel did another 6mm hull so it is beefy enough we hope! Also templates will be CNC cut to form to at sane time as frames. I am fascinated by this process 😀

Spencer Norby

Wow, that was a fast reply. Thank you very much. The English wheel will be fascinating to watch. Adam Savage has used them to make knights' armor. I have a feeling his was more than a bit smaller than what your will be using for your forming work. This is going to amazing to see. I wonder if Sierra will come down with an Aussie accent by the time you sail away.

Lawrence Forbach

That great to hear about your Boilermaker friend teaching you. I’m a Retired Union Boilermaker Local 83, KCMO

Michael and Phyllis Selby

So Sierra is going to learn mig welding before she learns algebra. As my Aussie friends say, “good onya cobber.”

Kyall

On ya guys! So good to play a part in your own build.

William Flower

This is so cool to see! I spent a dozen years in machine shops and even more inspecting, and one of my brothers has dozens of years welding under his belt, so much of what you are saying makes sense. Knowing that your lives will be depending on these welds will cause you to learn how to inspect for defects and get them right!

William Flower

A married couple that welds together is double bonded!❤😎

Colleen Balch

This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. ;)

Katie Litchfield

Is it true? Kazza is so scary good at welding that she nearly scared the pants off of herself? In all seriousness, I’m not surprised by Kazza being able to drop some sweet beads. She’s got an artist’s steady touch which translates well through the welder’s tip. Aluminum can be a real beast to weld and you’re both clearly up to the task of taming that beast. Speaking of magic- how do you manage to capture the overnight airport snooze in such an endearingly accurate way?

Thomas Lengel

Wow It starts me thinking of the whole world of welding! Im so happy for you!

Scott C. Wise

Weld, weld , weld, now what's this all about? What I want to know is which are you making this boat out of A-lumi-num or Al-u-mini-um? There's a big difference, you know.

David Walsh

Looks like a great time; except for that last shot in the airport.

Jeff Mack

As if you two weren't already badass enough. LOL

Rick Doner

Can't wait to see the build start. Have you decided electric or diesel yet?

SV Raven

My grandfather welded, My father was learning from him, and man do I wanna learn! So much you can do! Even building a boat!! You guys are the best! And you deserve it so so so much. Also the pic at the end waiting for your Tahiti flight is the best. 🤪

Andrew McLean

I think Plucky is learning a lot too. Hope it all goes well, looking forward to seeing it come together.

Lon Pribble

I am sooo ready for some Brian and Kazza boat build videos! Still hoping to see some "Brian's Abode" videos of the place in Sweden.

Mark Long

This looks so fun! Would love to do this.

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha thanks Katie, yeah that was a 5 minute shopping spree and that's the best we could do on short notice. We barely had any pants to start with, and absolutely none suitable for welding :)

Katie Litchfield

I was shocked to see y’all in pants….(wait… that sounds so wrong…😳😅) I was also impressed by the ingenuity of zippering the ventilator belt into the fly of the jeans to hold the jeans up and keep the belt from interfering. Win/win!

Gerry Lane

Hey Brian, I sent you a note about me trying to purchase an Amel Santorin in Indonesia. If you get a chance to look at it I'd be grateful 🙏. Later gator.

William Flower

From what I've gathered through the years, welding on the bottom side of a structure will add a whole new set of cuss words to your vocabulary. It's the worst! Once you master that one, you can take on anything.

John Hardie

Keep it up Kazza, we need more women in the trades ❤️👍

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yes that was my worst weld position for sure... Because of that the hulls are actually built upside down, so all the welding on the outside for the hull plates, frames, etc. are done in a normal position. Then after that is complete the whole thing is flipped over and you weld the other side and continue with the cabin top . That will be a crazy day to flip her over!
