Happy Canada Day & Independence Day Week everybody! A couple programming notes:- NEXT Tuesday I'm uploading Cameoh-No #4. I PROMISE.- Despite it being the 4th of July on Saturday, I'm uploading a NEW video this weekend! Probably a bad idea views-wise, but oh well, it's a really funny video, and very topical. You'll get it on Friday as always.

Anyway, on with this week's bonus, one I can relate to quite a bit as a "music critic" (sort of) who has had run-ins with those he's critiqued (Hayley Williams, MISSIO, BBNo$, Manika... am I missing anyone?) Enjoy!

Critics... the bane of all artists' existence! As someone who critiques, and who has BEEN critiqued, AND who has had musicians respond to his critiques, Buckley looks at the recent Internet feud between Halsey (the "You & I" singer) and Anthony Fantano ("The Needle Drop" music critic). Certainly artists have every right to respond to critics, but... should they?

Fantano vs Halsey: Critics vs Artists (Extra Dose)

Well, i should be pissed if on the Album i talk about my Cancer and someone talk Main Charakter Syndrome.

A Dose of Buckley

In at least this clip, he doesn't reference any lyrics where she talks about cancer at all. If she's alluding to it or whatever, or you're expected to just know... that's not REALLY a critic's fault. (although it's funny, I often get criticized for talking about the personal business of artists when I review their songs, but clearly I guess it's relevant and you CAN'T review their work on its own merits).

This is making me wonder how a back and forth between Fantano and Buckley would shake out 🤣

In fairness, I think Fantano is more so known for being annoying and unlikable than his actual music reviews. If all the people who talked about how much they don’t like him ignored him like the rest of us, he would’ve faded into obscurity long ago.

Ash Archer

Hardly surprising… Halsey has always had this emotionally regressed, histrionic attitude about her. Very thin-skinned.

A Dose of Buckley

Yeah it's interesting because like I said, I don't watch him... But he gets referenced on PopHeads all the time and often negatively, and I think "why do you watch him? Just ignore him like you ignore me and he won't be relevant anymore!"

Melinda sordino

halsey being like "i had cancer so you can't criticize me!!" is so ridiculous and pathetic. cancer doesn't make your music not suck and you shouldn't expect to be immune from criticism. don't release an album if you can't take criticism

So that's the "smarmy guy in a turtleneck". I was wondering for years who you were referring to. Can't remember which video you said that in though.

Oddly enough, ToddinShadows and Fantano got into a collab in late 2025, though it's more of an interview to Todd than a whole discussion on music

A Dose of Buckley

Perhaps he'd wonder why I don't want to be taken seriously as a critic and I'd wonder why he does. I'd probably ask him what he feels his function is as a critic, given that music is effectively free (you can listen to any song in the world for free on YouTube or Spotify with ads) meaning anyone can form their own opinion rather than use a critic to decide whether or not to buy something/see a movie/etc.

Mentioning Manika changing her title reminded me of the time Hayley Williams had a go at you (on twitter maybe?) years and years ago about a comment you made in an old video. She had to have gone quite out of her way back then to find your channel. Sticks with me for some reason. Glad to see your persuasion spreading Buckley, however little.

Yeah this is basically “Two Retards Fighting: Music Edition” but I’m still rooting for Halsey. Fantano’s “main character syndrome” comment was what made me, someone who hated “New Americana” and actively avoided Halsey, unsubscribe. That’s how badly Fantano fucked up when he dropped his review 2 years ago. Even people who hated or were indifferent to Halsey were going “what the fuck is wrong with you?” Because it doesn’t matter if his comment was referring to the draft, the album as a whole, or Halsey herself. It doesn’t matter if her lyrics are 17yo tumblr cringe. It doesn’t even matter if her album is objectively terrible. Coming to the conclusion that it’s “main character syndrome” is psychopath behavior.

Halsey going after todd in the shadows some years ago should have gave us a clue lolol

Ron

Dear Halsey, your music was mid. STFU!!!!

Ron

Cause she takes herself way too seriously. Like trick you are NOT Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, or any soul female act from the 50s or 60s.
