My comics get stolen a lot. I’m not alone - this happens to a lot of artists. I drew this mainly as a way to work through some frustrations I've had lately.

A few days ago, a Facebook business page took a few of my cartoons and removed my signature and URL -- and added their own URL. This happens from time to time and it drives me crazy.

A lot of people don't know any better - they assume that if something is online, it's free for them to use however they want. I try to educate people about this and most mean well, but there are some people out there who are like the Grinch.

I realize this comic likely won't resonate with most people, but I had to do it. It was cathartic. :)

Bummer. Someone once stole my music composition, but at least I wasn't trying to make money from it. (My cartoon art is apparently not good enough to steal.) I take it that "more" is supposed to be "morning."

Nancy DeStadio

Sadly there are those who do not understand the difference between public domain and artist license copyright.

Julie Rentz

I share your comics a lot. But I always make sure that your name is on there

Scott Metzger

Corrected. And sorry to hear about your music composition being stolen. It sucks even if you're not trying to make money from it

Stephen Gilberg

In truth, I was so flattered I didn't bother to report it. Now, if the thief were trying to make money...

Christine

Me too, what Julie said, usually with the addition of a remark about what a great talent you are/how much I love your work. So happens that just the other day I saw a group post with some of your cartoons and I commented to them that they should have named the source of the inspiration as they were bringing up the subject of cats and Christmas trees. I was about to report them, but then I saw your signature was not cut off the cartoon as I first thought. Hissss to those that know better. I swipe a paw at those thieves.

Scott Metzger

Thanks, that’s kind of you to say. Most people are cool, don’t know any better and I understand that. I don’t report people unless I have to. That’s the nuclear option and I only do that for people who prove to be jerks.

Karen Jagielo

That would make me crazy! And it does make me upset for you. How obnoxiously rude! You are such a great artist and a genuinely great person. I tell people all the time about you and your comics. And I like to brag about winning one of your caption contests! 🙃 Absolutely love your cat cartoon books! As for those who stole your comics, I believe in "what goes around, comes around" 😡

Scott Metzger

Oh yeah - the caption contest! Need to do another one here. And thank you for the nice words. :)

I agree completely, but doesn't your use of "The Grinch" character drawing sort of contradict your point? Again, artistic rights must be supported, but I would be interested in a sincere conversation about my question. Just asking, as I am not sure about legal issues or rights in that regard, and when things become public domain. I know Grinch is getting close to 75 years old, isn't that the time frame for public domain?

Scott Metzger

Hi Alena - in copyright law, parody is considered fair use, so it's OK to use the Grinch in this way. If there were an official Grinch logo and I used it - that would be copyright infringement. As long as you’re not copying the original work word-for-word and it's a clear parody, it's fine. Years ago I took a course on copyright law and the lawyer who taught the class was awesome and super knowledgeable. At one point, he talked about Disney and how ruthless they are when people infringe on their copyrights. He said, "One thing you all should remember is this: Don't f#$k with Disney." It got a big laugh.

Miss Allayneous

Thank you so much for that explanation! I used to be a cake decorator, and we were always cautioned about infringing on rights in use of characters in that way.

I'm a hobby photographer and used to share my photos on Facebook and Flickr etc. Not anymore - so many of them get stolen and put onto those free wallpaper sites. It's so frustrating when people use the "it's on the internet so it must be free" logic.

I once used stickers on a photo of my cat to make it into a birthday greeting and saw someone I did not know use it on a friend's page for her birthday! That means it went through at least one other person to get to her but we had no friends in common. I'm sure this also happens with your art - one person takes your signature off and it gets passed around that way :(. I always make a comments with credit when I see one of your comics not credited.

Scott Metzger

That’s strange - did you post the stickers on social or a website? Thank you for commenting when comics get cropped.

Lisa Krolasik

I took a photo of her and added stickers using the Pizap app for a birthday hat, balloons, and the words Happy Birthday for her birthday and posted it on my Facebook. Someone downloaded it and it must have been passed around. It didn't bother me as I don't make a living from it! But it was weird!
