Back in 2007, I developed a comic strip called "Stewart," about a dim-witted bison named Stewart. He grew up in the bison paddock Golden Gate park and one day decided to live with the humans in San Francisco. That's the strip in a nutshell (I've included some samples).

One newspaper syndicate was interested in picking Stewart up for syndication. I sent them about 100 samples over several months, but ultimately it didn't pan out. My daughter was born in 2008, just a couple days before I got news from the syndicate that they were going to pass on Stewart. The joy of my daughter being born took the sting out of that rejection.

One of the characters in Stewart was a cat named Sam. I liked that character and he likely planted the seed in me focusing more on cat comics.

A very interesting concept. I like it. Kind of gives me a BoJack Horseman vibe.

Scott Metzger

Thanks, it was fun to draw. It got weirder as it went on.

LeadfootNH

Weird is fun. Is is possible to release more of them as Patreon only content?

I love the idea of the guide dogs dragging their owners into an animal bar. And hearing what guide dogs would really like to do and what they think. That's hilarious. These are great.

I personally love the "Stewart" comic strips you just posted. Really very funny 😁 -- and I've had to do the "temp" bit many times myself, because being a musician hasn't always been a huge money maker! 😄

Scott Metzger

Stewart as a temp was loosely based on my own temping experience when I was 23. It was the worst temp job ever

Nancy DeStadio

I can see the beginning of your current work in Stewart. I believe you are correct in the process leading you to cats as fodder for your success. The old saying “try, try again!”

Myrna Neuberg

I can relate. I've had some fairly gruesome temp experiences myself -- thankfully not since 2014. 😄

Lorraine Strickland

Hilarious! I also love how Stewart is a Libra. Me too. And my horoscopes usually read the same way so I don’t read them.😁 Wish you would have continued the strip. Love it!

Bobbie Gardner

I enjoyed all of these, but I have to admit the cat strip is my favorite. I can't imagine how many cats endure those make-believe tea parties! I would love to see that published in one of your posts.

Susan M

I can’t imagine how you came up with that concept, but it works. Next time I visit the bison paddock I’ll think of Stewart. The way you manage to put animals into human situations and yet maintain their essential cat-ness, dog-ness, and bison-ness is amazing.

Karen Jagielo

I love this so much! The landlady who kept insisting he was a buffalo. 😉 😂 All of the strips are so so cute! I can't believe the publisher turned it down, but I am so glad you were "inspired" to create cat cartoons! 😊

Shirley P

I love these! Are there more lurking somewhere?

You can tell this was a while ago, because I don't see anyone preventing charges for small amounts anymore. (Today I had to use a credit card to buy bottled water from a stadium vendor; cash wasn't allowed.) I like the snake.

Scott Metzger

Yeah this strip was definitely a stepping stone. “Try, try again” indeed!

Scott Metzger

Glad you like it! I enjoyed doing it and stopped because the syndicate wasn’t interested and then my baby took up a lot of time. It was fun while it lasted and I have about 100 of these strips so maybe I’ll post more

Scott Metzger

I could turn that into a one panel comic. It might work

Scott Metzger

Thanks. I lived in San Francisco for almost 14 years and loved the bison paddock. It’s such a cool part of Golden Gate Park.

Scott Metzger

Thanks! It was disappointing the syndicate never picked it up but, looking back, I’m so glad it didn’t happen. This strip was a stepping stone, but it was fun to do at the time

Scott Metzger

Yeah, I have a bunch more. I’ll post more later. Glad you like them!

Scott Metzger

You can also tell this was a long time ago because the cat is reading the newspaper! 2008 was about the last time I subscribed to a newspaper. Gary the snake became a main character later on.

Paula Myrick

These are fun! I’d love to see Stewart added to the rotation!🤗

Wendy S. Katz

I love them! Especially the tie getting progressively shorter as the days go by. Also for a sometimes homesick Bay Arean, the nostalgia of the Transamerica Pyramid outside the office window.

Scott Metzger

Back when the Transamerica Pyramid was the most prominent building in the SF skyline. Now it’s that damn Salesforce Tower. Glad you like the comics!

Laurie Stoker

How did I not know about the bison paddock in the park? I've lived in the Bay Area my entire, very long, life! I may try to get over there to see it if I can.

Scott Metzger

I'm a Bay Area native too and I knew nothing about it until I moved to SF and stumbled upon it. I was on a run in the park and I literally did a double take - are those BISON??

Sarah Glesmann

Um I could NOT love Stewart more!! This comic is hilarious and adorable!! 😍

AlienSparkle

I ❤️ Stewart! Have you ever considered doing something like a Kickstarter and selling books/booklets of your work?

Scott Metzger

Glad you enjoyed it! I have thought about Kickstarter 🙂
