From 2005-2007, I did a comic strip called "Tree." I drew this strip right before I drew Stewart. Here are some samples.

"Tree" was about a sarcastic, slightly dim pine tree, named Tree, who worked at Starbucks and hung with his two best friends, Wyatt and Claire. (I put Claire in the Stewart strip because I liked her character and thought she'd be a good love interest for a bison.)

"Tree" and "Stewart" had similar "fish out of water" themes - both main characters were trying to live with humans and both weren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

One syndicate editor loved Tree and thought it was original, but he told me it was too weird for newspaper syndication.

I loved drawing Stewart, but Tree was my favorite.

Oh that's awesome! Tree is brilliant

Stephen Gilberg

Your editor had a point: Putting Tree on dead trees would be awkward.

Nancy DeStadio

Cats love trees maybe there’s a confluence there. I love Trees sarcasm.

Nancy DeStadio

That’s wonderful insight. It could be awkward for both parties

Melissa

😂Of COURSE Tree is dim without any lights on him! 🤯 (Also, who WOULDN'T be a good love interest for a bison? Regardless of mate that's destined to be pure romance either way). He sure did a stellar job of sweet-talking Haiku guy into that refill. Too bad he didn't do so while donning the "tank top" though. 🎶"I can see clearly now Elaine is gone"🎶 Don't know if this was at all intended but I now feel compelled to have to watch "Friends" and specifically The One Where Joey Speaks French.

Lorraine Strickland

I especially love the bit at the French restaurant. 😂 Hilarious. Actually all of it was great. Tree really rocks adorable clueless! 😁

Scott Metzger

He started off *very* sarcastic but mellowed a bit as the strip went on. He was kind of a lovable jerk 🙂

Scott Metzger

Haha I love that episode. Did you know Matt LeBlanc is actually fluent in French? My teenage daughter loves Friends and she told me that

Bert Driehuis

It's really nice to see where you came from! Loved reading both comics, pity syndication didn't work out...

Scott Metzger

At the time I was disappointed syndication didn’t work out but now I’m glad it didn’t. I think newspaper syndication would’ve burned me out

Melissa

I did NOT!

Karen Jagielo

I love Tree! How sweet! Love all of it! Still happy with the direction you went to. Maybe Tree and Stewart could make a few "cameo" appearances in some of your cat and dog strips. :)

Myrna Neuberg

I adore "weird" -- so I think "Tree" is brilliant! 😁

Myrna Neuberg

By the way, I LOVED the Dexys Midnight Runners reference! 🤣

Mary Ann Beaven

Thank you Myrna, I was puzzling over the Come on Eileen reference in the joke😀…Tree is hilarious!

Scott Metzger

Thanks - glad you liked it! Gary the snake (from the Stewart strip) has made some guest appearances in a few single panel comics over the past few years

Paula Myrick

I think they’re all clever, but I can see how some of the humor was probably a little too clever for the general public. PS: To me, a cow wearing lipstick is just inherently funnier than a pine tree (even one wearing a sports bra).🤣

Scott Metzger

Probably too weird for the general public. That’s what a few execs told me back then anyway. I did like Claire, though. When someone would annoy her, she’d say “You wanna taste hoof?!” 😆

Bruce Herbert

Both "Tree" and "Stewart" are great. Better drawn and much funnier than many of the comics carried by the comics syndicates. I think "Stewart" might have a little longer runway. More potential gags from a bison than from a tree.
