Behind the Scenes: Rain Check’s older ending revised (but still not right) (Patreon)

I was really angry. Like really really angry, about being told that my original plan for Rain Check wasn’t good enough. I tried to be stubborn, and say it couldn’t be changed. So this version is the version where Souppy did his best to just alter dialogue, because I put my foot down and I was refusing to have it redrawn.
Obviously I changed my mind later.. because I could tell Souppy’s editing didn’t have much of his energy backing it up. He was essentially polishing a turd. I don’t want a turd to be polished, I wanted my comic to be good! Souppy is the biggest Paisy shipper I know, he cares way more about this pairing.
So if he isn’t feeling his ultimate OTP, then I must have done something wrong! I eventually caved anyway and changed it, of course, that’s the issue with me. This is part of the reason I stay away from places like discord and don’t vanity-search. A person will demand a change in the comic, and even if I disagree with it, even if I think it’s a frankly very stupid suggestion, I’ll be compelled to follow the advice and change it anyway. My people-pleasing disease is pretty terminal. Volume One suffered this problem, because I was bending over backwards for people who both wanted the drama, and people who hated the drama and just wanted slapstick. I had to learn I can’t please everyone, and I must believe in myself, and the people in my life that I trust.
Luckily I cave to Souppy who often tends to be right about these things. That’s why I trust him to be my editor!
But for this chapter, I didn’t. I was angry. I didn't want to drop like 20 pages I'd worked on for so long. So here’s some attempts to fix it, including dialogue changes different from the original version. None of these was published!
This reveals that I was planning for Paulo and Daisy to get together before the new year! Isn’t that crazy? Christmas break??? Wow! At this point I didn’t have New Years Resolution planned out, good thing I waited! The interaction between Mike and Paulo wouldn’t have happened if I got them together at this point in time!
Souppy wanted Daisy to not strictly feel rejected by Paulo because of her looks. He thought that would be too shallow, she was depressed because he couldn’t love her as in her. So this dialogue is a lot more.. definitely sad.
I made Daisy wayyy more depressed here, which is a little closer to the final version, as opposed to having her puppy dog affection for Paulo like she did with Mike. And it goes over Paulo’s head.
I didn’t mention it before, but in the other Patreon post about this, I didn’t cite that Paulo is talking about Christmas! See, this was supposed to happen before Christmas break!! It’s so weird!
Still a much mopier Daisy. The rest is pretty much the same as was seen before. So no point to show it again!
At this point I was sketching out the new idea begrudgingly, after knowing that Souppy wasn’t feeling the original Rain Check.
It was actually thanks to Lily we got a new idea! I remember still, we had dinner with her, and I was really stewing. I didn’t want to change things, and if I did, then to what? I don’t have a clue what to do! I had original Rain Check planned for years! I was angry and didn’t even want to have Paisy happen at that point, I was feeling way too bitter.
Lily suggested something like bringing in Tess to have a heart-to-heart with Daisy, which turned into me thinking about getting Lucy to do it.. I didn’t want to change that much, I didn’t want to distract the story with Tess.. and Lucy was already there. She’s good for the job.
More and more ideas started pouring out of me.. what if Daisy doesn’t suck up to Paulo and is instead super depressed to the point of not even wanting to look at him, and Lucy has to tough love her a little? And that makes Daisy burst and Paulo overhears? What if she runs out and he chases after her?
I think Souppy really wanted Paulo to fight for Daisy, he didn’t like that the original concept is all about Daisy seeking validation from a bewildered Paulo.. instead Paulo finds out, and he springs into action.
Look! I finally solidified that this takes place after new years! At this point I finally planned out New Years Resolution, so that dialogue had to change.
What a mopey little bitch lol, he and Daisy are meant to be
Daisy’s angst was a lot more about physical appearance and not much else. I think Souppy didn’t want Daisy’s insecurity to be so shallow, I guess because it implies Paulo is shallow and that he MUST validate her hotness to love her.. when that isn’t really the point of Paulo and Daisy’s love for each other .
lol, lucy didn’t need to speak
This sequence got a big argument between Souppy and me. Again, Souppy doesn’t want Paulo to date Daisy because she’s physically attractive to him! She already is! Her entire being is attractive to Paulo! So him remarking her looking pretty.. that wasn’t what he wanted. He didn’t want that validation for Daisy, he doesn’t think that’s what should be focused on. So he wanted Paulo to just think she’s fucking cute. I still don’t get it, maybe it’s a man thing. I trust him on this feeling lol
And that’s it for this chapter!
