R.I.P. Tim Curry

John Thaw became fascinated by Gorilla Monsoon following the wrestler’s death in October 1999, after reading an obituary which revealed something about Monsoon that Thaw had never known. Before becoming the enormous Gorilla Monsoon, Robert Marella had wrestled under his own name as Gino Marella, an Italian-American babyface whose early appearances played upon his Italian heritage. Marella was also known for singing, something strikingly at odds with the lumbering, intimidating character that would eventually make him famous. According to the story, that contrast appealed enormously to Thaw: the idea that underneath one of professional wrestling’s great monsters was this cultured, theatrical Italian-American performer whom virtually everybody had forgotten. At the time, Thaw was preparing what would become the final Inspector Morse, The Remorseful Day. Music had always been fundamental to Morse's character, and Thaw supposedly suggested that the episode contain a tiny musical acknowledgement of Marella. One that would mean absolutely nothing to the audience unless they knew the story behind it. The result was the wonderfully peculiar exchange in which Lewis is listening to Wagner's Parsifal, conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch, and struggles with the conductor's formidable surname. Morse immediately corrects him. On the surface, it is simply another demonstration of Morse's musical knowledge and his slightly exasperated superiority over Lewis. But according to the story, there were two private references to Marella hidden in the exchange. The first was the pronunciation. Lewis's version deliberately echoed the American pronunciation, while Morse supplies the more precise European pronunciation. The second reference was far more personal. Wagner's Parsifal, particularly the celebrated recording conducted by Knappertsbusch, was said to have been one of Marella's favourite pieces of music. Thaw therefore wasn't simply inserting an arbitrary piece of opera. The music itself was the tribute. And Parsifal returns at the end of the episode, giving the reference an additional poignancy as Morse himself reaches the end. So one of the final musical moments in Inspector Morse supposedly carries an extraordinarily unlikely second meaning: John Thaw quietly acknowledging the cultured, singing Gino Marella who had spent most of his life hidden beneath Gorilla Monsoon.

Aww… call me a philistine but I think Headlock on my Heart is a banger! In other public service announcements, it’s Stan Hansen’s birthday on the 29th. Do yourself a favour and search ‘Stan Hansen lariat’ on YouTube. Some wonderful person has put together a five minute compilation of Stan hitting lariat after lariat.

A Dolly Parton wrestling link: before death match wrestler Tank’s matches his manager The Rev always lauds Dolly as one of the Tennessee treasures, along with Tank of course

Tim Curry did play the Joker! He recorded the first couple of episodes of Batman: The Animated Series but left the role because he had bronchitis. He was then replaced by Mark Hamill.

I'm looking forward to all in (and would love to bump into the M&P) as a British wrestling fan the idea I would be able to go to 3 stadium level American wrestling ppvs without traveling more than 2 hrs from my house is a pure luxury British fans are unlikely to ever get again

wrestleme thursday on my morning commute absolutely unmatched

Chris Dale

Thursday really is one of the better days of the week. Nearly the weekend and a big old dose of Marc and Pete saying something outrageous. Wish I was going to All In this weekend but fate has conspired against me so hope everyone has a good time!

Apparently Taker is chanting very badly mispronounced Irish in his Ministry theme song. Russo lifted it from some movie. Admittedly my Irish isn't great but if that really is Gaeilge I can't make out a single word.

From Popbitch Tim Curry's gak dealer in the 80s was a member of the string section in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ryan Hald

Really enjoyed the analysis of these matches.

God bless you Pete, my wife and I are both huge Gabriel Knight fans as soon as curry passed we started doing the “what do you know about… voodoo” Sorry that’s fuck all to do with wrestling 😂

Rob Nancekivell

The next time someone asks me why I like wrestling, I'll simply tell them that you can correctly sum a match up with 'I'm going to break you leg and I'm going to sacrifice your sister'.

Love me a bit of '99 WWE
