Possibly the most controversial a la Mode we've ever done, because we both liked a movie?

We discuss the movie, grumpy old Will Smith, and why in the world of Bright, Shrek is The Song of the South.

Enjoy!

You guys are putting way too much emphasis on “Oh man, critics wanted to hate this movie.” The bigger problem has been the opposite. Casual reaction, especially that on Reddit, Rotten Tomatoes, and Twitter, is overwhelmingly positive to the point where they think that critics are being paid off or it’s a conspiracy against Netflix to shut down this movie. There are loads of people who are trying to say Bright is not about racism when the movie is very intentionally about racism. (Whether how clever it’s done is YMMV) I think people are reveling more in the fact they can use this movie to hate on critics or as a way of saying “You were too sensitive/offended to like this movie.” I also have to point out this quote from the audio: “This is a positivity movie.” What the hell?! In a movie with bitter Will Smith, nothing being solved, open police racism/corruption, a gritty washed out color palate, and a baby getting killed? The movie has such an ugly perspective towards everything. Ayer doesn’t really understand what can be done when comparing fantasy races with real life allegory, he just wanted to make Training Day again. I’m not sure how you watch some of his gritty action dramas to cheer up. I found the movie to be too tonally inconsistent to really be fun. And just a reminder, Sabotage was him doing another gritty action movie and that is considered his worst. You guys give so much credit to Will Smith who was just smugging it through the movie when Joel Edgerton was so carrying this movie on his shoulders. (People should have really noticed how great he was in Loving) Also, I kinda see where Cargill is coming from comparing the Orcs to Jews just from the lore aspect, but they are treated straight up like Black/Mexican inner-city gangbangers for the rest of the movie. Even to the point where they get real human gangbangers to make a point about it. Seriously, Street Kings (a movie Junkfood Cinema should have covered much earlier is somehow less silly and more fun than anything Bright could ever be.

I did not hate Bright... but it totally wasted an opportunity for fun urban fantasy by sandwiching shallow race and class allegory with generic corrupt cop action. The latter works well enough (and the fantasy elements do spice it up nicely), but they've put so little effort into the fantasy world-building they might as well have not bothered.

I have to admit, the Comedy Film Nerds review of the film really soured me on the possibility of wanting to see it, but maybe this episode will turn me around. (on the positive side, I still think CFN gave the best defense/discussion on The Last Jedi)

If your are talking about who I think you are, the thing I liked about the one guy betraying them is that he doesn't do it for selfish reasons like the dirty cops that Smith has to take out. He was just doing his job. That's why Smith is pissed that the corrupt cops are being honored alongside that other guy. Even though he almost fucked them over, he was still a good cop.

Well ... I'm glad you guys liked it.
