really enjoyed this and appreciate james talking about this. I think that a lot of autistic ppl struggle w navigating the world because as humans we “assume” quite a lot and often don’t use language as precisely as we think we do whereas language or specificity is so key for autistic ppl. Can seem like OCD but james is expressing autistic traits. I think a lot of james’ frustration re compromise is actually so deeply manifesting due to lack of understanding. there is an extent to which it will always be difficult for neuro spicy ppl to navigate the world but having an understanding of self and having ppl around you that also understand that is the first step. I don’t think the takeaway is learning to let go in the way that the non-autistic ppl around him does, he has to learn what works for him! Trying to use the same frameworks as non-autistic ppl will lead to more frustration. And esp when it comes to romantic relationships where the expectation is to be automatically understood, “seen” like no one else sees you and is so unrealistic! The reality is you learn the other person - it is a process of hard work and empathy, and at the heart of that is communication (that as an autistic person, needs to be in a more personalised way, not the same as others - and that is okay!!) Having a partner who understands the small things e.g a compromise acc being a sacrifice, will hopefully mean overall, it will get easier to let other things go that james feels he “needs to” because fundamentally, he is better understood and doesnt feel he is always losing/ sacrificing. and the first step is understanding self. From your friendly neighbourhood therapist🫶🏾 hopefully this is reassuring and open to giving anymore guidance/ advice because seems like there is a lot there, but would also suggest an autism coach!!

Over 500 episodes - no one is going to like every single one and that's okay. I really appreciated this episode! My best friend (ADHD) unofficially diagnosed me with autism and I feel like it brought so much light to things I've struggled with for YEARS thinking something was wrong with me! James is speaking and I feel like he's describing my exact thought processes. Autism affects every part of your life and requires a LOT of patience and communication with the people around you. It doesn't go away but if you put in the work you'll definitely learn how to manage your thought processes and emotions in a way that helps you to function better in society. THANKS FOR YOUR VULNERABILITY ❤️

I would be annoyed that someone from work is contacting you while you are on holiday.

Ngl I thought James was chatting shit for a bit. But as I’m listening I hear it and it’s quality topic of conversation to discuss with oneself or anyone.

Am I trippin or did they skip from MHA straight to some other show

Key

James you should think back to your moms behavior when you were younger and you may see some similarities (basing this off of stories of her in past episodes)

James is right! Compromise is to meet in the middle! Not take it in turns to sacrifice 😅 If you’re having to go back to the room to reply that’s taking more time away from your partner. If work brings you happiness and excitement then why would she take that away from you or expect you to sit an an anxious state being unable to reply as you naturally want to do or having to process frustration. That’s gonna have a bigger impact on the holiday! I’m with James. 100%

It's empathy you're missing. Very common, not just amongst those on the spectrum but also it's not a natural ability. Great self awareness

Regarding your partner being upset......from my personal experience my partner would be annoyed because she knows how much I work. The hoilday is to deattach completely. The industry I work in somethings I can't avoid work which she understands but she believes in totally shutting off.

For those who question if REM is marrried… his answer w/ James’s question should be concrete. Regarding James question over all.. I have a deeper answer that’s just too much to type. But it does boil down to one simple concept. He is ready for companionship, but not relational partnership…. The work in a partnership is where most people have trouble managing.
