A prenup is different depending on the person. Its usually says that you both just leave the marriage with what you entered it with. A lot of women married because they legit didnt have other rights unless they got married. Now that marriage isnt necessary its happening less and less.

Sierra

This could be a hot take but I feel as though the reason so many people are getting divorced (among other things as well) is that they didn’t go into it seriously. Whether it’s one party or both parties and just do it like you guys said “because it’s the next step”. I don’t think a lot of people go into with their partner having the conversation of “okay what would this marriage mean to us and what does that look like”. People are getting married to get married. Same as how people are throwing around the word “love” all willy nilly and not thinking about the meaning behind it

Alicia Barrie

Also religion said they needed too, plus no one was allowed to have sex before marriage 😂😂

jstargirl

Men always frame their fears on marriage around money. Are the women in the UK broke? Because in the US many women make the same or more than their male counterparts because they have more education.

I understand James’ reservations, they are valid. I share some of his reservations. I do think he’ll get married though, it would just not be under typical circumstances and it couldn’t be with just anyone. It would literally have to be “his person” - EYE believe.

Marriage is what you make it in my opinion. I agree with the point that so many people just see it as a next step, and I believe that’s why divorce rates are so high. Marriage isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. My wife and I got married at the court house before getting on a plane and going to Ireland. Only our best friends know. For us, we are all we have? We are our own family. So now legally I can be in the hospital with her, and we both can be considered legal parents when we start having kids. So for us it’s definitely because of the US government, as well as the commitment to building a new family name.

Marriage is a religious concept. Back in the day relations between men and women outside of wedlock was very uncommon and taboo, so the only way to resolve that was to get married. Governments had almost no involvement in marriages. People didn’t get married as a declaration of the lifelong commitment they wanted to share, it was the only thing they could do to have any relationship at all. Nowadays if you’re not religious it doesn’t really make sense to get married because too much financial risks come with it.

To be fair about the Panda Express comments. Chinese food in a European country compared to America is very different. I was shocked at the difference. I like Panda for a quick meal and their cheese rangoons are soooo good

Auntie Mo

America has Nandos too

In marriage you become a family. Officially and legally. With or without children. De facto co habitation relationships of two years or more still end up in courts. You should make an ‘arrangement’ or you could end up in court fighting over assets and not have been married. Figure it out first!

Please don't let fear stop you from marriage and love. It makes me so sad, to hear people don't believe in marriage based on what they have seen. Nothing is perfect (friendships, family, work, etc.), but if you shut yourself off from things that make you uncomfortable, finding your soulmate, or whatever, can you really say your living your best life? I'll be celebrating my 20th anniversary in a few months and I'm am so excited. Anyway if you all want to start a Fine Auntie Circle to talk through things (especially James), I volunteer as tribute.

As an Australian. these guys would lose their mind if they saw a cafe 63 menu

As a woman I feel the same about marriage is James does. But for women that think they need a wedding not being one of them you can have a wedding without legally being married just throwing that out there that is an option pronounce your Love in front of all your friends and family make it appear you're married without actually signing said document.

It's not about the institution of marriage itself but the person. 'On the worst day, this person is my person'. And deep down, you know. So the odds are in your favour. We are not married tho. We decided buying a place was more important. 21 yrs and we still talk about getting married one day.

Danni

I find marriage a tricky concept. When I was young I felt it was the done thing, every adult in my life had been married since their 20s and were happy. I settled when I was 19 as I thought no one else would want a single teen mum so I allowed myself to fall for the first lovebomber I found. Fast forward to now at nearly 35 and I'm a single mum of four left to financially support everything because my ex is unemployed by choice and does anything he can to spite me because I got him a criminal record for the abuse against me. Now I can't afford the divorce b cause he won't pay and I pay for everything 🤦🏼‍♀️. I'm with an amazing man now and go back and forth between wanting marriage with him because the legal permanence scares me so much after having to be legally tied to someone who did despicable things to me just because I can't afford to pay to get out of it yet. L3G3 sorry for the deep take Daddies (no pause, fine with a deep take)

I never understood why people say marriage is 50/50 and ONLY focus on the divorced half and not the half that are happily married. Also, even if you’ve never seen a good representation of Marriage, why not BE the good representation you want to see for marriage instead of just being done with it altogether?? Also, divorce rates are so high cause we as people pick wrong. Arranged marriage rates are way better. It’s not a marriage sucks thing it’s a people suck at choosing thing.

What brand is the skully fuhad has on?

Anytime I've asked people to name me 3 non-emotional advantages to marriage, the only thing people say is taxes here in America. I've yet to find an actual win outside of the satisfaction of being and social perception. With a divorce rate of 52%, it just doesn't seem worth it imo. You can have a life partner without a legal marriage

Georgia Burrell

As a family lawyer I would loooooove to answer some FAQs about marriage and divorce to clarify :')

Married 15 years. Wouldn’t recommend. I think it ruins a great friendship with benefits 😜. And my husband is a lovely man and I wouldn’t choose anyone else, but the small things that come with marriage (shared space, diverse life journeys, family dynamics) just become so amplified that all you see are the small annoyances. Thank God I discovered SNG because this pod has allowed me to let go of a lot of stuff - I just press play and we keep it stepping. Next life? I’d get a life partner, never a husband.

Krystle (Krys)

Girl here 🙋🏽‍♀️and I’ve never wanted to get married 😆 and if I do I’m definitely signing a prenup

Sophia SugaMama

I married my high school sweetheart, been together 31 years, married 15. He’s my best friend, my gaming buddy, my baby daddy and back breaker 😉. We have so much fun together still. He’s my bass line. I couldn’t be without him. I’m starting to realise what we have is mad rare.

Ashley

I love being married lol I think anti marriage culture is weird.

Marriage is a trap 😂😂 imo

1. When I was younger and my Gma started taking me to play tennis. Every single time I served, it went over the back line OR the BARRIER wall. As in, the wall that twas twice the size of the fence for the court...🤣🤣 one guy walking out said, "shes got a strong arm, maybe try baseball or softball 😫🤣 i havent played in years but I wanna start up again. 2. Nahh, Ray you said "vote to leave" mate...🧐 3. I think Peaches and cream is the best example of a song where its clean but dirty lol I was SINGIN that as a child🤣🤣 4. I've found that the "couldn't care less" attitude around marriage is mostly women these days. I'm one of them. The way that we've raised our girls is not to be the damsel in distress, we've adapted to move forward with where women exist in modern society. What men are taught hasn't changed to include that change. They're taught to be the bread winner and expect the hero-worship, to expect subservience. But that's not society anymore. It's why so many women hold the (absolutely not a real thing, from the mouth of the scientist who "discovered it") alpha-male in red flag territory. It's an outdated thought process that is still drilled into the next generation. Women have adapted better because we've had to. Men haven't because they didn't want to.

Ras Capo

Marriage has such a negative connotation when spoken about in today’s society. We forget the couples where their love is so deep there’s a desire to be more than just bf/gf but literally family through a ceremony with their loved ones. I’m saying this as someone who married their HS sweetheart together for 11 years married for a lil under a year and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alyssa Graziano

Rem being absent for the marriage chat 😂

Anthony Martinez

Marriage was a 0/10 experience, would not recommend. Thank God for the prenup—it's the only thing that kept me sane. If you’re the high earner, you’re basically just subsidizing your own downfall. Just remember: the person you walk down the aisle with is NOT the same person who shows up to the deposition. The level of shapeshifting is legendary

Sarah Moon

20 years ago (3/25/06) I started dating the man that would become my husband. I had NO INTEREST in getting married ever and was not one of those girls that grew up dreaming of a wedding. We were raising 5 kids together by the time I agreed to get married 3 years later (3/22/09). It was an important step to him, and I agreed bc of that. My loyalty does not depend on having a legal piece of paper and jewelry, but his happiness is my priority. We just hit 20 years together, 17 married. James, the right one will either be ok with not getting married, or you will love them so much that marrying them isn't even a question, it's the answer.

Leah Smith

With marriage, I love the sound of being referred to as "my wife" 😂 outside of that though, I think a lot of the marriages that fail come from existing issues in the relationship that were never actualised or discussed and bc people get married, not only do those issues get worse, but its harder to separate from that person. My other thing for wanting to get married other than loving my human is just being able to be legally responsible for each other - should anything happen to either of us, without being married, it would fall on the next of kin which isnt ideal if its your parents for a variety of reasons ✨️

Stephanie Powell

This episode is painful and James is a perfect example of what happens to children of divorce. Some SOME people absolutely need to divorce, but my God, the trauma and consequences for the children and how it impacts the rest of their life, is just tragic. Imagine the millions of kids walking around with James' mindset because their parents divorced.

Stephanie Powell

What James said about staying in a marriage because you cannot afford to leave, is literally the same as people committing suicide because they think life will absolutely not get better. The idea of ONLY staying in a marriage if you're happy is EXACTLY why so many fail. Marriage is love, sacrifice, hope, endurance, long suffering, pain and joy. If you want to leave when its hard, you should never have gotten married. The vows are there for a reason. For BETTER or WORSE. Richer or poorer, sickness and health. What you're saying is you are ONLY staying for the good parts. Better, Richer, Health, you'll be there but for worse, poorer or sickness, you wont 🫠. Yeah....don't ever get married, if you are not mature enough to actually understand and agree to the vows.
