Better Call Saul 6x9 | Watch Along

The Gus wine scene is one of the scenes that, IMO, separates BCS form most other shows, well ever. It gives us SO MUCH while saying so little. Most other shows wouldn’t have the courage or ability to have such a scene without dialogue explaining the meaning, but BCS just lets it happen and lets us come to the character conclusions. To me, its always been about showing us that Gus is actively choosing his revenge. He could simply be a very successful restaurant owner who enjoys wine and has interpersonal relationships, but he chooses to never let go of what happened to Max, he chooses revenge instead of moving on. Jimmy tells Kim (as Mike told him) that one day the grief and trauma of Howard’s death will leave them, but Gus holds onto his trauma and intentionally never lets it go. When he feels it slipping away, he resets and reminds himself of his mission.

While I’m at it, the scene with Mike and Nacho’s dad is so strong as well. Obviously, ya’ll noticed the “two sides of the same fence” set up. But Nacho’s dad telling Mike that “you’re all the same” is such a huge fuck you to Mike and his sense that he is somehow not a bad guy. As the audience we see Mike as a “good guy” or a criminal with a moral code, etc. But here the show is telling us that no, Mike is a criminal just like all the rest. Once you cross over to that side of the fence, everyone is the same.

Jimmy is now the BB version (if you will) of Saul Goodman. We’ve already seen what happens during BB. What could be next? Watch the cold open of S6E1 again.

one of the most important scenes in the show imo!!! & so understated!!! this episode has the best writing to me in the whole BB universe

Joel Davis

I agree 100,000% that the scene is meant to show Gus had a chance to move on from Max was actively choosing revenge. I don't know how normal his life would have been though considering he's still in bed with the cartel.

Excellent reaction as always! We're in the home stretch and the gas never lets off. Fun fact, all of the pictures used of Howard at HHM for the wake/get together were from Patrick Fabian's (Howard's actor) Instagram and were things he had done in real life.

It's fun that they have no idea what these last 4 episodes could be. I'm sure they'll remember what's left as soon as episode 10 starts though.

I've worked restaurants a while. Even when it's busy, people absolutely have long conversations, and a somm will not always make a sale. Gustavo is a regular, as well. This happens ALL the time.

Rhea was robbed at the Emmies. What do you mean, Julia Garner, I have never even met a single person who has seen Ozark. (I know as soon as I say this, the most ardent Ozark superfans will come and fight me, that's just the way the internet works)

The episode title reminds me of an old saying my dad would say when me and my brother were rough housing, I'm sure it used to be more popular, "It's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt."

The Gus scene is one of my favs in the whole franchise. To celebrate beating Lalo he allows himself to have one little fantasy - drinking wine in a fancy bar, listening to a handsome charming man describe wine to you, sniffing the cork and imagining what life would be like retired on a vineyard with this man. And then as soon as he leaves Gus snaps back to reality - as long as he's embroiled in a decades-long revenge plot he can never get close with anyone, because that's a weakness others will exploit, just like they did with Max. When we were watching this live everyone was like "wtf" just like y'all because there's 4 episodes left and they wrapped up almost every loose end. Someone else described it as "you spend most of BCS wondering when Jimmy McGill is gonna 'become Saul Goodman' and then it finally happens in a snap and you're like.... oh no, not like this".

Kara

100% agree. It's really important to the world of BB that people choose to 'break bad', even when they have other options. Walt, Jesse, Jimmy, Kim, Mike, Gus.... almost every character in the show has a viable 'out' and instead chooses to double down due to their own reasons. Walt could have taken Elliot and Gretchen's money. Jesse could have stayed out. Jimmy could have stuck with elder law. Kim could have kept driving. Mike could be a legal PI. I think it's really important to the show that the characters usually choose to stay in. Kim is one of the few characters to actually say out loud "yeah, I chose this, and it was a huge mistake" lol.

Kara

tbh none of us really knew exactly how it would play out, it's exciting to relive it lol

I always thought this was a high end wine bar but I guess Arianna is right, there's not enough 'bar' for it to not be a restaurant. Regardless I got the sense it was a place where regulars could pop in, drink wine and yap with the sommes.

Awards are basically cooked popularity contests that shows/networks/streamers have to actively campaign for. BCS was robbed but Netflix basically lobbied hard (spent thousands presumably) for Ozark and their other shows because then they can put their 'original series' won X statues in their annual report.

Joe Blankenship

Yeah, I've really been enjoying this last season. I've seen it the least so I've been on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I’m late but maple Gus did act on the things he wanted to do. He kill don eladio and all his men and had bosa killed by giving him up to the federales
