Game of Thrones 8x1 | Watch Along

Jeff I.

I actually remember watching this episode for the first time, and when the perfectly fine "At least you won't freeze your balls off." joke was followed up by that dumb "Because I have balls, and you don't." answer in response to Varys' question followed by an awkward pause that dragged the scene out a couple seconds too long, I immediately knew this season was going to be well below the overall quality of previous seasons (assuming we ignore the entire sand snake subplot in Season 5 like everyone else does).

Sam obviously didn't have a good relationship with his father, but he was still close with his brother. And keep in mind he's the older son too - that's his little brother, even if he did grow up to be bigger and stronger. As for the Bran bit, all I can say is strap in lmao

Ryley

Writers had to go from just copying what George RR Martin wrote, to trying to do it themselves, and in doing it themselves they tried to channel Joss Whedon like every other hack screen writer in the 2010s.

Bryan Erickson

Everyone is so damn clever when it comes to critiquing season 8.

This was an amazing reaction, next week ends my watch. In my head b/w s7 & s8 there are only 10 episodes that exist. Every episode that plays on from that point is just a fever dream experienced by one of the main characters before the end. so it's 10 episodes per season from s1-6 and then an extra 10 episodes where the world ends and all the different plots are wrapped up in finality. "what is dead may never die" I guess lol

Oscar H

Any rudimentary storyboard/historical fiction writer could easily do a better job. If non fantasy folks can predict what will happen in an episode between the span of the recap and theme intro then I think you have lost the plot on the writing

Athasin

It's the final countdown!!

Vasili Brasinikas

I wish Kit Harington had the acting chemistry with Emilia Clarke that he has with Sophie Turner. Their scenes are always electric imo!

Rey

Every time i see season 8 come up in someones rewatch all i can say is now my watch has ended.

MGCR

Bran and Sansa are still my favourite Starks, so you two can laugh at him all you want, my opinion will never change.

PlasteredPear

Dunno if anyone has said before but Prince Rhaegar also had a son named Aegon from his first marriage to Princess Elia Martell.

Tim F

My god, we're already at season 8. Despite my feelings on how this season ends, rewatching this series with two fresh perspectives has really reminded me how much I loved watching the first time through. I've had genuine excitement for every Thursday to watch another two episodes.

Chris Bruneau

If it seems the girls aren't taking the show seriously, its only because its not serious screenwriting.

Hennnyy

Bran’s mug had been killing me since he became the three eyed raven ☠️

Justin Calhoun

44:11 reaction to Bran was amazing 😂 I don't remember laughing originally but I've fully bought into the inside joke. I love it.

DTGstl314

There was some significance to Bran and Jamie looking at each other at the end of the episode - it's the first time Bran is seeing the man who put him in a wheelchair at the beginning of the series, many years earlier.

This season is hilarious and you all should keep laughing at it tbh. I like to view it as a tragic dramedy. That way I can cope with the silly writing and character choices.

Pabb

I'm sorry but throughout 4 seasons that followed books more closely there were situations and scenes that writers came up on their own and were brilliant. Overall character were very different to Martin's vision and you people still ate it up.

Jacob Livingston

Are they going to be watching house of the dragon?

OldManGrim

yeah lol I hope they get over the incest aspect because.......xD

OldManGrim

Okay so the first guy that gets the arrow to the eye on the boat (when Theon and co. show up) is none other than Rob McElhenney from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. D&D (showrunners for GOT) are fans of IASIP, and had directed a few episodes of Sunny; specifically "Flowers for Charlie" is a standout. Rob was offered a spot on the show, and he gets an arrow to the face for his troubles! XD

OldManGrim

Bran did say to Sam, "I'm waiting for an old friend" and stayed out there all night for Jaime lol

OldManGrim

The distinction is Dany did not give Sam's father and brother the option to take the black, be prisoners until the war ends then go north, like Sam did. That's something Jon would have definitely done, and would not have put them to dragonfire. Also the "Bran serving cunt" was a live during the broadcast thing lol; everyone laughs lol

Joe Blankenship

Every shot of Bran is hilarious. He's so creepy and odd now. Just sitting around all the time, occasionally having white eyeballs.

DTGstl314

It's probably not strictly a Targaryen thing, but it's definitely a lot more prevalent with them than any other house we've seen on the show.

Woz Lee

I'm still on season 6, are they watching the behind the scenes stuff yet? Because if not it might be time, I would LOVE to see their reactions to D&D talking about their... creative, decisions. lol

Christophe

I mean, yeah, it's generally easy to critique bad writing. That doesn't mean it's easy to be a good writer or that any of the critics would have necessarily done better. And obviously, there are still a lot of dumb critics around, no matter how good/bad a show is. And GoT was always going to be a difficult beast to finish, no one's denying that, but it's still easy to see that the writers failed.

Christophe

I've mostly been annoyed by the Avengers-like overuse lately of the leitmotifs whenever certain characters enter the scene (like we get it, they're Dothraki, you don't need to play that bass flute, drum-forward steppe music every time), but bringing back the "King's entrance" music from the pilot for the the opening scene here was great. I love a good musical throwback. Unfortunate that it was immediately followed up by the balls joke.

Pyt

I guess I'll start by saying that I really love season 1-3 of GoT and it's become kind of a meme in my friend group that the series never got picked back up after the end of season 3. We did do a rewatch together in 2018 of seasons 1-7 while we were waiting for season 8, because for some reason there was a year and a half gap between a short season and the start of a shorter season. So, this is the first time I've watched season 8 since 2019, and unfortunately there wasn't any sort of gap between the end of season 7 and this episode. Holy shit, every piece of dialog felt like it was just the first draft, and no one wanted to give it a once over. There were some many parts of this episode where I said to myself "Man that was rough to hear" like it was just embarrassing.

Christophe

I mean, sorta. Because Maple rarely takes anything seriously which I think can be annoying and distracting if what they're watching is actually good and serious and dramatic. It feels like she can very rarely actually be dialed into scenes and just sit there and take them in but instead gets distracted by random thoughts and silly, irrelevant observations, and has to make a joke out of everything. It just bothers me less here because the show has become so unserious. But overall, it's not really an aberration for them.

Domo

Let’s not act like Sansa wasn’t mugging & being snarky with Daenerys. She came to help & was met with subtle hostility

Jonathan Blaze

Sansa definitely had a little nasty attitude with Khalessi, and it didn't go unnoticed.

Aj

It's not difficult to do, pal.

Rachel Lynn

Considering the end of season 7 was a dragon destroying the wall, and we know how quickly the white walkers could get to Winterfell, I felt so annoyed watching John and Dany’s romantic dragon riding scene. It just felt so ridiculous when they’re preparing for a full-on onslaught. Like, it was already a shorter season but the pacing of it just makes everything so much more ridiculous.
