As someone who grew up in a mixed family with Italians, it is very apparent that the mother relationship can be extremely detrimental to development. I've seen grown men completely crack under the pressure, and that's a big part of why I love this show. They really nailed how terribly codependent and emotionally incestuous it can become. When my step-dad was talking about moving out of state with my mom and younger brother, his dad told him, "Italians don't leave their mothers. That's not the way." The shit goes deep. It's fucked up. And that's coming from someone who grew up with Chicago folk eating lasagna and sausage and meatballs every Christmas instead of ham or turkey. That being said, I still fucking love lasagna and meatballs and sausage.

Oh I'm well aware of that, but it can go well beyond "momma's boy." It enters "I need my mom to live and be a good person" and that's what I mean, it's a moral and emotional conundrum that can really fuck some people up.

In my family when my brother and I were young kids, we made beef and parm ravioli five days before Christmas, the whole Italian side got together and made them. I remember I was probably 9 years old and we had a competition to see who could eat the most, and I lost after eating 21 of them, and then I napped for hours, haha.

I think the word Arianna was looking for after the episode is 'romanticizing'. Or overly romanticizing which also has a fun word for it: quixotic, which is overly romanticizing something to the point of delusion.
