Yesss! As a Postgrad Economist this is one of my favourite films of all time

Land Howard Johnston

Oh fun! I literally just rewatched this last weekend but sure I'll watch it again. It's such a good movie.

LionBro

You should definitely watch some classic Jackie Chan at some point. Police Story, Wheels on Meals, Project A, Armour of God, etc...

Ker'Mhod

Any Hollywood actor appears on the screen: Maple: "Is it Tom Cruise?"

Some kind of moneyless, socialist system in a perfect world would definitely be the best option, you're right. But, only a world where nobody ever has a selfish or greedy thought or we'd end up right back here where we are. So about as practical as flattening the earth...

Movie has everything. Steve Carrell, Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise

For the majority of the 20th century (certainly from the late-30's through the 80's) the American economy worked reasonably well for most everyone. There were no major crashes or bubbles, we never really had to choose between full-on socialism or going back to the gilded age. We had a working capitalist economy with greed held in check by regulation of the markets, powerful trade unions backed the the NLRB, and a tax bracket that topped out at 90%. By the 1980's institutional memories of the dire results of the Great Depression were gone and so it was pretty easy to repeal most of the regulations that had kept financial institutions in check for all of those decades. In the 30's Roosevelt tried and succeeded in bailing out the people by spending on great public works projects and by creating Social Security and laws restricting exploitation of workers. In 2008 we bailed out the rich folks and institution that caused the crisis in the first place. We don't need to get rid of capitalism or to go full-on socialist. The government doesn't need to be smaller, it must always be just big enough and brave enough to hold capitalists in check...

if you like this film, I recommend the following: Too Big to Fail (2011) and Margin Call (2011) Both cover same subject, both are excellent films. All three are favorites of mine

Was so excited for this. This very dialogue driven movie should’ve been respected for it and have less ‘conversation’ over trivial things. Whatever, sorry. Still love yall. And of course the problem was only one of you.

Chris Thompson

These kinds of dialogue-heavy movies are not reaction-friendly regardless of who’s doing them. And what do you want them to do here - stare at the screen silently and reverently for 2 hrs or wax lyrical about the state of the nation under George Dubya Bush every other minute?

Chris Bruneau

"Capitalism has proven to be the only economic system that works, but the problem with capitalism is that extreme wealth ends up in the hands of a few people." Quote by Economist Thomas Friedman what this means is that the game of Monopoly is actually a SCARY accurate study of our econ system. its winner take all, my friends.....

Deemac

Margin Call is such an underrated film. Can't count how many times I've rewatched the boardroom scene on YouTube

Ian Forbes

The game “Is that Tom Cruise?” is my new favorite! 😂🤣

One of my favorite movies. I wish both of you would consider the possibility that all of this occurs under the biggest government in the history of the world. This is not capitalism, this is central planning, all of which the majority of women have voted for because you value safety over freedom, and you get neither because you do not understand, and probably never will, that power corrupts. The solution is to decentralize power as much as possible, have as little government as possible, and allow markets to self regulate through fierce competition. These banks are a government creation, as the film showed you.

Owen

This is literally a function of allowing billionaires and corporations to buy into politics, if you want to blame someone then blame corporatists, lobbyists and citizens united. The idea that this would be solved by removing the regulating bodies is crazy, they'd just double down. It's literally a part of the movie, you can make money off poor people by charging overdraft fees because the competition will do the same thing. All you're doing by deregulation is removing any incentive for the companies to be better. The free market has shown time and again that when allowed to do whatever they want, they do the thing that makes the most money. That is not in the best interest of the consumer because they can all just do the same thing and leave the consumer with no choice. That's why regulation, anti-trust laws, anti-monopoly laws, and the ability to make laws regulating corporate action are important. Pay attention, the bankers got paid in this movie and in real life. This happened because capitalists saw an opening, took the chance, and willingly built a system whereby the poor would be devastated and they would all get off with a slap on the wrist. The real answer is to have a functioning government whose representatives aren't bought by lobbyists. They should also not be allowed to trade stocks but that's a different conversation. The fact that most of this insanity happened under bush is not a coincidence. The fact that the government didn't act on this is a grave oversight and is likely a matter of foul play. Also blaming women for their votes is pretty fucking wild. Sorry one side is pro-capitalism and also happens to be anti-women's-rights and the other side is pro-regulation and supports women's rights.

Athasin

This movie made me realize that I never knew Margot Robbie wasn't American.

Athasin

10 years since the movie came out, 17 years since the bubble burst and NOTHING. HAS. CHANGED.

Diegesis

She got her start in Austrailian Soaps
