Watch it with the audio commentary…SOOOO much better. An “accidental comedy”. Still, it’ll never make it to YouTube…way too much nudity.

Ahh, that pool scene! Also, Joe Esterhaz was paid $3.7 million for writing this. Poor Elizabeth Berkely only got paid 100k for starring in it. I also must highly recommend Roger Ebert's contemporaneous review of the movie: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/showgirls-1995 "A sleazefest like “Showgirls” promises the inside dope on Las Vegas, stripping, hooking and all that stuff. What “Showgirls” delivers, however, seems basically to be Joe Eszterhas’ masturbatory fantasies... “Showgirls” is the first big-budget “adults only” movie in a few years and, to be sure, it contains so much nudity that the sexy parts are when the girls put on their clothes. It contains no true eroticism, however, and that’s why I think it reflects a grounding in sexual fantasy: Eroticism requires a mental connection between two people, while masturbation requires only the other person’s image..."

This is one of those movies that every few years tried to get reclaimed as a "secret masterpiece", which...it is not. It's also not nearly as bad as its reputation would have you believe. I can almost even see what Verhoeven and friends were going for at times. If I want to be really generous, I might even say I appreciate how nakedly sleazy and unglamorous this world is (intentionally) depicted. But, no, at the end of the day, it deserves cult/midnight movie status, but that doesn't magically transform it into a good movie. The only one involved who comes out unscathed to me is Gina Gershon. She absolutely knew what movie she was in and dialed everything to 11.

Oh no. Won't be able to watch this. Unfortunately, I am definitely in the 'this movie is - no sarcasm - a very very good movie, great even, masterpiece maybe'. Pls look out / try searching for a review that can put into words why so many go to bat for it! It's worth it and broadens your expectations for these film/tv things.

The only other time I've ever seen this movie until now was a heavily censored version on TNT or USA or some other random cable station when I was a like 14. Watching it now is fucking insane. The only things I remembered were the first time Nomi went to that dudes wall-less house and the pool scene. Watching it now it makes sense why I didn't remember anything else, because its just a fever dream of a movie. Nothing make sense , there isn't any sort of real plot, the protagonist is just sort of bipolar, which I guess makes sense when you finally learn her backstory in the last 2minutes of the movie. I don't want to say I hate this movie though, because it was at least interesting to watch, if only trying to figure out wtf the writer and director were going for.

Wait is that real? She only got $100k for this? That's fucking crazy exploitative, all I remember about her being in this movie was hearing that she really wanted to do something that would break her out of being pigeonholed into her Saved by the Bell role. I always assumed she was at least able to grab some sort of bag from doing this. She basically does everything but go full spread eagle to camera.

I really don't understand way people feel like this is a good film in any way. I think even RLM did a video not to long ago about it and they mentioned people were coming around on this movie. Like why? This movie is such a hot mess, there isn't any redeeming quality about it, even at the parts where I'm laughing its not because the movie wants me to laugh, I'm laughing at it never with it. The acting was terrible, the plot didn't introduces character that don't get an arc but then seemingly expects us to understand why Nomi likes them all of a sudden? There are so many erotic movies that managed to get an R rating that are actually good, and when they want me to laugh its because they made a good job. Not to mention this movie isn't even that sexy, like sure there are boobs and butts, but like Arianna and Maple said sexy scenes are so jagged and awkward. Poor Things (2023) is a comedy movie first and foremost and its still 100% more sexy than this movie. Neon Demon (2016) I kind of feel like has a similar vibe but its a horror movie, and still sexier than this movie. Hell you could even make the argument that The Lighthouse (2019) was more erotic than this movie. Like if you want sexy movies there isn't any shame in that, they are out there. I can't really think of any other reason why people would keep trying to make this movie a cult classic other than it has a lot of boobs.
