Please tell me Ariana’s t-shirt is a hint toward the identity of the next show you guys will be reacting to.

From what I've heard apparently Fabian dealing H was not part of the original script. It was a change mandated by HBO. It was to make it so Tony wouldn't seem completely irredeemable. Because this was one of the first examples of a protagonist killing someone who was no obvious threat to him and was a family man who was a reformed criminal. As is this is still the first cold blooded murder on the show.

Vasili Brasinikas

It might seem quaint in 2025, but at the time, a protagonist committing a murder like this was unprecedented and controversial. Per this episode's Wikipedia page: "Series creator David Chase has stated that when HBO first read the script, they objected to Tony's murder of Febby. Executives said that Chase had done so well in building Tony up as a sympathetic character that they believed if Tony committed such a cold-blooded killing, fans would turn on him and the show would lose its protagonist. Chase said that he believed fans would turn on Tony if the character didn't commit murder because the omission would make him appear weak. Eventually, Chase won the decision and the episode has become a fan favorite."

I don't think I have another terrible ending in me

This episode crushes

Don’t worry, we - and hopefully they - will soon have the Resurrection.

Tony mentioned that Fred (Fabian) was kicked out of witness protection when he was on the phone with Chris. There wasn't a specific reason why he was kicked out mentioned but it was probably because he was still dealing drugs. He is living under a false identity so I don't think anyone knows who he actually is. Also I wouldn't put so much faith in a small town police force to solve a murder.

Athasin

I think someone mentioned in the Band of Brother's episode that it's a memorial shirt for her dog.

Carmella and Father Phil walked so Fleabag could run.

CODIS (the national criminal DNA database) didn't exist until 2000, this first season released in 1999. So yes while DNA testing existed and yes he left DNA around, they wouldn't have been able to catch him because the system meant to catch criminals via DNA wasn't even created yet.

ZitherManifesto

You are right that killing easily is a DNA problem. But remember, this is like 1999, DNA was starting and many people never think about it.

Chris Thompson

Oh well, I guess they won’t be visiting my la-bo-ra-to-ry either then, *sigh*.

J Lawrence

It wasn't Fernet, it was just wine. Small bit of dialogue context there.

Very happy the girls are enjoying Sopranos so much! And considering the first season is considered the weakest by far, I know they’re in for a very good experience the farther they go.

Ferdinand Martinez

they fixed his accent and they do it all the time they are just making it overblown cause AI is an issue right now just that's been used for 10 plus years now lol

Ferdinand Martinez

DNA tracking barely became a thing at this time and he wasn't in witness protection anymore.

I will say tho priest and religious brothers be drinking lol my Grandapa and cousin are both part of the church and they just chill and drink also watch movies lol

I still remember how huge this episode was after it first aired. Everyone knew The Sopranos was a good new TV show to check out, but no one seriously thought any show could ever compete with movies. Pretty much every good series you have and will ever see can be traced back to the Sopranos College episode.

JG

Without getting into specifics, I 💯 agree with you that the 1st season is the “weakest”. It starts to ramp up in quality after College, so that’s good we are now past this point.

Kyle K

This episode is rated by some as one of the best episodes of television ever

Catholics believe in the Holy Trinity, so I guess it's technically always a five-some for them.

Christophe

Anyone a fan of the Expanse? Because Father Phil is played by Paul Schulze who also played Esai Martin in the fourth season of the Expanse. Took me forever to figure out where I knew him from.

Aj

Personally, even though season 1 is the most different and the show hadn't found its identity yet, I still don't think it's the weakest season. For me, it's definitely season 4, or perhaps 6A if you consider that its own thing.

Seton Hall is in NJ. Like right by where Tony lives. But… their mascot is the Pirates so I can see a Pittsburgh misunderstanding.

“Islam has gotten a bad rap in current culture, but this Chianti is… word up!” - Father Phil 🤣🤣🤣🤣

36:55 - resident Catholic here. After Communion, the Blood of Christ (wine) must be fully consumed. Whether it’s a Mass for one person or for a thousand. Fr. Phil gulping down the rest of the chalice is what he has to do. And Arianna thank you (so far) for showing some respect for my faith. I know it’s a super awkward episode and intended to make everyone think that Fr. Phil was some priest who bangs wives, I’m glad he didn’t, but all of the aspects of Catholicism in this episode are properly presented. Remember this show was created by an Italian (Chase is what David’s family changed their name to) and 99% of the actors are Italian and would have all been raised Catholic.

Bill B.

My uncle, may he rest in peace, was a priest, and we had so many great nights drinking Carlo Rossi jug wine (they don’t use the expensive stuff for Communion) and talking history, theology, and philosophy. And watching everything from The Office to serious documentaries.

"He was with a blonde in ep 1 or 2" - That was Irina, now re-cast by a different actress, but it's supposed to be the same woman: Tony's 'goomar' or girlfriend/mistress. In ep 1 she had her hair dyed is all...

You'd love the tag line you see when you open up the DVD holder: Meet Tony Soprano. If one family doesn't kill him... 💔 ...the other one will. 🗡️ 😜
