The Happening (2008) | Bad Movie Watch Along

I actually enjoyed this movie

Shyamlam surely like few other directors (Zack Snyder, Taika Waititi) got over-confident after success, but also he kinda got unlucky with streak of movies in mid 2000s that didn't work because of either they were plain bad (Avatar, After earth) or had a good idea but failed in execution (Happening, The Village). Specifically with Happening, I feel he couldn't decide if he wanted the movie to have 50s B-movie vibe (stilted dialogue, odd character behavior, and an invisible enemy) or a serious satire about humanity’s disconnection from nature. Luckily he had his comeback post The Visit

So many banger quotes came from this reaction

Dani

the CIA actually had a budget for pigeons to be used as spies against the USSR

Mark Wahlberg has a few movies in his filmography that are like “wow Mark Wahlberg might really be an actor” and then you watch the majority of his career which are movies like this one and you go “oh nevermind” lol

I think people kind of forgot how big of a hit The Sixth Sense (1999) was, like I couldn't walk 10 feet without someone telling me how I absolutely needed to watch that movie. I can see how someone who was still kind of new in Hollywood receiving so much praise would get such an inflated ego. I will always say that The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), and The Village (2004) (This movie isn't great but its definitely worth it to watch once), is a great way to start your catalog as a director. Lady in the Water (2006) is really the first time I noticed that M. Night's ego really took over. If you've seen the movie you know, I don't want to spoil it because it is truly fascinating watching someone really just smell their own farts and call it roses.

Chris Thompson

I would say a decent majority of his movies pre-‘18 he was pretty solid in; got good comedic chops and can actually do drama, but sure when he blips, he sure as shit knows how to blip. Post -‘18 however, it was almost shameless how he dove so whole-heartedly into the hell that is streaming hell and there continues to reside, thirsty for that Netflix noodle. Although if Chad wishes to complete the Marky Mark Bad Movie trifecta, he should force the girls to suffer through his sole big screen offering of this decade, Flight Risk. It’s brutal, and features a Wahlberg- related twist that’s on par with anything M Night has done.

made me scratch my monitor

I would respectfully disagree. His filmography is shockingly long and there are like maybe 3 or 4 movies on it that I would willingly rewatch, and one of them is The Departed and he isn't even a lead in that.

Owen

Marky Mark's performance in this movie can be explained by the fact that he completely gave up during production because the direction was so bad

Owen

Also I am not a Wahlberg apologist but he is legitimately terrible in this because MNS is awful

Joe Blankenship

Yeah, Shyamalan really thought he could do no wrong at this point. But really, he'd been steadily in decline since Signs. The Village was pretty dumb. Split's pretty decent. Old is kind of a "so bad it's funny" one. The Happening, though, is just dumb. This is my first time getting all the way through it. Turned it off the first couple times I tried to watch it.

Joe Blankenship

Arianna needs to check out The Men Who Stare at Goats if she likes crazy CIA programs.

Zombie

Oh I hope they do Old at some point!

Zombie

Freaking hilarious!! Loved it

Jacob King

If you want a good Mark Wahlberg movie I’d recommend Three Kings or I Heart Huckabees. He’s best when he’s playing himself, he’s okay when he’s playing a generic movie hero and terrible when he has to be another person.

Athasin

I hope they eventually watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Connor Roy? No, that's Cameron.

Athasin

Their "size of the group" explanation makes no sense because there were only 4 of them in the car but 5 of them in the field when the wind went past them.

Spencer Wichmann

Knowing is a movie that came out around the same time as this and is also terrible and about an apocalypse of sorts idk why but i always linked the two together also would LOVE a reaction from yall for New Girl

David Sumner

You gotta watch Shymalan's After Earth (2013). Basically, Will Smith decided to produce a summer blockbuster starring his son, Jaden, and then hired M. Night Shyamalan to write and direct. The results are... spectacular!

Adam Vialpando

Definitely not. The Happening is a fun bad movie. After Earth is an annoying bad movie. It's a totally crap film but it's made just competently enough that it doesn't have that 'so bad it's good' charm.

Adam Vialpando

Lady in the Water is his Magnum Opus. If he didn't constantly talk about how he viewed it as some epic folklore tale I would have been convinced it was a pure comedy. This was when Shyamalan was completely full of himself. He even had a studio that told him they didn't understand at all what his film was but they would fund the whole thing anyway and he turned them down for the perceived slight.

Adam Vialpando

He talked once about the film and said he just wanted to finally have a role that wasn't some criminal or a cop in a drama or action movie.

Adam Vialpando

The behind the scenes stuff was even funnier. Just hearing him talk about Lady in the Water is hilarious.

Adam Vialpando

I love that the movie starts with "More of this is true than you would believe"

Adam Vialpando

Shyamalan is like a fisherman. He'll make a string of bad films and just when people have completely given up on him he reels them back in with things like The Visit or Split or Knock at the Cabin.

Adam Vialpando

This film is an absolutely great time, just not in the way it was intended.

T.wiley

Lol true

Joe Blankenship

His scripts seem like they were desperately in need of a 2nd pass by another writer. There's nothing wrong with having an unexpected twist, but you've got to make it sense. He tries to establish a realistic world, then abruptly abandons logic and reason just to have a kooky twist.

Owen

"I'm an inventor!"

James Moseley

You guys should watch Shyamalan’s “Lady in the Water.” Fun trivia. Lady takes place entirely in an apartment complex. The movie cost a fortune to make only because Knight insisted that they build the entire complex from scratch. No joke. He used to insist on filming all his movies in Philadelphia, but the apartment he wanted was some Los Angeles bungalow complex that doesn’t exist in the North East. So they built it for him in PA. They don’t even use the complex that much. They film everything in different apartment rooms.

Zombie

I’m hoping y’all cover M Night’s movie Old!! Need to hear what y’all have to say about it! It’s up there with The Happening
