A lot of people hate pierce in these episodes where he plays the villain (understandably) but its by FAR my favorite Pierce episodes. his line delivery on "Faaaaaaat" kills me every time. I also feel like his comically evil villainy fits so well with the D&D setting. top 5 episode for sure!

Brent Petty

Most underappreciated line for me is when Pierce yells at Neil to give him his chair. "Get out! You're stretching it!"

Andrew

My favourite is Jeff just yelling "YES" when asked if he likes to be left out.

Andrew

Little funny trivia: The line "(...) and that look you give me, like I cant get erections" was put in because Chevy Chase apparently mentioned multiple times on set that he can still get erections.

So, the creator of Community, Dan Harmon, has a podcast where he does D&D campaigns with comedians. They did a few seasons of a TV show too with animated bits. It's called "HarmonQuest." Worth a look if you're into D&D.

I personally don't like ep. 14 because I'm not used to D&D played where the DM rolls everything and I refuse to accept it. That aside Pierce in ep.14 specifically was so mean spirited during the entire episode. Like usually you can chalk him being a dick because of him not understanding, trying to be excepted and going about it the wrong way, or just an outright idiot. Man he is just such an actual dicki in this one. Ep. 13 I kind of gave him a pass because it showed his back story and how his father treated him. So it kind of gives him at least a little sympathy.

The D&D episode is frequently cited as fans' either #1 or #2 favorite episode of the series. Pierce is of course horrible, but fills the role of villain well -- and gets his comeuppance -- and there were so many other funny lines. But I can certainly understand being uncomfortable, especially watching these two particular episodes in a row.

Guy Gordon

Advanced D&D is easily in my top 5.

Ben

Generally agreed on 13 being a lesser episode other than Chang's lines but I will always love this D&D episode

I've never cared for the D&D ep, despite it being highly rated. I may be a TTRPG nerd, but their streamlining the game to make it flow better doesn't bother me at all (except that a real DM would have kicked Pierce after about 10 seconds). So zero pedantry from me. But I feel like Pierce's cruelty is so... visceral here? And the other group members' reactions to his cruelty are pretty deep and feel sincere. Yeah, great, that makes him a good villain. I guess, though I don't know. Good villains have motivation. But I just don't understand how they could keep him around after this. Like, it feels infinitely harder to do a "reset" after this one, compared with the usual madness. It doesn't feel as whimsical or surreal as normal Greendale shenanigans (which is ironic given that it's literally fantasy) I'm sure I'm overthinking it. And there is some amazing stuff. Annie's RP with the elf, Britta and the gnomes. And yes, Pierce in his lair was very good. But... I don't know. I guess it has a whiff of "we get to write fat jokes, we just have the bad character say it".

Dani

when I first watched this show these two episodes made me stop watching so I totally get what Maple is saying lol. it gets better though!

Dani

this show is so funny, it doesn't need to lean on fatphobia & weird incest humor like this

I feel like they just decided to make Pierce into a punching bag for everything that they imagine boomers to be. And for anyone out there that feels inclined to point out that Chevy Chase is a dick, I would point out that Dan Harmon is every bit as much of a dick as Chevy Chase is.

Patrick

These episodes do feel mean spirited in a way where we're a long way from making blanket forts...

I can't help but feel you missed the point of that episode, quite spectacularly.

Ah, the duality of TV. Pierce makes a great villain and he really shines here where he goes full Sauron over the pettiest little offense, and it's great fun to watch taken as just a piece of fiction, but also when we spend so much time with these characters it gets easy to think of them as real people, and then he's pretty much an execrable, irredeemable human being - I mean, what's happening here is Pierce's casual friend group excludes him for one night for a game he neither likes nor understands, and he takes his insecurities out on this teenager with the most relentless, hurtful, personal attacks he can conceive of, never mind if Neil believes he's mostly play-acting. If you do get immersed in the story for even a moment it's pretty horrible.
