I don't think AJ was in the right but I remember when I lost my step-dad, I did something similar. Just denied that it was him, shut it all off, found other things to talk about. I feel bad now but it was the only way I could come up with to avoid understanding it and accepting it. I've seen it elsewhere as well. That's a big part of why I appreciate these episodes so much, it's a really good portrayal of what some people do.
